Chapter 38: Acceptance Letter
On New Year’s Eve, Mi Xia and Zhang Hongxia prepared every dish they could think of.
That evening, the children went to play with fireworks and firecrackers—all from Mi Xia’s dimensional space, the safe kind, and the children loved them.
The large fireworks were especially beautiful, attracting onlookers from all around.
Shortly after the Spring Festival, Mi Xia received a plain registered letter at home. The envelope bore her address and was sent from “Beijing Qing University Revolutionary Committee.”
Mi Xia had been accepted! She’d been admitted to Beijing Qing University, as expected. Although she’d attended this university in her past life, she couldn’t help but feel overjoyed.
That night, her older brother and sister-in-law returned, and Mi Xia showed them the letter. Watching them carefully open the envelope, their reverent expressions filled Mi Xia with emotion.
Only after Mo Jianguo read the letter did he truly believe his younger sister had been accepted, and into the best university in the country! Mi Xia had become their pride, a role model for her nephews, who all aspired to attend the same university as her.
She was also the top scorer in science for the S Province! The county magistrate even visited her home, bringing a 100-yuan cash prize and a congratulatory banner celebrating Mi Xia’s achievement as the provincial science top scorer entering Beijing Qing University.
The small county buzzed with excitement over its provincial science top scorer. Many who hadn’t gotten into university wanted to buy Mi Xia’s notes, but Mi Xia remained low-key, only appearing publicly on the day the county magistrate visited.
The family spent their time eating, drinking, and having fun.
“Wife, you’re amazing,” Mo Haoyue said proudly.
“Of course, you should know who your wife is. It would be strange if I didn’t get in,” Mi Xia said, tilting her head smugly.
In the next room, “Wife, Little Sister really got into university, and she’s the top scorer! Mom and Dad would be so happy if they knew,” Mi Qiu said, his eyes welling up.
Zhang Hongxia was also overjoyed. Her younger sister was going to Beijing for university, and with her help, perhaps their whole family could one day live in Beijing.
“Exactly! There are hardly any university students in the ten surrounding villages, including the county town, but our Little Sister got in, and to the best university in the country!”
Mi Qiu was ecstatic, even happier than if he himself had gotten into university.
“Wife, my supervisor recommended me to study in Beijing,” Mo Haoyue calmly announced.
“Such big news, and you only tell me now? We could have celebrated earlier,” Mi Xia chided Mo Haoyue playfully.
Mo Haoyue explained, “I didn’t want to say anything until you received your acceptance letter. If you hadn’t gotten in, I wouldn’t have gone either.”
Mi Xia’s heart warmed. This man was truly…
Mi Xia took Mo Haoyue to deliver one last supply of goods to Old Mrs. Song: 100 kilograms of grain, 20 kilograms of meat, some fruit, over a dozen fish, and several cans of food.
Mi Xia cooked a meal, and everyone enjoyed it happily.
“Grandma Song, I’m going to Beijing for university,” Mi Xia said reluctantly. Over the years, she had truly come to consider Grandma Song and Song Binbin as family.
Old Mrs. Song was startled. Beijing. She hadn’t heard that city mentioned in a long time. “Is that so? Congratulations! I always knew our Xia Xia wasn’t ordinary.”
Song Binbin grinned, “Sister, congratulations!”
Mi Xia smiled happily at them.
Grandma Song then turned to Mo Haoyue and asked Mi Xia, “So you two will be separated again?”
Mo Haoyue smiled, “Grandma Song, my supervisor recommended me to study in Beijing. We won’t be separated.”
Grandma Song nodded happily. They finished their meal in high spirits.
“Grandma Song, we’re leaving now. We’ll visit again when we can,” Mi Xia said, crying as she hugged Song Binbin.
He also wept. Grandma Song’s eyes welled up. Partings are always painful, yet there are always reasons that make them inevitable.
Back home, Mi Xia prepared food for the train in her dimensional space. She poured some pure milk into unmarked bottles.
She also prepared beef jerky, beef cubes, Oreos, dumplings, steamed buns, beef sauce, and pickles.
She packed several changes of clothes and shoes for the family.
That day, Mi Xia and Mo Haoyue, along with Mo Zhixia, traveled light. Zhang Hongxia piled up a bunch of things. “Little Sister, Brother-in-law, take these with you. You can use them right away when you get there.”
Mi Xia sighed, “Sister-in-law, we’ll buy things when we get there. It’s inconvenient to travel with a child and so much luggage.”
Zhang Hongxia agreed and stopped packing. But before they left, she gave Mi Xia another package of food and some money.
Mi Xia didn’t refuse. If she hadn’t taken them, her brother and sister-in-law wouldn’t have felt at ease.
On the train, Mo Haoyue busied himself with various tasks. Fortunately, they traveled light, with little luggage. They had bought sleeping berths.
In other carriages, the aisles were blocked with luggage, and people were even lying down in the walkways.
The carriage was filled with various smells: people taking off their shoes, eating food. Thankfully, it was still cold; otherwise, the smell of sweat would have been unbearable.
After several days on the train, the family finally arrived. Train travel in this era was truly arduous—slow and uncomfortable. Fortunately, the food was good; otherwise, they wouldn’t have known how to endure those days.
Only after getting off the train did Mi Xia feel alive again. Mo Haoyue took them to a guesthouse. She was grateful for his help; otherwise, she wouldn’t have known what to do alone with a child.
With their introduction letter and marriage certificate, the family checked in smoothly. The guesthouse was simple, with only a bed and a table.
The bathroom was shared, not in the room. Mi Xia took out some food from her dimensional space and told her daughter that her father had bought it outside.
In her daughter’s mind, her father was a hero, the most amazing person in the world. She would believe anything he said, even if he claimed to have flown to the sky.
Mi Xia got three cups of milk tea, hamburgers, fries, taro pies, and fried chicken. Junk food was always tempting.
Zhang Xiaoyu had already bought a house. They received his telegram while still on the train, and the family had already moved in, but Mo Haoyue was still there.
He didn’t want to contact Zhang Xiaoyu directly, preferring to find a suitable opportunity to explain. After eating, Mi Xia took her daughter to bathe.
The bathroom was crowded, with many families with children. Many were likely students from Beijing Qing University.
Soon after returning, the little girl fell asleep, probably tired from the train journey. Mi Xia took them both into her dimensional space and showered again with Mo Haoyue.
Then, she slept with her daughter.
“Wife, I’ll rent a house tomorrow. It’s inconvenient for the whole family to be here without a place to live.”
Mi Xia had been planning to tell Mo Haoyue about Zhang Xiaoyu, since he was also studying here and she couldn’t keep it a secret forever. The opportunity came sooner than she expected.
“Um, don’t get mad, okay?” Mi Xia asked nervously.
“Tell me.”
“Well, when I received my acceptance letter, I contacted Zhang Xiaoyu and asked him to come to Beijing to help me. He agreed.”
“I asked him to look for a house first, and buy one if he found a suitable one. He contacted me while we were in the county and said he’d bought a house.”
“We have a house now. We don’t need to rent,” Mi Xia said, increasingly nervous.
Mo Haoyue was silent for a moment. “My wife is truly capable.”
Mi Xia had expected Mo Haoyue to get angry, but she hadn’t expected this reaction.
