Chapter 20: The Phoenix Man × Rich Beauty (Conclusion)
After this incident, the relationship between Gu Yin and Bai Yue became even stronger. Recently, the two of them had begun discussing marriage, which made the Gu family very happy.
After chatting with the neighbors and under Gu Yin’s subtle ideological influence, Mother Gu no longer clung so tightly to her traditional preference for sons. Now, all she hoped for was that Gu Yin and Bai Yue would give her a grandchild to raise—be it a grandson or granddaughter, she’d love either.
After all, her own son had clearly stated that he didn’t want children and even talked about being childfree. This made Mother Gu start to doubt Gu Yin’s capabilities as a man.
Because of this, she not only felt sorry for Bai Yue but also regularly went to temples to pray, hoping the heavens would bless her “useless” son.
Gu Yin hadn’t expected that the key to changing his mother’s mindset would be her thinking he was… incapable!
Fortunately, Mother Gu was considerate of her son’s dignity and didn’t say anything out loud. Otherwise, Gu Yin would have completely blown up.
That said, Gu Yin was indeed extremely capable. His talent in administrative work was especially outstanding. Not only did he secure the position of Chief of the Medical Services Department, but he also earned the trust of his superiors and had a bright future ahead.
Bai Yue, on the other hand, was a natural-born healer. After being promoted to Associate Chief Physician, she worked wholeheartedly for her patients and received glowing praise from many.
“Where are you taking me?” Bai Yue asked as Gu Yin led her forward. She wore a blindfold, which he had insisted she keep on after mysteriously dragging her out right after work.
“You’ll know in just a second. Careful with the step,” Gu Yin said, guiding her gently.
He led Bai Yue to the window and took off her blindfold from behind. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights of A City sparkled brightly, illuminating the night and the buildings below.
“What is this?” Bai Yue asked in surprise, looking at Gu Yin.
“This is our home,” Gu Yin said, hugging her from behind. “You once said you wanted a home. While a home isn’t just a house, I still wanted to give you a nest that belongs only to us.”
“You sure know how to sweet-talk. Have you been hiding a private fund behind my back?” Bai Yue’s eyes twinkled with happiness as she playfully poked his chest.
“I invested in some stocks before and made a bit of money.” The original Gu Yin had a natural talent for stock trading, and after Gu Yin took over, he invested all previous earnings into the stock market. With the advantage of his knowledge, he earned a good amount.
“I just made the final payment today. Tomorrow morning, we’ll register our marriage, and in the afternoon, we can start the paperwork for the house!”
“In your dreams. Did I ever say I’d register with you?” Bai Yue’s words were firm, though her expression was anything but.
“Then how about this.” Gu Yin snapped his fingers. The room lights came on instantly. Gu Lingyun immediately made her exit, hiding her achievements.
Bai Yue turned around to find the floor of the tastefully decorated apartment covered with petals and balloons. Gu Yin stood in the middle of a heart shape made of rose petals, knelt down on one knee, and said, “Yueyue, will you marry me?”
With tears in her eyes, Bai Yue nodded. Gu Yin quickly got up and slipped the ring onto her finger, then picked her up and spun her around like a big goofball. This impression was shared by the secretly watching Yaya.
The Gu family was hiding nearby, stifling their laughter so as not to interrupt the sweet moment. Tiptoeing, they quietly snuck away.
“How long did you secretly prepare all this?” Bai Yue asked, leaning against Gu Yin’s chest.
“Not long. You know how efficient I am.” Gu Yin stubbornly refused to admit how many posts he had read and how many times he had searched for ideas online just to prepare this proposal.
“Not long? I saw Auntie and Yaya, you liar!”
“Yaya just came to watch. You know how kids are.”
“You big liar!” Bai Yue playfully bit him, annoyed and amused.
Gu Yin chuckled and hugged her. “Although the apartment is already fully decorated, we can still modify some of the furniture. I remember you said you liked a country-style theme. After we finish the paperwork tomorrow, let’s get a designer to take a look. Sound good?”
…
Their wedding preparations went extremely smoothly. The Gu family loved Bai Yue and gave her the best they could offer. Though Mother Gu didn’t have much money, she still provided a dowry and gold jewelry.
Bai Yue was deeply touched. After the wedding, the couple planned to move into their new home. Bai Yue wanted to let Mother Gu and her family live in their current house, but Mother Gu declined.
“We’re already living above the restaurant. It’s close and convenient. I’ve gotten to know all the ladies in the neighborhood—I wouldn’t want to move!”
Gu Yin pooled his earnings with what was left of his mother’s savings and bought the restaurant property. Now that they owned it, they could do whatever they wanted more freely.
Mother Gu lived happily there, and Bai Yue didn’t insist. She simply gave Mother Gu a key to the new house so she could visit or stay anytime.
Now Mother Gu bragged about her daughter-in-law’s thoughtfulness to everyone she met.
At the wedding, Bai Yue’s father showed up in full formal attire. Now that Gu Yin had a promising future and perfectly matched his ideal son-in-law image, he felt proud and became much warmer toward Gu Yin’s family.
The same couldn’t be said for Wen Jing. She stood off to the side, sullen and tight-lipped, clearly unhappy that Bai Yue was living such a blissful life.
