Princess Changting repeatedly reminded Jiang Zhanwei that he didn’t need to risk his life for military achievements, emphasizing that safety was paramount. She reassured him that as her grandson, he could live a good life without holding high military positions.
Jiang Zhanwei smiled, reassuring the Princess.
About forty-five minutes later, the old Marquis began to feel tired, prompting Jiang Zhanwei and Lu Man to take their leave.
The old Marquis then requested, “Grand… daughter-in-law, let Pea… sleep with me.”
Since Sweet Pea’s name was too burdensome, he settled for “Pea”.
Naturally, Lu Man disagreed, saying, “Sweet Pea is too small, it will cry if it sleeps elsewhere at night. Grandfather likes it, so I’ll let it come and play with you tomorrow afternoon.” Considering her upcoming visit to the Lu family, she thought it would be perfect for Jiu to bond with the old man. Continuing, she added, “There’s also another adorable little girl, just like Sweet Pea. Her name is little Jiu, and Sweet Pea listens to her the most. How about letting her and Sweet Pea come to keep you company?”
Reluctant to make Sweet Pea cry, the old Marquis agreed upon hearing that others would come to play with him, saying, “Fine, I’ll listen, and I want to eat… eat… sour-sweet.”
“Sour-sweet” referred to yogurt with added fruits.
With a suppressed smile, Lu Man remarked to the Princess, “Grandfather is getting clever again, knowing how to negotiate.”
Princess Changting chuckled and agreed.
Hearing the old man calling for “Pea” and asking for “sour-sweet”, along with his childlike behavior, Jiang Zhanwei standing nearby felt somewhat bewildered. Was this the same stern and unsmiling grandfather?
Moreover, why did it seem like Lu Man was their true granddaughter, the three of them acting so familiar, while he, as the grandson, felt neglected and sidelined?
Returning to Orchid Pavilion, Lu Man suggested, “Third Young Master, shall we talk in the study? I don’t want to disturb the younger siblings’ rest.”
Understanding her unspoken thoughts, Jiang Zhanwei had matters to discuss as well, so he followed her into the western study room.
Seated in the study, with the lamps lit by Mama Wang and after Liu Ya poured tea, Lu Man couldn’t contain herself, “Third Young Master, about the Lu family’s matter…” she was eager to discuss.
Jiang Zhanwei glanced at her and said, “I don’t know how long it will take to go home next time, and I’m not sure when that will be. So, in the next few days, I’ll help you handle that matter. The day after tomorrow, I’ll accompany you to the Lu family since General Lu is also returning home.” There was a hint of compassion in his eyes as he continued, “However, no matter how much resentment you hold towards General Lu and the Lu family, some things shouldn’t escalate too much. Simply evict those two women from the Lu family and reclaim Renhe Hall.”
Tears welled up in Lu Man’s eyes as she spoke, “Life is so unfair. My mother supported that whole family with her dowry, and they not only showed no gratitude but also drove her away. I’ve been bullied by them for over a decade, almost driven to hang myself… Yet some people seem to get away without facing consequences.”
Jiang Zhanwei responded, “Your father is currently serving as a military official in the camp and will be heading to the border in two months. Our unit has a unique mission. We can’t have any negative rumors about him, nor can he carry resentment onto the battlefield. The old lady must also remain untouched—for filial piety’s sake and to keep General Lu’s mind clear. Sometimes, making them pay a price doesn’t mean stripping them of everything immediately.”
Observing the mix of sorrow and anger in Lu Man’s expression, Jiang Zhanwei added, “This northern expedition is dangerous. If General Lu doesn’t return, he will have settled his debts. If he returns safely, we can address other matters later.”
Looking at the man before her, Lu Man realized that he, too, was about to head to the front lines, uncertain of his return.
As she contemplated her upcoming visit to the Lu family to seek justice, she knew she had to bring up Hong Ling and reveal certain truths. Despite the unsavory incident involving the original Lu Man being seduced by Chen Fei, it was essential to expose the truth to seek revenge and ensure Mrs. Xiao Chen faced consequences. She decided to disclose all details, even though she had no desire to leave a positive impression on him, knowing he already held a negative view of her.
Lu Man hesitated but eventually disclosed everything about Mrs. Xiao Chen’s manipulations to secure control of Renhe Hall, leading her into compromising situations, and how the original Lu Man overheard their conversations.
As Lu Man delved into the matter, she couldn’t help but seek justice for the original Lu Man. Tearful and trembling, she expressed, “I was misled. I felt so lonely and helpless at home that when someone showed me kindness, I believed it was real. I never thought life could be so joyful, and I could be so happy… When I overheard their conversation, it felt like falling from heaven to hell. I was devastated, wanting to end my life. But I couldn’t bear to let those who harmed me live peacefully, so I attempted suicide in the bridal chamber. After that ordeal, I realized many things… Third Young Master, scold me if you must. I know I was wrong and brought trouble upon you. The children taught by the Young Mistress are not only pitiable but also tragic and hateful, harming others and themselves. I know I don’t deserve you, and if you want to divorce me, I won’t complain. Please, based on all I’ve done for the old Marquis, Eighth Young Master, and Second Young Miss, keep this secret for me. Let me not endure further hardships in the future. In truth, I haven’t done much with that person. We merely met a few times in the garden, he sent me a letter, and gave me gifts twice.” She couldn’t bring herself to mention holding hands with the original Lu Man and Chen Fei.
After pouring out her heart, she awaited a thunderous response or mocking remarks. She understood that such actions in ancient times tarnished one’s reputation. Most men wouldn’t tolerate such behavior, especially someone as vengeful and petty as Jiang Zhanwei.
Would this incident be grounds for a swift divorce?
Unable to meet Jiang Zhanwei’s eyes, Lu Man gazed at her hands, tears streaming down. Her sorrow wasn’t as deep as it seemed, but the emotional weight was overwhelming. Was it the residual emotions of the original Lu Man’s bitterness lingering in this body? The young girl had resolutely sought revenge against the Lu family, but her plans were disrupted by this unexpected journey through time, shattering her desires and schemes.
The room fell into an eerie silence, the only sounds being Jiang Zhanwei’s heavy breathing and Lu Man’s choked sobs, echoing distinctly.
After a brief moment, a resounding thud was heard as Jiang Zhanwei’s hand slammed on the desk, causing the tea cups to jump and spill tea. Through gritted teeth, he exclaimed, “Vile, truly vile!”
Startled, Lu Man looked up, stammering, “Thi… Third Young Master…”
