Chapter 47: The speed of supernatural power recovery is soaring
Zhao Xiulan and Xie Xiaohua were startled by the sudden voice. When they saw who it was, their expressions darkened further. The person in front of them wasn’t anyone else—it was Zhao Hang, who had previously been locked up in the cowshed just like Chang Meili.
Zhao Xiulan took a wary step back. “Comrade Zhao, what do you mean? We don’t understand,” she said cautiously.
Because of the relationship between Zhao Hang and Chang Meili, Zhao Xiulan naturally didn’t have a favorable opinion of him. Especially now that he was approaching them, seemingly eager to help—Zhao Xiulan saw it as a bad omen. Her son was supposed to marry that shameless hussy Chang Meili, and Zhao Hang was clearly a rival. Why would he help them out of the kindness of his heart?
Zhao Hang opened his mouth, then paused when he noticed Zhao Xiulan’s guarded expression. “Aunt Zhao, I know you don’t trust me, but we have the same enemy—we both don’t want to see Chang Suisui have an easy life…”
Xie Xiaohua’s eyes lit up. “Then what good id—”
Before she could finish, Zhao Xiulan yanked her back and shot her a fierce glare. Then she turned to Zhao Hang and said coldly, “Comrade Zhao, whatever grudge you have with Comrade Chang is none of our business. It’s late. We’re heading back.”
Without giving Xie Xiaohua a chance to argue, she dragged her away.
Zhao Hang watched their retreating figures, the corners of his mouth curling into a sinister smile…
Meanwhile, as they walked under the moonlight, Xie Xiaohua looked at Zhao Xiulan in confusion. “Mom, he hates Chang Suisui just like us. Why didn’t we let him help?”
Zhao Xiulan raised her hand and smacked Xie Xiaohua on the head. “Are you stupid? He and your brother both like that little hussy Chang Suisui. You think he’d help us out of the goodness of his heart?”
Xie Xiaohua pouted, unconcerned. “Even if he wants to marry Chang Meili, what does it matter if he can take Suisui down? Mom, you don’t even like Chang Meili either, right?”
Zhao Xiulan’s brows furrowed. It was true she didn’t like Chang Meili, but now the entire village knew that their family’s Jian’guo was going to marry her. If, at this point, Zhao Hang ended up with Chang Meili, their family would be utterly humiliated!
She glared at Xie Xiaohua again. “Don’t even think about it. If your brother’s marriage falls through, I’ll skin you alive!”
“…Fine.” Xie Xiaohua pouted. If not now, then she’d just wait until her mother wasn’t paying attention to contact Zhao Hang secretly.
At the same time, back in the room, Chang Suisui and Xie Yu had fallen into silence.
After a moment, Xie Yu cleared his throat and finally spoke. “I’m sorry, Comrade Chang. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have been dragged into all this…”
His eyelids lowered, and his fists clenched slightly at his sides.
He had always known that his sister-in-law was a social climber. When he was still in the army, she treated him fairly well, thinking he might be useful someday. But ever since he was discharged due to injury, she saw him as nothing more than a burden.
She must have found out at some point that Chang Suisui had been visiting his house, and that’s when she concocted the plan to slander them—all to clear the way for Xie Jianguo to marry Chang Meili.
Xie Yu had once thought that, out of gratitude for how his brother had cared for him, he’d look after him in return. But now he realized his brother was not suited to be a true soldier of the people.
Chang Suisui had originally intended to say “it’s fine,” but when she saw Xie Yu’s dejected look, her watery eyes sparkled mischievously and her lips curved into a sly smile.
“Well, since it’s your fault, how are you planning to make it up to me?” she asked, locking eyes with his handsome ones.
Xie Yu didn’t dare meet her gaze. She had finally agreed to marry him, and he was afraid that after all the trouble just now, she might change her mind. He knew all too well he wasn’t worthy of her now. But the way she approached him so trustingly made his heart stir.
Just now, he’d felt a faint sensation return to his legs. That had filled him with hope for their future. But Zhao Xiulan had come and shattered it all in an instant…
He took a deep breath and said, “You can ask anything of me. As long as I can do it, I’ll do my best to make it up to you.”
He tried his best to keep his tone even as he spoke.
Chang Suisui didn’t notice his nervousness and casually replied, “If I can ask for anything, then I’d better think carefully. Wouldn’t want to waste such a good opportunity.”
Maybe, she thought, she could use this chance to snuggle up to him a bit more. That way, her supernatural powers might recover faster!
Her eyes gleamed with delight just at the thought of it.
“Actually… even without all this, you could’ve asked me for anything,” Xie Yu added earnestly. “As long as I can do it, I’ll try my best.”
Chang Suisui hadn’t expected this rough-around-the-edges man to say something so sweet. Her eyes blinked, lips curving in amusement. “That mouth of yours is pretty sweet. Did you dip it in honey, or are you always this smooth, Comrade Xie?”
As she spoke, she slowly leaned closer to him.
“I don’t—” Xie Yu began, but the rest of the words got stuck in his throat.
Just then, as he looked up, he felt his lips brush against something soft!
His body immediately stiffened, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest.
Chang Suisui also froze. She had been planning to sneak a kiss when he wasn’t paying attention to test how quickly it would help her powers recover. But before she could act, he had “taken the initiative.”
Feeling the recovery speed of her powers surge incredibly fast, her gaze on Xie Yu grew dangerously focused.
Xie Yu, thinking she was mad at him for his reckless behavior, wanted to explain but couldn’t find the words. He quietly leaned back, trying to put some distance between them.
But Chang Suisui acted like she hadn’t noticed at all. In fact, she moved in even closer, slowly and deliberately.
As she drew nearer, her eyes lowered, those glistening water-like irises tugging at his soul like hooks. He knew he should move away, keep his distance.
But his Adam’s apple bobbed involuntarily…
