Chapter 46: She’s Happily Thrilled Now
Zhou Xinyue stood by the window, her gaze dark and gloomy as she watched Xie Yunshu riding her bicycle from the east side of the hospital staff housing complex.
She sneered coldly. This woman clearly couldn’t keep herself calm anymore!
Xie Yunshu had come to deliver the divorce application form. The last divorce agreement had been torn up, so she had gone to the Xinhua bookstore to make over ten copies. Filing for divorce required an introduction letter from both parties’ workplaces. Since she no longer had a job, she just needed to go to the local government office to handle it.
Just now, she had brought the divorce application to Haicheng Hospital, where the director had repeatedly tried to mediate…
But no matter how much the director urged her to reconsider, the introduction letter had still been issued. She was following the rules; no one had the right to make things difficult for her! However, the director did say something quite reasonable: it’s best to negotiate, because if it ends up in court, wouldn’t that make all of Haicheng a laughingstock?
Nowadays, a divorce lawsuit would be publicized in the newspaper!
So, Xie Yunshu brought the divorce application to find Lu Zhixing. The one-week deadline had already passed. If he didn’t want to embarrass himself and affect his work, he should just sign it honestly. Otherwise, she wasn’t afraid of going barefoot against someone wearing shoes; if it came to the newspapers, so be it!
The Lu family didn’t mind losing face—why should she be afraid?
Xie Yunshu had always been like this: when she cared about you, she was sincere and wholehearted. But once she decided to pull back that care, even kneeling wouldn’t help! She didn’t care whether Lu Zhixing was truly regretful or just pretending—divorce was inevitable!
Watching Xie Yunshu knock on Lu Zhixing’s door, Zhou Xinyue’s lips curled into a smirk as she glanced at the little Wei in the corner.
“Come here!”
Little Wei bit his lip tightly, his face full of fear. He whispered, “Mom, don’t hit me. I’ll behave.”
“Shut up!” Zhou Xinyue snapped at him, poking his forehead with her long nail. “You’re useless! How dare you eat the things I buy? Later, you go next door and shout that I suddenly fainted!”
“Go to Uncle Lu’s house?” Little Wei’s forehead flushed red. He didn’t dare touch it with his hand. “What if he doesn’t come?”
Although he was still young, he was very sensitive and could tell that Lu Zhixing hadn’t been as kind to them lately. When he was discharged last time, the doctor barely showed up; another doctor handled the paperwork.
Because of this, Zhou Xinyue had thrown a big tantrum and smashed a glass cup when she got home. The shards scattered onto his face. He didn’t dare shed a tear but waited for her anger to pass before carefully cleaning up.
Zhou Xinyue kicked Little Wei hard in the stomach. The pain made him bend over.
“What use are you to me? You can’t even shout for someone properly. If Lu Zhixing won’t come, when I get back, I’ll skin you alive!”
Little Wei stayed crouched on the ground for a long time before raising his thin, pale face. His eyes were lifeless, like a robot’s. “Mom, I understand. I’ll behave.”
Only by not crying or making trouble could he avoid more beatings and still get food. Even if it hurt, he didn’t dare cry out loud. The few days he stayed in the hospital were probably the happiest time of his life—strange nurses were gentle and asked if he was hungry or hurt.
He was too young to understand why Zhou Xinyue hated him so much yet kept him around. He didn’t know where else he could go. Every night before sleep, his only wish was to eat enough the next day and get fewer beatings.
Sometimes, he even wished he could burn himself again, so he could be hospitalized—at least in the hospital Zhou Xinyue wouldn’t hit him so easily.
Zhou Xinyue was already lying on the sofa. To appear pitiful, she had put some powder on her face. She had thrown her coat aside, deliberately pulling the collar of her sweater wide.
She was really looking forward to seeing the heartbreaking expression on Xie Yunshu’s face when Lu Zhixing carried her out later!
When Lu Zhixing opened the door, Xie Yunshu immediately slapped the divorce application down in front of him. “Sign it!”
Clenching his fist, Lu Zhixing’s dark eyes stared at her. “Yunshu, I’ve already gathered the money. It’s one thousand two hundred yuan in total, including what Zhou Xinyue took.”
Upon hearing about the money, Xie Yunshu felt a bit better. “Give it to me. I’ll return the passbook.”
Lu Zhixing exhaled in relief, taking the money out of the drawer. “I don’t want the passbook. From now on, just give me some pocket money every month—any amount is fine.”
They were getting divorced—she definitely didn’t want his lousy money!
The one thousand two hundred and fifty yuan was all laid out in a big stack. Xie Yunshu counted it carefully before wrapping it in paper and putting it in her usual bag.
She took Lu Zhixing’s wage passbook and tossed it aside. “Now we owe each other nothing. You can sign it. Tomorrow, find some time to go to the local government office and get the divorce certificate.”
“Even so, you still want a divorce?” Lu Zhixing was a bit angry. He had always thought that even though she hadn’t graduated high school, she was sensible. Now, her aggressive attitude made him feel even more alienated.
Xie Yunshu looked at him like he was an idiot. “Lu Zhixing, why don’t you go see a psychiatrist? Haven’t I said the word ‘divorce’ at least eight hundred times? Can’t you understand human language?”
He could understand, but refused to believe it…
“This past week, I haven’t had anything to do with Zhou Xinyue. I’ve given you all the wages she used before. If there’s anything else, I’ll get someone else to handle it. Yunshu, I know Xueting always likes to bully you. You vented by hitting her, which is good. Don’t apologize or care about my parents. If you don’t want to go there anymore, that’s fine too. I’ll find you a new job if you lose the packing factory one.”
He went on talking and reached to grab Xie Yunshu’s shoulder. “If you want to support Xie Mingcheng’s college, I have no objection. Just don’t let me hear you say divorce again…”
His affectionate look only made her feel disgusted.
There were thousands of ways to avoid this situation today, but he hadn’t tried—not because he didn’t know how, but because he simply didn’t want to. Xie Yunshu clearly saw this and dodged his outstretched arm. “If you don’t want to get hit again, stay away from me.”
Lu Zhixing pressed his lips tightly and repeated, “Yunshu, if you regret the divorce, life without the Lu family will be very difficult for you.”
Difficult? She was happily thrilled now! Earning money every day, no longer having to endure or please anyone. Now, she only regretted not realizing it sooner.
