Chapter 47: “Is There Something Wrong With Your Brain or Are Your Eyes Blind?”
Xie Yunshu raised her eyes and sneered, “Lu Zhixing, isn’t it still you who paid back that ten thousand yuan to Zhou Xinyue? Who are you trying to fool?”
“She’s raising a child on her own…” Lu Zhixing couldn’t help but speak, his face turning pale. “Yunshu, just consider this money as repaying a favor. I told you, I won’t get involved in her matters anymore!”
Really? She didn’t believe it…
Before she could sarcastically retort, the half-closed door was suddenly pushed open. Xiaowei, with red eyes, rushed over, “Uncle Lu, please go check on my mom—she’s fainted!”
Lu Zhixing was startled and instinctively wanted to leave, but then stopped.
Facing Xie Yunshu’s half-smiling, half-sneering gaze, he clenched his fists tighter. “I’ll have Doctor Zhang take her to the hospital…”
Xiaowei’s forehead was flushed red, and his stomach bruised purple from a kick by Zhou Xinyue. The little boy was too young to understand much, only knowing that if Lu Zhixing didn’t go, he would get beaten badly.
“Uncle Lu, please go! My mom—”
The panic in Xiaowei’s eyes was genuine, not fake. His pale face was devoid of color, cheeks deeply sunken, and his gaze toward Lu Zhixing wasn’t pleading but filled with fear. Compared to other kids his age, he had none of the innocence a child should have.
Xie Yunshu frowned. Zhou Xinyue had taken so much money from Lu Zhixing every month, yet she raised the child like this?
As expected, Lu Zhixing’s heart softened. He seemed half as if persuading Xie Yunshu, half as if convincing himself: “Yunshu, I’m a doctor—I can’t just ignore a patient. Just this once. Once her condition stabilizes…”
“Go ahead. But if she dies, don’t blame me,” Xie Yunshu clicked her tongue and slapped a divorce application form on the table. “Don’t forget to sign it.”
Lu Zhixing took a deep breath. “Xie Yunshu, now is not the time to cause trouble!”
He said that, picked up Xiaowei, and strode out toward Zhou Xinyue’s place without looking back at Xie Yunshu.
The commotion was loud enough that Chen Xue peeked out and, seeing Xie Yunshu there, immediately sneered, “I thought you were someone with dignity, but you still came running yourself?”
Before, Xie Yunshu had been considerate of neighborhood relations and didn’t want to cause trouble for Lu Zhixing over petty conflicts. Now, she wouldn’t put up with that.
“So much talk—are you a duck or what? Just flap your lips all day, spraying nonsense everywhere! Always spying on other people’s trivial family matters—have you cleaned your own butt first?”
Xie Yunshu glanced sideways at her and happily watched Chen Xue’s face change color, then laughed again. “Sorry, I almost treated you like a human. Forgot you’re not one!”
“Xie Yunshu!” Chen Xue was speechless for the first time, her face flushed with anger, and her fingers trembled. “If you’re so capable, don’t come begging Doctor Lu. Too bad he always puts Nurse Zhou first!”
Xie Yunshu casually pulled out the divorce application from her pocket and slapped it onto Chen Xue’s face. “Open your dog eyes and see clearly who’s refusing to sign now! If it weren’t for the age mismatch, I’d think Zhou Xinyue is your own mother—always got Nurse Zhou on her lips!”
Chen Xue ground her teeth until they almost broke, then pulled the paper off her face and froze.
It was really a divorce application! At the bottom was neatly written Xie Yunshu’s name. As soon as Lu Zhixing signed, it would take effect—they’d be truly divorced with no more ties.
She could hardly believe it. “You really want a divorce?”
“Yeah, to make room for Zhou Xinyue’s mother!” Xie Yunshu smiled sweetly at her, then got on her bike ready to leave.
As for whether Zhou Xinyue really fainted or was faking it, that was none of her business. She wasn’t interested in sticking around for the drama—after all, she still had to prepare the meal order for the next day!
But when she tried to leave, someone wasn’t happy.
Lu Zhixing carried Zhou Xinyue out, and she weakly opened her eyes. She struggled slightly. “Zhixing, put me down. This will only make Yunshu misunderstand! I don’t want you two to be unhappy because of me!”
Lu Zhixing frowned. “You don’t look well. Why did you suddenly faint?”
Zhou Xinyue’s gaze slid from Xie Yunshu outside and she shook her head faintly. “I don’t know. Maybe because I didn’t eat breakfast. I often starve in the mountains. Maybe that damaged my stomach… Zhixing, please don’t worry about me. Yunshu’s going to get angry and leave again!”
She pushed Lu Zhixing away forcefully, then precisely threw herself in front of Xie Yunshu’s bike, tears welling up. “Yunshu, please don’t misunderstand. Zhixing’s only worried about me. I can go to the hospital by myself…”
Xie Yunshu sat astride her bike, one leg on the ground, watching her perform. “Such a drama queen. That pale face looks like you’re faking death!”
Annoyance flashed in Zhou Xinyue’s eyes. She helplessly glanced at Lu Zhixing, tears streaming down.
“Go cry somewhere else!” Xie Yunshu impatiently backed her bike up. She was busy and had no time to waste on this crazy pair.
Lu Zhixing stepped forward, helped Zhou Xinyue up, and said with restraint, “Yunshu, Xinyue is not feeling well right now. Can’t you stop being petty at times like this?”
“Doctor Lu, is there something wrong with your brain or are your eyes blind? Who was the first one to puke in front of me? If you want to go to the hospital, then hurry up and leave. Don’t block my way—I’m about to vomit my lunch.”
Xie Yunshu glanced at Xiaowei, who looked hollow and numb, then got on her bike and added, “Zhou Xinyue, your son looks sicker than you. Instead of flirting with men, maybe you should try raising your kid properly!”
Because of this, everyone in the courtyard naturally looked at the shrinking Xiaowei with complicated expressions.
This child rarely spoke and always avoided people, so he usually got little attention. After all, Zhou Xinyue was the one causing all the drama. But now everyone was shocked—was this really a five-year-old boy?
He had been taken from the mountains over a year ago, so how could he be so skinny?
Zhou Xinyue forced a smile, “My Xiaowei’s health isn’t good, and he’s a picky eater…”
Lu Zhixing’s brow furrowed. He stared at Zhou Xinyue with a questioning tone. “You just fainted, are you really okay now?”
As a doctor, he knew what state a person who fainted should be in. Zhou Xinyue looked pale and weak, but her mental state seemed fine. Also, Xiaowei was taken from the mountains by him originally. Although skinny, the boy had a rosy complexion then and wasn’t naturally weak.
How had Zhou Xinyue managed to raise the child into this condition on a monthly salary of just fifty yuan?
