Chapter 28 – Sulking
Right now, Wen Nian truly felt wronged.
Coming to this unfamiliar and barren era had already pushed her to the brink, and then she had to deal with heartless relatives and all these disgusting situations.
The only person she wanted to rely on—her so-called boyfriend—was like some flower that bloomed on the peak of a snow-capped mountain, distant and untouchable.
She had climbed for so long, and she hadn’t even brushed against a single leaf.
The man’s expression was cold and sharp. His piercing gaze locked onto her.
Without saying a word, he turned around, got into the driver’s seat, and slammed the car door shut right in front of her.
Through the window, she saw his stern face, hands resting on the steering wheel, eyes lowered as he prepared to start the engine.
Wen Nian glanced around. The night was shrouded in thick clouds; not a trace of moonlight in sight.
Only the car headlights illuminated the endless fields of tall, dense sorghum ahead.
Was he really planning to leave her here in the middle of nowhere?
The temperature in autumn dropped sharply at night. A cold wind blew through.
Only the rustling from the sorghum fields accompanied her, and Wen Nian shivered.
Goosebumps rose on her arms from the chill and fear.
She swore—if he dared to leave her here, she’d break up with him the moment she got back.
What kind of man throws his girlfriend into the wilderness during an argument? No matter how good his conditions are, she wouldn’t want someone like that.
Even though she thought this way, Wen Nian still lacked the backbone to hold her ground. She stepped forward and grabbed the car window.
She was afraid of the dark, and she couldn’t help but think of the terrifying stories she’d read about ghostly green canopies and such. Her heart pounded.
“What are you doing? You’re not seriously going to leave me here, are you?”
Lu Hanzheng drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, his sharp eyes narrowing at her.
“I’ll ask you one more time—what is our relationship?”
Wen Nian was both angry and scared now. She knew that in times like this, soft words and a little bit of coquetry worked better than stubbornness.
If she acted a little spoiled, it would surely get her out of this.
But her natural stubbornness reared its head—she didn’t want to give in.
She lifted her little chin defiantly, standing there, silently confronting him.
There was no way Lu Hanzheng would really abandon her. He’d just been completely rattled by her words earlier.
Now, sitting in the car, he felt stuck.
When this little mouth of hers spoke sweetly, it could wrap people around her finger so thoroughly they didn’t know north from south.
But when she was angry, she could infuriate someone to the point of bursting a lung.
He almost wanted to seal that tempting, water-glossed little mouth of hers shut.
After worrying for so long, she was still sulking with him.
This little woman was clearly his karmic nemesis.
Forget it.
Lu Hanzheng sighed.
Just as he was about to open the car door—
He saw her turn and start walking off in the opposite direction.
Wen Nian wiped at her tears as she walked.
That jerk!
She wasn’t going to beg him!
But she hadn’t taken more than a few steps before her head bumped into a firm, solid chest.
She’d been crying so hard she hadn’t noticed when Lu Hanzheng had gotten out of the car.
Holding her aching forehead, her tears fell even harder, silent but accusing.
Seeing her crying like a delicate flower battered by rain, Lu Hanzheng panicked. He realized he might have gone too far.
Wen Nian ignored him and tried to walk around, but no matter which direction she took, Lu Hanzheng always moved ahead to block her path.
She grew furious.
“Move.”
The man didn’t budge.
Wen Nian shoved him hard, and her fingers pressed against the tense muscle beneath his uniform.
She pushed for a long time, but his body didn’t even flinch—meanwhile, her own wrist went numb from the effort.
Lu Hanzheng didn’t say a word. He took out a handkerchief from his chest pocket and handed it to her.
Wen Nian didn’t take it. Her tears streamed down even more furiously.
She didn’t even look at him, turning her back to him and leaving him with nothing but her stubborn silhouette.
Lu Hanzheng quickly stepped forward and handed her the handkerchief again.
His voice softened as he said,
“Alright, alright, don’t cry. I won’t ask anymore.”
His sudden compromise caught Wen Nian by surprise.
She wasn’t crying to act pitiful—she genuinely felt wronged.
She really hadn’t meant to use her tears as a weapon to win him over.
Now that he was the first to back down, she instead felt even more spoiled and petty.
Why should she stop crying just because he told her to?
Seeing her cry even harder, Lu Hanzheng became flustered and at a complete loss.
“Don’t cry, I’m sorry. I apologize.”
“For what?” Wen Nian blinked, her crystal tears clinging stubbornly to her long lashes. Her soft voice still carried a sobbing tone.
A beauty is still a beauty—even when she cries, it has to be aesthetically pleasing.
She wasn’t the type to cry with a snotty nose and tears streaming down in a mess.
That question stumped Lu Hanzheng.
He was the young master of a military district—always a little tyrant growing up.
He was used to others admitting fault to him. When had he ever apologized to anyone?
Besides, he had always been the model child—the kind others’ parents praised. Outstanding, disciplined, almost never in the wrong.
“I… I don’t even know. Whatever you say I did wrong, I’ll change.”
The tall, handsome man in his neatly pressed military uniform gave a solemn promise.
Wen Nian couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
She’d never met a man this honest before.
Lu Hanzheng breathed a sigh of relief. It was the first time he’d ever apologized to someone.
Also the first time he’d set aside his pride and humbled himself in front of her.
And yet, it didn’t feel like suffering at all—instead, it felt sweet.
Only then did Wen Nian take the handkerchief and casually dab at the redness around her eyes.
Her emotions had come quickly and left just as fast.
“My introduction letter is about to expire. I went to the Wen family today to discuss transferring my household registration with Wen Jiancheng, but instead they arranged a blind date and tried to force me to marry Zheng Jiahe. When I refused, they drugged my food and locked me up after I passed out.”
Wen Nian usually wasn’t that stubborn, but when she was, not even nine bulls could drag her back.
Now that Lu Hanzheng had taken the first step to lower his guard, all the resentment in her heart melted away instantly.
She was even willing to explain everything to him.
“Then why didn’t you come to me?”
Hearing her explanation, most of Lu Hanzheng’s anger dissipated.
Wen Nian glared at him, still a little annoyed.
“You think I didn’t want to? But what right did I have?”
From beginning to end, it had all been one-sided. He’d never once clearly acknowledged their relationship as a couple.
“You kept asking me just now—what’s our relationship? Then why don’t you tell me—what exactly is our relationship?”
She figured they might as well clear things up today.
All this skirting around was just too exhausting.
If he really had no interest in her, she wouldn’t force it.
The world was a big place—she didn’t need to hang herself on this one tree.
Now it was Lu Hanzheng’s turn to be surprised.
Hadn’t he already made himself clear enough?
At first, yes, he had kept his distance from her. But after investigating her background and confirming things, he’d accepted her explanation.
He had maintained a polite distance, thinking once his memories returned, everything would become clear.
But the fact that he hadn’t pushed her away—had even silently allowed her to get closer—meant that he had already accepted her in his heart.
Lu Hanzheng hesitated for a moment, then awkwardly said,
“We’ve been getting along like this… so of course we’re in a relationship.”
If Wen Nian had been watching closely, she would’ve seen his ears turn completely red.
Hearing him admit it out loud, Wen Nian was genuinely surprised.
She’d expected him to keep on being passive—not taking initiative, not rejecting, and not taking responsibility either.
