Chapter 72: Too Embarrassing
Outside the door, people stood around in small groups, exchanging glances and dragging their feet—they didn’t want to leave. Everyone was curious to see how this drama would end. The two people inside couldn’t possibly stay hidden in there all afternoon, right?
That fierce little girl outside probably wouldn’t have the patience to wait long either. In less than ten minutes, she’d likely start banging on the door again…
Just then, Chen Xue finally showed up, bringing Lu Xueting with her. She hadn’t meant to be late—it was just that this spoiled young lady, Lu Xueting, took forever. It took her sixteen whole minutes just to change her shoes.
And besides, who could have predicted that a wild card like Lin Cuiping would suddenly pop up and throw the whole plan off?
By now, a crowd had gathered outside the apartment door. They stood silently, exchanging juicy gossip through glances alone. But Lu Xueting, completely unaware of everything, strutted over with her handbag, perfectly dolled up like a proud peacock. “What are you all doing at my brother’s place?”
Chen Xue realized something was wrong. She knew what had just happened inside and quickly grabbed Lu Xueting’s hand to stop her from opening the door. “Um, maybe we should wait a little…”
“Wait for what? Didn’t you say Sister Xinyue is inside waiting for me?” Lu Xueting didn’t take her seriously and pushed the door open.
Inside, Zhou Xinyue had just gotten dressed—her hair still messy. Lu Zhiwei had already put on a shirt, but the air reeked with an awful, indescribable smell. The bedroom door was wide open, and the bed was a complete mess.
Lu Xueting blinked in confusion. “Brother? Sister Xinyue? What… happened here?”
She was inexperienced and saw that both of them were dressed, so her mind didn’t immediately jump to the obvious conclusion.
Lu Zhiwei pulled on his coat with a cold expression and stormed out without saying a word. But as he passed Chen Xue, he threw her a chilling sentence: “I will get to the bottom of this!”
Chen Xue shuddered. She swallowed hard and turned to Zhou Xinyue, cautiously asking, “Xinyue?”
What’s going on here? She hadn’t even said anything yet—what did he mean by “get to the bottom of it”?
As Lu Zhiwei walked out the door, the onlookers quickly averted their gazes, pretending they were just passing by. Only Lin Cuiping bluntly called out, “Are you two done putting your clothes back on? I need to move stuff in! So annoying! Made me wait this long—and what is that smell in there? Disgusting!”
Lu Zhiwei recognized her—she was a friend of Xie Yunshu’s—and his steps faltered. Regardless of whether it was voluntary or not, something had happened between him and Zhou Xinyue. What did that mean for him and Yunshu?
“This was just a misunderstanding…” Lu Zhiwei couldn’t help but explain. Clenching his fists, he closed his eyes and added, “Please don’t tell Yunshu.”
Don’t tell Xie Yunshu? As if! Lin Cuiping had been dying for a juicy scandal to throw in Yunshu’s face. She could never out-argue Yunshu before, but now that something this humiliating had happened, she finally had the upper hand. And he wanted her to keep it quiet?
No way. Absolutely not. Not only was she going to tell—she’d make sure the entire apartment building knew. Let Yunshu be humiliated for once!
Feeling delighted, Lin Cuiping, ten yuan richer and with a front-row seat to the drama, shouted at the top of her lungs: “Yeah, right! You sleep naked with some other woman and expect me to keep it a secret from Xie Yunshu? Why should I? You two are divorced! Who you sleep with is none of my business—but keeping quiet about it? No way! Everyone saw you both naked under the same blanket…”
Ugh, disgusting! The more she said it, the more grossed out she felt—but that just meant she’d disgust Yunshu even more later!
The onlookers tried to hold back their laughter. No one knew whether to pity Lu Zhiwei or to despise him. Maybe Yunshu had known all along that something shady was going on and deliberately sent this loud-mouthed friend to stir the pot?
Naked, she said—twice! Just hearing that made their faces turn red. Who knew how the people involved felt.
Lu Zhiwei had never been this humiliated in his life. He said nothing more, storming out of the apartment with a chilling aura, leaving Zhou Xinyue to deal with the mess.
He had pitied her, thought she had it tough—but that didn’t excuse her climbing into his bed! Drunk or not, if she hadn’t made a move, would any of this have happened? He was tricked—set up…
He’d had a plan. He had already decided: in the past, he hadn’t treated Yunshu well, never truly lowered his pride to understand her. Now that they were divorced, he was going to win her back. But before he could act, this happened.
Even if he was a victim too, could Yunshu ever forgive him?
He didn’t dare to think. Ever since the divorce, he had lost all certainty. He knew she used to love him deeply—but now? Now, he wasn’t so sure.
The only confidence he had left was that Yunshu didn’t have a job and came from a bad family. She wouldn’t find someone better than him. One day, when she realized that, she’d regret letting him go so easily. And maybe then, he could earn her forgiveness.
Back in the residential courtyard, Lin Cuiping had already started directing movers to carry out the wardrobe.
Lu Xueting was still in shock. She stared blankly at the two men hauling out furniture, her mind replaying Lin Cuiping’s words: naked under the blanket together… Even if she was inexperienced, she knew exactly what that meant!
Two people—who were they? Sister Xinyue and her brother? No way! She had always wanted Zhou Xinyue as a sister-in-law, but not like this! Not in such a disgraceful way! It was disgusting! The whole Lu family would become a laughingstock!
Zhou Xinyue clutched her collar tightly, her face pale like a flower battered by frost.
During that moment, Lu Zhiwei had still called out Yunshu’s name over and over again. She had already felt humiliated—if it weren’t for her desire to marry him quickly, she would never have endured it! But the humiliation hadn’t ended with the act—it continued even after!
That loud, shrieking woman had done it on purpose—she was Xie Yunshu’s friend. Zhou Xinyue remembered her from the apartment complex, where she had called her “fox” and “sister” with that same screechy voice.
The spectators slowly dispersed. Staying longer would make them seem like they were there just to enjoy the show. But it was already too late—this story would spread like wildfire throughout the entire Haicheng Hospital by the end of the afternoon.
Zhou Xinyue took a deep breath. Now wasn’t the time to argue about Lin Cuiping’s motives. She bit her lip and clutched Lu Xueting’s hand, tears streaming down her face.
“Xueting… your brother just had a little to drink… I don’t know how things turned out this way! How am I supposed to live after this…”