It was said that after Father Yuan was investigated, Mother Yuan quickly divorced him. Her family fought to protect as much of her assets as possible, but they wanted no involvement in Father Yuan’s troubles, fearing it would drag them down.
Mother Yuan understood the stakes. She took the money, bought a new house, and lived there with her son.
Without his powerful connections, Yuan Zhi soon left the People’s Hospital. Unemployed, he now spent his days lounging at home, playing video games, living a carefree life.
The one who suffered was Bai Jie. She had once been a promising doctor—had she stayed in the profession, she might not have fallen too far behind Bai Yue. But she listened to Mother Yuan, resigned early, and went home to be a housewife.
Every time she saw Yuan Zhi being so lazy and unmotivated, she was filled with anger. But she had no real status in the household and didn’t dare speak out—after all, they were living off Mother Yuan’s money.
Not long ago, Bai Jie gave birth to a daughter. During her postpartum period, she became easily anxious and depressed. Seeing her husband refuse to lift a finger and ignore the baby’s crying, her heart turned cold.
She wanted to divorce Yuan Zhi, but Wen Jing advised her to think carefully—after all, there was a child now. The medical field was highly competitive, and when Bai Jie resigned, she had left on bad terms with leadership. After over a year out of work, even if someone hired her, she’d likely have to start from the bottom.
Not wanting to endure such hardship, Bai Jie could only wallow in self-pity.
At the wedding, Father Bai warmly shook hands with his in-laws. The two families exchanged compliments. When Mother Gu praised Bai Yue’s skills and how patients loved her for her surgical ability and patience—
Wen Jing chimed in with a sarcastic tone, “Well, she doesn’t have kids to take care of, of course she has plenty of time. It’s not like there’s much else to do when you don’t work.”
“Unlike my Bai Jie, who has to care for my granddaughter. A woman should have children, after all. Haven’t Gu Yin and Bai Yue been together for years now? Still no sign of anything?”
Father Bai’s expression darkened. “If you can’t say anything decent, then shut your mouth.”
Mother Gu was even more furious. She had always believed that Bai Yue’s lack of pregnancy was her own son’s fault. Hearing Wen Jing’s comment made her feel like it was an attack on her son.
She immediately raised her chin and shot Wen Jing a look. “Oh, so it’s you again, you nutjob! Father-in-law, I have to question your judgment—how did you end up with such a daughter-in-law? What age are we in now? Still going on about popping out babies?”
“Young people today have their own careers and passions. Not like your daughter, sitting at home all day. What’s the point of not having a kid? Nothing else to do, right? Oh, and I heard your son-in-law spends all day playing video games—what a perfect match they are! A real pot and lid combo!”
Mother Gu clapped her hands in delight. “Let me tell you, I’ve never lost a single argument!”
Bai Yue stifled a laugh beside her. She had never been able to out-talk that mother-daughter pair before, but with Mother Gu now in her corner, it felt like having a pro gamer help a newbie clear the beginner zone.
As they talked, Gu Yin and Bai Yue bumped into Yuan Zhi and Bai Jie. Yuan Zhi muttered a weak greeting, his eyes shifting like a guilty thief.
Bai Jie, on the other hand, seemed like a different person—perhaps she had come to terms with her situation. After a few polite exchanges, the two sides parted.
Not long after the wedding, Bai Yue got pregnant. Ten months later, she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. This fully proved that Gu Yin was indeed capable, but Mother Gu refused to believe it. She insisted that it was her sincerity that had moved the heavens and brought her a granddaughter. She even insisted on naming the baby “Tian Ci” (“Heaven’s Gift”).
No matter how Gu Yin argued, she wouldn’t budge. It wasn’t until Bai Yue stepped in that they avoided giving their daughter such an old-fashioned name. They named her Gu Nian—”to remember always, and what is remembered will echo back.”
“Sweetheart, you’d better thank your dad when you grow up. If it weren’t for me standing my ground, you’d be called Tian Ci!” Gu Yin muttered while holding the baby’s tiny hand.
“Pfft pfft pfft!” the baby replied, clearly uninterested.
In this life, Bai Yue fulfilled her dream of becoming a renowned doctor, enjoyed a loving marriage with Gu Yin, shared harmony with her in-laws, and treated her sister-in-law as a friend.
Gu Zhao Di changed her own destiny, built a career, managed the Gu family congee shop excellently, and even opened more branches. Yaya stayed by her side, always supportive.
As for Yaya’s father, rumor had it he remarried, and his new wife gave him a son. But after raising the child into adulthood, he discovered the boy wasn’t his. By then, he was old, too weak to fight, and had no idea where to find Yaya. He was left to suffer alone in his miserable old age.
Gu Lingyun, true to her name, started a business right after graduating from university. She seized the right opportunity and built her own success.
Bai Yue often called her a strong woman and wished she’d take a break, but Gu Lingyun was very satisfied with her life and didn’t want to marry. She loved Gu Nian like her own child and planned to leave everything to her.
Gu Nian grew up in a warm, loving home—graceful and accomplished, living a smooth and happy life.
“Congratulations, host. You have completed both the main and side missions. The side mission reward will be issued in the next task.”
“Emotions removed for the host. Preparing to launch the next mission.”
