Chapter 80: Splitting the Take
After hearing Ashura’s proposal, everyone shouted their displeasure.
They felt Ashura was being a profiteer and that his price was outrageously greedy.
Even the four girls behind him looked embarrassed, wishing they could distance themselves from the guy.
Ashura, however, faced the crowd unfazed; he was always patient with customers, said nothing in his own defense, sliced off a strip of roast, and began eating with grease running down his chin.
As Ashura savored the meat the aroma grew stronger and the shouting subsided; everyone swallowed hard, then a chubby hand thrust out a student badge and cried, “Ashura, hurry, give me 1 jin of roast to try!”
Ashura’s eyes lit up, he tapped badges with the fat boy Na Wei to take 10 credits, and enthusiastically cut a piece from the bull’s thigh for him.
Na Wei ignored the heat, stuffed the meat into his mouth, and finished the entire jin in three bites; after swallowing he shut his eyes as though reliving the flavor.
The surrounding students silently watched the eyes-closed Na Wei, waiting for his evaluation.
After a long silence Na Wei snapped his eyes open, said nothing about the taste, and simply pulled out his badge again to order 3 more jin!
Seeing his reaction, the others swallowed hard; once there was a first buyer, a second and third quickly followed, and soon the students were scrambling to pull out their badges for roast.
Ashura busily collected credits while carving meat, and the four girls exchanged looks, reached a silent agreement, and stepped forward to help him sell the roast.
The roast became wildly popular, and many students came back for seconds like Na Wei.
Even Instructor Enge paid 100 credits for the greenwood savage bull’s head to pair with his wine!
Kyle and his friends could not bring themselves to buy directly from Ashura, yet they could not resist the aroma.
They asked a friendly Warrior student to buy several jin for them; intending to find fault, they took a bite and were instantly conquered by the flavor, fighting over every piece until it was gone.
In no time most of the greenwood savage bull was gone, and many students proactively paid credits to reserve tomorrow’s roast, including Kyle and the other Magic students under anonymous names.
Grinning from ear to ear, Ashura counted the credits on his badge; tonight’s sales netted 1 800 credits, and tomorrow’s reservations totaled 2 000.
Ashura suddenly felt life was wonderful; with more than 20 days of training ahead he was sure to make a fortune, and a Yellow Tier Martial Technique was no longer a dream!
While he fantasized about the Academy Points he would earn during this expedition, four slender figures surrounded him; puzzled by their meaningful looks, he scratched his head.
When he noticed their eyes fixed on his badge, he thought he understood and waved grandly, declaring, “Relax, I won’t charge you four for the roast you ate, fair enough?”
The four girls instantly felt dark lines appear on their foreheads, having underestimated Ashura’s shamelessness.
Yet all four hesitated, looking at one another without speaking.
At last Magina lost patience first and said to Ashura, “Have you forgotten something?”
Ashura had no idea what she meant; after thinking hard he still found nothing he had missed, tilting his head and staring at the beauties with innocent eyes.
Magina’s pretty face flushed, yet she insisted, “You haven’t shared the credits from the roast; we cooked it together and sold it together!”
Her cheeks turned even redder after speaking, as though embarrassed, and the other three nodded in agreement.
Ashura was dumbfounded; he thought he was thick-skinned, yet these four beauties were even thicker.
He jumped up at once and retorted, “No way, absolutely not! Keep dreaming!”
The four had felt a bit embarrassed, yet the sheer number of Academy Points was too tempting; they actually admired Ashura for earning so much so quickly, and they were glad they had come to help with the roast.
But Ashura’s refusal annoyed them, and Instructor Ella said calmly, “Fine, don’t split, but from now on anyone who asks me for leave will be handled strictly according to Academy rules.”
Ashura’s eyes widened in disbelief at the beautiful, intellectual instructor, unable to believe she had spoken so harshly.
He bit his lip as though conceding something to Instructor Ella, then shifted his gaze to the other three.
The three were even more direct; without a word they drew a Horse-Cutter Sword, a dagger, and a magic staff.
Ashura immediately raised his hands in surrender and shouted, “Fine, fine, you win; I’ll give each of you 100 Academy Points, fair enough?”
The three girls’ eyes lit up and they were about to agree when Instructor Ella interjected from the back, “Didn’t you earn 1 800 credits today? We’re a team, so the take should be split evenly… 360 credits each, no more, no less!”
Ashura froze again, staring at the four beauties whose eyes now glowed green.
Silently he drew Twin Swords Radiance from his space belt, assumed a fighting stance, and was ready to unlock his third seal at any moment.
Seeing his resolute posture, Instructor Ella smiled and raised her magic staff, unleashing the full aura of a second-stage Magic Scholar, her flaxen hair billowing in the wind; the other three also lifted their weapons and watched Ashura with bright smiles.
Ashura stared at the four for a long moment, then silently took out his badge and handed it over…
A little later Ashura lay expressionless in his tree hollow, gazing at the sky outside while the excited chatter of the four girls drifted in; he felt a Yellow Tier Martial Technique slipping away from him.
He did not know how much time passed before he calmed down and sat in the hollow to meditate.
Except for the outermost Warrior sentries, the students in the camp gradually fell asleep, and the night in Beast Forest was tranquil and long.
Around midnight, while meditating, Ashura heard light footsteps approaching his hollow, and he instantly lay down on the dry reeds and feigned sleep.
Soon a small head poked into the hollow; seeing Ashura apparently asleep, the visitor hesitated, then crept inside, sat down with knees hugged, and looked up at the midnight sky.
Just then a resentful voice sounded in the hollow: “Why aren’t you sleeping? What are you doing in my place?”
The girl at the entrance nearly shrieked, then turned and glared at Ashura’s mischievous grin.
The bright moonlight fell on the girl’s exquisite face, making her beauty even more breathtaking…
