Chapter 29 Why doesn’t she play by the rules?
He seemed to have lost control and began uncontrollably having diarrhea, with filth splattering everywhere. The scene quickly became chaotic. Chang Meili, who was closest to the bed, was the first to be hit, getting splattered all over by the naked Xie Jianguo. She stood frozen in shock, eyes wide open, too stunned to move.
Xie Jianguo fell into deep panic and shock, unable to believe that he was actually—right there in front of everyone—losing control like this. He covered his face tightly with both hands, then weakly collapsed back onto the bed, passing out again.
Seeing this, Zhao Xiulan was furious. She grabbed Chang Meili’s hair viciously and cursed, “You little brat! What on earth did you give my son to drink? How could it end up like this?” Her voice was sharp and piercing, full of anger.
Chang Meili, hurt from being pulled, struggled to explain, “Auntie, I… I don’t know why this happened. My family’s remedy must be fine. Just now, Dr. Li said Jianguo was already much better. How could he suddenly—”
Before she could finish, Zhao Xiulan interrupted, “Stop making excuses! You just want to harm my son! I’ll fight you!”
She pushed Chang Meili down and straddled her, clawing and scratching fiercely.
The villagers were still shocked by what had happened earlier, and nobody paid much attention to the two women fighting.
Li Shuisheng frowned but forced himself to walk over to Xie Jianguo’s side. After all, as a doctor, he couldn’t just stand by and watch Jianguo die. He quickly examined Jianguo’s body, frowning deeply.
He found that Jianguo’s body was actually fine—there was no major problem. He just didn’t understand why Jianguo suddenly had such a bowel movement.
Chang Meili, defenseless against Zhao Xiulan’s attacks, grit her teeth and explained, “Aunt Zhao, please don’t be anxious. I… I think this might be a detox reaction. Sometimes, the body shows abnormal reactions during recovery, which might be the body expelling toxins!”
However, Zhao Xiulan refused to listen. She believed Chang Meili deliberately didn’t warn them in advance just to embarrass her son! Her son having such an incident in front of so many people—how could he ever hold his head high in the village again? Just the thought made her hate Chang Meili even more. She even saw her as a jinx.
“Detox my foot! I think you want to poison my son! You sly vixen! I won’t let you off!” Zhao Xiulan shouted again, ready to attack.
“Zhao Xiulan, stop! Jianguo really is okay now. You should just take him home first,” Li Shuisheng said, looking at the filthy room, his face a bit grim.
Zhao Xiulan hesitated for a moment but, hearing that Jianguo was truly okay, she quickly got up from the floor. Just as she wanted to get close to Jianguo, the stench forced her back.
Reluctantly, Zhao Xiulan had someone load Jianguo onto a flatbed cart and took him back home.
When Chang Suisui returned to the Youth Placement Center, she immediately heard the explosive news. She was shocked.
“Looks like Chang Meili is going to marinate in that mess,” Chang Suisui couldn’t help but joke, but Zhang Fen quickly covered her mouth.
She glanced around before saying, “Better not joke about that. There’s no shower at the cattle shed, so Chang Meili came to the center to wash up. She’s there now…”
Chang Suisui raised her eyebrows, “No wonder the center smells weird lately. That explains it. I’ll go pick some pomelo leaves and boil water to get rid of the bad smell!”
“Chang Suisui!” Suddenly, an angry voice came from behind her.
Chang Suisui and Zhang Fen turned around to see Chang Meili standing not far away, her face deathly pale and eyes burning with resentment, as if she could shoot flames.
“What… what are you two talking about?” Chang Meili’s voice trembled, clearly furious.
Zhang Fen’s heart skipped a beat but she kept calm and smiled slightly, trying to ease the awkwardness. “Ahem, little Chang, we were just saying… the center’s environment needs to be improved, so everyone can live more comfortably, right? Boiling pomelo leaves is an old tradition from our elders, to dispel bad luck and bring good fortune.”
Upon hearing this, Chang Meili’s eyes immediately welled up with tears. “Sister Fen, we’re all youth sent here in response to the call, supposed to be like sisters, so why do you talk bad about me behind my back?”
Her tone was almost plaintive, making her look particularly pitiful.
“Have I done something wrong to deserve this? Why do you all treat me so badly?”
Chang Suisui looked at her watery, pitiful “white lotus” act and couldn’t help but twitch her brow. A sarcastic smirk curled on her lips.
“Who are you performing for? You know exactly what you’ve done wrong, don’t you?”
Chang Meili choked and whimpered as if deeply wronged. “Cousin, how can you say that? I know I upset you before, but can’t we just get along?”
Chang Suisui rolled her eyes, “Chang Meili, don’t force me to hit you here and now. You want? I’ll shove your face into the cesspit and fill you up.”
Chang Suisui’s words stunned Chang Meili, almost making her lose her composure. Seeing others watching, she quickly added, “Cousin, can’t you just not want to see me do well and just want to see me fail?”
Chang Suisui shrugged carelessly and said, “Yeah, what’s wrong with that?”
Chang Meili was speechless. Why wasn’t she playing along?
Her carefully maintained expression cracked for a moment but she hurried to patch it up, “How can you say that? You’re my cousin! Why are you doing this to me?”
She was losing ground and desperately trying to drag Chang Suisui down with her. If people thought Chang Suisui was mean, then her previous actions wouldn’t be noticed, and since Chang Suisui kept her mouth shut, she wouldn’t spread rumors.
Just as Chang Meili was thinking this, Chang Suisui calmly said, “You still remember I’m your cousin? When you seduced my fiancé, did you ever think about that? When you stole the money and tickets my parents gave me, did you ever think about that?”
Chang Meili was once again left speechless. She hadn’t expected Chang Suisui to bring all these things out so openly. Didn’t she know what shame was? Having your fiancé taken by someone else was hardly something to be proud of.
