Chapter 10: Darkbite Knight Order
“From its inception, the Darkbite Knight Order had been stationed at the borders of the Hedley Empire to combat small-scale incursions by the demon race, and that was the very purpose of its existence.”
“For the sake of stability within the empire, the imperial court refused to disclose this information, so the Darkbite Knight Order had to operate under assumed names and silently fight the invading demon race.”
“Until recently, the demon race finally signed a peace treaty with the Hedley Empire and ceased their invasions, and the Darkbite Knight Order, having lost its purpose, was disbanded.”
Upon hearing this, Amia’s little head went blank for a moment.
So the peace she saw now was merely an illusion?
In a place unseen by them, a group of knights had assumed false identities and waged a decade-long struggle against the demon race for their sake.
Seeing Amia’s expression, Ryan suddenly wondered if it was inappropriate to tell a child such things.
“You’ve told me things that can’t be found in any book; it’s been tremendously enlightening. Thank you.”
Amia turned her head, first offering Ryan a word of thanks, then adding:
“If I’m not mistaken, you were actually a member of the Darkbite Knight Order, weren’t you?”
Ryan nodded without hesitation since it wasn’t something he needed to hide in the first place.
If he could, Ryan would have told everyone in the empire about the existence and achievements of the Darkbite Knight Order.
“So now that the Darkbite Knight Order has been disbanded, what kind of work are you doing? Are you staff at Alcot?”
“No.”
Ryan shook his head and said, “Right now, I’m just an ordinary butler.”
“Are you here to accompany your young lady to school?”
“Yes.”
“I imagine you know many things that aren’t recorded in books. If possible, could you tell me more?”
Amia looked at Ryan as if she had discovered a treasure, her tone calm yet her eyes flickering with light.
“Of course.”
Ryan smiled lightly in agreement… he had grown quite fond of this white-haired little girl whose feelings were conveyed entirely through her eyes.
“Well then…”
Amia lifted her book, about to ask something, when chimes echoed through Alcot Academy.
Ryan suddenly stood and apologized to Amia: “My young lady’s class is about to end; I need to pick her up. I’ll tell you more next time. I’m sorry.”
A clear flash of disappointment passed through Amia’s eyes, but she still replied:
“All right, I look forward to our next meeting, Mr. Butler.”
After returning the box of newspapers to its place, Ryan turned and left the main library, heading toward the classroom building.
♤ ♡ ♢ ♧
All morning, Nanali sat at her desk in a drowsy state.
The instructor stood at the podium, but Nanali didn’t absorb a single word.
After all, she had stayed up all night, so it was only natural that Nanali felt sleepy now.
Nanali’s magic teacher, Rowan Winsor, was a woman who looked very young, with long white hair and an extraordinarily… voluptuous figure.
To Nanali, that meant a large bust, a slim waist, a shapely rear, and overall very attractive.
When Nanali heard from Ryan that Teacher Winsor’s teaching methods were completely unsuited to her, she lost all desire to listen.
She forced herself to stay awake now because Teacher Winsor had always been kind to her, and she didn’t want to disappoint her.
But the drowsiness was overwhelming; her eyelids grew heavier and her vision gradually blurred.
“Axi? Axi!”
In her groggy state, Nanali heard Teacher Winsor calling her; she mustered what energy she could and looked up at her.
“You didn’t rest last night, did you?”
Teacher Winsor sighed.
Winsor was surprised that Nanali wasn’t paying attention in class.
Winsor could see that Nanali had always yearned for magic; even though her talent was lacking, she had always been more diligent in her lessons than anyone else.
Unfortunately, talent was talent, and in magic there was no such thing as overcoming innate shortcomings through effort alone.
Hearing the teacher call Nanali, many students looked over, and seeing her drowsy state, they couldn’t help but snicker.
Teacher Winsor asked Nanali, “Tell me, an element produced through magic channeling can undergo a maximum of how many transformations?”
Still sleepy, Nanali subconsciously recalled the magic knowledge Ryan had taught her and replied without thinking:
“If the mana is abundant enough, it can be reshaped as many times as needed.”
“Hahaha…”
As soon as her words fell, the classroom erupted in laughter.
With Nanali’s confused look, Winsor shook her head and sighed:
“It’s twice: first to shape the element through magic channeling, and second for the change produced by casting the spell. That’s what I just explained. Pay attention, Axi.”
Meanwhile, the students’ low murmurs in the classroom never ceased.
“As many transformations as you like, haha…”
“You wouldn’t really think casting magic is like molding clay, would you?”
“Don’t be ridiculous… you all know she can’t cast magic at all!”
Nanali had long grown accustomed to her classmates’ mockery and didn’t care in the least.
But at Winsor’s explanation, Nanali felt indignant and couldn’t help retorting:
“I’m not wrong… if the mana is sufficient, it can be reshaped any number of times!”
Seeing Nanali actually talk back, Winsor’s expression soured:
“Since you’re so insistent, how about proving it… show the class with a demonstration?”
Immediately after saying this, Winsor regretted it.
After all, Nanali lacked magical talent, but her love for magic rivaled anyone’s, so Winsor knew her words would deeply hurt Nanali.
But Nanali showed none of the expression Winsor expected; instead, she raised her right hand and began to channel her mana!
Then, to Winsor’s astonishment, a roaring ball of flame appeared in Nanali’s palm.
The whispers in the classroom vanished in an instant as everyone stared in shock at the flame in Nanali’s hand.
Depending on talent and mastery of magic, each person’s summoned form naturally differed.
Even the most gifted among them couldn’t possibly summon a flame like the one Nanali produced!
And in the ensuing silence, the flame in Nanali’s hand began to change further according to her will.
