Chapter 55: You want both, double standards…

Xie Gui and Chang Suisui looked toward the entrance of the educated youth courtyard at the same time, just in time to see Chang Meili standing there with a furious expression.

She had originally planned to sneak back while no one was at the educated youth spot to retrieve something from her space, intending to take it to the Xie family and earn a few brownie points with Zhao Xiulan and Xie Xiaohua. She knew Zhao Xiulan had reluctantly agreed to let Xie Jianguo marry her, and if she didn’t win Zhao Xiulan over now, she’d definitely be tormented after marrying into the family. She was also hoping the village chief could help recommend her to the village clinic. That’s why she’d come back secretly.

But who would’ve thought that the moment she entered the courtyard, she’d overhear the village chief asking Chang Suisui to go study at the clinic! How was that fair?

Seeing Chang Meili, Xie Gui couldn’t help but frown deeply. He really couldn’t bring himself to like this girl. All she ever did was cause trouble. He had no idea what his son was thinking, wanting to marry someone like her.

Chang Meili thought the silence from Xie Gui and Chang Suisui meant she had caught them red-handed making backdoor deals. Emboldened by her imagined moral high ground, she straightened up and declared, “Village Chief, shouldn’t the village clinic recruit openly? You privately choosing Chang Suisui is completely unfair!”

Xie Gui: “…”

Chang Suisui: “…”

If there was anyone else in the village who could treat patients, would he have even come to Chang Suisui? Recruit from the whole village? Most folks here hadn’t even been to middle school. And she thought they could be doctors?

Xie Gui gave Chang Meili a look like she was an idiot, momentarily at a loss for words.

Chang Meili mistook their silence for guilt. Thinking she’d hit the mark again, she became even more smug. She lifted her chin slightly, continuing in a sanctimonious tone, “Village Chief, I believe people must own up to their mistakes. Only by recognizing our faults can we progress. I hope you handle this clinic matter openly so we can all grow together!”

Xie Gui was getting a headache from her convoluted words. He turned to Chang Suisui, asking, “Comrade Chang, what on earth is she babbling about?”

The corner of Chang Suisui’s mouth twitched. She replied dryly, “She’s saying she’s upset the clinic didn’t pick her.”

Chang Meili: “…”

Xie Gui, suddenly understanding, looked at Chang Meili again. He hadn’t originally planned on letting her into the clinic, but thinking back, she had studied at a health school. Compared to the rest of the villagers, she certainly had an edge.

After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded. “Fine then. The clinic will take you too. I’ll make an announcement later and see if anyone else with medical experience wants to join. You can all study under Old Li.”

If someone from the village could really learn and become a doctor, it would be a good thing. If not, they’d make do until the town could send another doctor.

Chang Meili hadn’t expected the village chief to agree so easily. But when she heard he planned to bring in more people, her expression darkened. She’d already forgotten most of what she learned in school. With Chang Suisui there, she was already annoyed—if more people joined, she’d have even more competition.

Frowning, she said directly, “Village Chief, the current village doctor is still injured. Wouldn’t it be too much for him to take on so many students?”

Chang Suisui saw right through her and let out a cold laugh, mocking, “Didn’t you just say the village should openly recruit? What, now you don’t want to ‘grow together’?”

Chang Meili’s face immediately dropped. Before she could speak, Chang Suisui added with biting sarcasm, “Comrade Chang, your ideological awareness is really lacking. With your mindset, how are you going to save lives as a village doctor?”

“Chang Suisui! Don’t talk nonsense! I was only worried about the doctor’s health!” Chang Meili snapped back without thinking. She’d already embarrassed herself in front of the village doctor before and wasn’t going to let Chang Suisui trap her again.

Chang Suisui sneered, “Then if you’re really worried, don’t go. Wanting everything both ways—typical double standard dog…”

Chang Meili’s eyes went wide. “Who are you calling a dog?! Chang Suisui, you’re too much!”

She was about to yell more when she caught sight of the cold glint in Chang Suisui’s eyes and instinctively backed down, inching closer to the village chief for protection. “Vi–Village Chief, I–I was just speaking the truth! Look at Chang Suisui, she’s clearly trying to hog the village doctor position because she’s afraid I’ll outshine her!”

Xie Gui frowned, then snorted, “What’s there for her to be afraid of? Afraid of your family’s ancestral diarrhea remedy?”

He still remembered the day Xie Jianguo was brought over reeking of… that. The memory made him grimace.

Chang Meili’s face turned even uglier. She knew the village chief held that incident against her.

Pressing her lips together, she spoke decisively, “Village Chief, I demand a fair competition for the village doctor position!”

If she didn’t fight now, Chang Suisui would definitely overshadow her. She’d spent her last life always being second to Chang Suisui. In this one, everything Suisui had, she would take.

It was just a village doctor job—nothing she couldn’t handle. If not for her spring water mysteriously vanishing, she wouldn’t be afraid of Chang Suisui at all!

But it was fine. She still had a trump card. Once she got into the clinic, she’d make the village doctor see her true worth. Then she’d prove she could surpass Chang Suisui!

With that thought, her gaze toward Chang Suisui grew increasingly defiant.

Xie Gui glanced between the two and sighed heavily, waving his hand. “Fine, we’ll leave it at that.”

He was exhausted.

Chang Meili, seeing the village chief leave, quickly followed—but not without first throwing a smug look at Chang Suisui. “I’m going to tell Jianguo-ge this good news right away. I bet he’s missing me right now…”

Chang Suisui couldn’t hold back a laugh. “In that case, you better tell your Hang-ge too. After all, he misses you just as much.”

Sure enough, the moment those words left her mouth, the village chief’s expression turned even colder.

Chang Meili had only meant to flaunt her connection with Xie Jianguo, but Chang Suisui had to go and bring up Zhao Hang, that scumbag—in front of the village chief no less!

Just as expected, Xie Gui’s face darkened further upon hearing that.

Chang Meili shot a vicious glare at Chang Suisui before scrambling after him. “Uncle Xie, listen to me, about Zhao Hang…”

Chang Suisui watched her retreating figure with a smirk. Thinking about how smug Chang Meili had been just moments ago, her eyes narrowed slightly—and with a wave of her hand, something instantly appeared in her palm.
