Chapter 10: Anti-Magic Stone
As Rein slowly entered the arena, the crowd instantly peaked in excitement, and successive cheers filled the dueling arena.
“Go for it, Young Master Damon, defeat this scoundrel who has tainted all the goddesses of our academy.”
“Go for it, Young Master Damon; Goddess Sophia is watching you.”
“Young Master Damon, you are so handsome; I want to marry you.”
The arena resounded with nothing but support for Damon.
Some of those voices came from plants planted by the Mick family and from commoners deceived by the hype.
Although House Gray had also planted many supporters, few believed them because of Rein’s notorious past misdeeds.
As a result, the voices supporting Rein were quickly drowned out by those cheering for Damon.
Damon, watching Rein yawning as he slowly made his entrance, taunted in a tired tone.
“Rein, if you were scared, why would you embarrass yourself by coming so late?”
Hearing that, Rein gave a playful look at Damon, who had been baking in the blazing sun.
“Heh, calling you shrimp brains was right on point; I did say noon, but I never said what time, did I?”
“How rude; you have no noble etiquette at all, and your mouth is full of those filthy words; today you are bound to lose.”
Rein couldn’t be bothered to respond; he hated nothing more than people using noble etiquette to keep him down.
Just as the two of them stood glaring and exchanging harsh words, a teaching assistant from the academy arrived beside them with a group of people carrying a batch of weapons and equipment.
The teaching assistant came between the two and spoke.
“Young Master Damon, Young Master Rein, you may consider handing me your Magic Rings for safekeeping, but if you don’t trust me, you don’t have to. However, if you draw any item from your Magic Ring during the duel, you will automatically lose.”
Both Rein and Damon shook their heads to decline, and the assistant nodded in understanding before pointing to the weapons rack beside him and saying, “Please select your equipment and weapons, gentlemen.”
Before long, the two had each chosen their own gear from a pile of racks.
Watching the equipment Damon selected, Rein’s mentor Qiao Na frowned and asked the Dean, “Dean, since when did our academy have Anti-Magic Stone equipment? This is unfair to Rein.”
Qiao Na had conducted the deepest research on Anti-Magic Stone, so he was the first to sense that something was wrong.
The other mages standing beside Qiao Na also gradually realized it and began to protest.
“Yeah, Anti-Magic Stone is so suppressive to us mages; this duel is too unfair.”
“Dean, say something!”
The Dean remained silent and looked at his secretary Jenny with a puzzled expression.
He had no idea why the academy had acquired Anti-Magic Stone equipment.
Jenny flipped through the documents in her hand, suddenly grew pale, and whispered something into the Dean’s ear.
Cliff’s face instantly turned dark, and before he could say anything, the Mick family head Brent spoke up.
“Everyone, this does not violate the duel’s rules. The rules state that only weapons and equipment already in the academy may be used for combat, and since the academy has Anti-Magic Stone equipment, why shouldn’t Damon be allowed to use it?”
Dean Cliff frowned as he addressed the mages present.
“Everyone, I only found out myself just now that the academy was gifted a batch of equipment treated with Anti-Magic Stone powder last night, and the benefactor was…”
Cliff looked at the person who had just spoken.
“Mick family head: Brent.”
Cliff felt deeply offended by Brent’s actions; even the younger generation’s duel was being interfered with by their elders, which was truly disgraceful.
Bang!
Hearing this, Fude immediately rose to his feet and smashed the chair he had been sitting in to pieces.
“Brent, are you courting death?! You keep using these conspiracies and schemes against your own people?”
Fude glowered at Brent in full rage, vowing in his stance that if Brent did not explain himself, he would settle this with him today.
Fude would accept it if Rein lost due to lack of strength, but he would never tolerate losing because of others’ schemes.
Brent faced Fude, the Dean, and the assembly of mages, beads of cold sweat appearing on his forehead as a fifth-rank warrior, yet he still forced himself to say, “Gentlemen, I did not break any rules. The Mick family did gift the academy a batch of Anti-Magic Stone equipment, but which law states that the Mick family cannot gift equipment to the academy? And since the academy has Anti-Magic Stone equipment, why shouldn’t Damon be allowed to use it?”
Everyone was immediately speechless.
Indeed, imperial law regarding mages was not very comprehensive, and Brent had taken advantage of this loophole.
Just as Fude was about to step forward and punch Brent in the face, Jonas intervened to stop him.
The shockwave from their scuffle instantly drew the attention of everyone present.
Only then did everyone notice that the senior steward standing beside Fude was also a Rank 6 mage.
House Gray was truly hiding its strength.
Jonas leaned toward Fude and whispered something in his ear.
Fude then shot a fierce glare at Brent, snorted heavily, and sat back down in the freshly replaced chair.
The Dean also withdrew his accusing gaze from Brent, but his original good mood vanished instantly.
The mages present looked at Brent with dark expressions, thinking to themselves: from now on, no more magical tools or devices would be sold to the Mick family.
Brent heaved a sigh in his heart; he had provoked quite a few people this time, but he quickly shook it off.
After all, this was intended to boost Damon’s prestige, and losses were unavoidable.
On the dueling arena platform, Damon donned the Anti-Magic Stone armor, Anti-Magic Stone longsword, and Anti-Magic Stone round shield.
Rein, however, opted for a mage robe that amplified his magical power.
“Rein, you are bound to lose today.”
Damon clearly knew what his equipment was and appeared extremely arrogant.
Rein sneered, “Shrimp brains.”
After the assistant saw that both were fully equipped, he handed each of them a jade token.
The token was meant to save their lives and ensure their safety if either fell out of control.
“Please step back one hundred meters.”
Rein and Damon each retreated.
As the two prepared to begin, the noise in the dueling arena immediately died down.
Once they had opened up the distance, the assistant produced an arcane device and fired a beam of light into the air.
“Pop!”
A dazzling firework exploded on the dueling arena platform.
The duel began.
With a bang.
Damon propelled off the ground and charged at Rein, causing cracks to spider across the platform under his feet.
Damon held his shield in front of him and tore toward Rein at high speed.
The one hundred meters vanished in an instant.
Seeing the unstoppable Damon, Rein instantly summoned a crackling spear of lightning in his hand.
[Angry Thunder Spear]
Then he hurled the thunder spear at Damon.
The spear struck almost instantly, colliding with Damon’s shield.
The impact reverberated against the shield, shattering the spear into fragments that scattered across the ground, leaving black marks in its wake.
Damon reached Rein and swung his longsword.
[Guardian Cross Slash]
[Barrier Technique]
Watching Damon close in and use Barrier Technique, Rein saw the faint blue barrier block the cross slash.
Then Rein stamped his foot and used [Earth Tremor], causing the ground to shake violently and throwing Damon off balance.
Rein immediately stepped back to widen the distance between them.
The power of the angry thunder technique just now left Rein somewhat puzzled.
Lightning magic was one of the most destructive types of magic, so how could that shield remain completely unmarred?
Insulated?
As if sensing Rein’s question, Damon sneered, “Rein, I told you that you would lose today without a doubt; this equipment was treated with Anti-Magic Stone powder, and its magical resistance is terrifyingly high… how do you expect to beat me?”
