Chapter 121: “What Are You Making Trouble For?”
Inside the room, steaming hot noodles were placed into a bowl, drizzled with scallion oil, and topped with two pieces of leftover pork belly from the night before. Li Fenlan, worried that Xiao Wei was too skinny, added an extra egg:
“Eat quickly, after you finish I’ll take you home! From now on, you can’t just run out at night. What if you meet strangers? If you’re hungry, come here during the day, I’ll make you noodles, okay?”
Xiao Wei took a sip of the hot soup; his little chest warmed up, and his dull eyes gradually brightened. He nodded heavily and then quietly called out: “Grandma.”
Li Fenlan smiled: “This kid, I thought you wouldn’t even speak!”
After finishing the bowl of noodles, Xie Yunshu wrapped an old scarf around Xiao Wei’s neck and took his hand, leading him outside:
“The Lu family won’t beat you now. If you’re hungry, just speak up. Once you’ve eaten and grown up, no one will be able to scare you.”
Everyone has a different fate. What did it matter how pitiful Xiao Wei was? She couldn’t be a savior. Lu Zhixing was a troublesome man — blind and rotten — but not outright cruel. At least he wouldn’t abuse the child.
Outside the apartment block, Lu Zhixing clenched his fists, eyes full of hostility as he stared at Shen Subai:
“What are you doing here? What business do you have with Yunshu?”
Shen Subai was taller and broader-shouldered than him. He glanced carelessly at Lu Zhixing, showing no intention of answering, then strode straight into the building.
Lu Zhixing blocked his way, teeth clenched as he spoke:
“Captain Shen, Yunshu is not the kind of woman you want. Why bother getting involved with her?”
Shen Subai stopped and sneered:
“Lu Doctor, on what grounds do you speak to me?”
Before Lu Zhixing could reply, Shen Subai calmly asked:
“Ex-husband?”
The words struck Lu Zhixing hard, his eyes reddening. Angrily, he grabbed Shen Subai’s collar:
“You have no chance with her! I’m going to remarry her! Even if Yunshu is angry now and refuses, she will never be with you! If she knows your family, she’d stay far away from you!”
He thought it was already unfair that he married Xie Yunshu; how could Shen Subai, with his family background, even be allowed to marry a twice-divorced woman like her?
No, even if not twice-divorced, Yunshu couldn’t possibly match someone like Shen Subai.
Lu Zhixing understood that Yunshu had suffered injustices at the Lu family’s hands, and after vowing to remarry her, he would never let her endure that unfair treatment again. After all, through Zhou Xinyue, his parents could see Yunshu’s goodness, and he would treat her better.
But Shen Subai was different — not from Jingbei. He couldn’t marry Yunshu. If his family humiliated or harmed her, it would be worse than the Lu family. He couldn’t protect Yunshu, and Shen Subai couldn’t either.
Lu Zhixing gripped him tighter, his usually gentle expression turning fierce:
“I won’t allow you to hurt Yunshu! She’s not someone for you privileged kids to toy with. Stay away from her!”
Shen Subai’s face grew cold. Just as he was about to make a move, his peripheral vision caught a familiar flash of red. He loosened his fist and lightly laughed:
“What if I say no?”
“You—!” Lu Zhixing’s face darkened. He shoved Shen Subai outward, gritting his teeth:
“As long as I’m here, I won’t give you a chance!”
The shove wasn’t very hard. Shen Subai was taller and stronger, but still slammed hard against the wall, wincing in pain.
Lu Zhixing looked down at his own hand, surprised at how little force he’d actually used. Was Shen Subai pretending?
Before he could say anything, a much stronger shove hit him, forcing him to stagger back several steps despite his height.
Xie Yunshu quickly steadied Shen Subai, her small shoulders unhesitatingly supporting him. Her eyes glared fiercely at Lu Zhixing:
“What are you crazy about? You can’t even properly take care of your own wife and child, but you come here like a mad dog biting people?”
After scolding Lu Zhixing, she anxiously looked at Shen Subai:
“Captain Shen, are you okay?”
Though quick-tempered, Xie Yunshu was kind-hearted. When she saw Shen Subai pushed down by her ‘ex-husband’, her guilt peaked.
Lu Zhixing’s face drained of color, staring at her in disbelief:
“You’re defending him? Yunshu, he means you harm, he’s doing this on purpose! He…”
“Enough! Are you annoying or what? You’re the one who pushed Captain Shen, and now you accuse him? Lu Zhixing, how come I didn’t know you were not just blind, but also this stupid and bad?” Xie Yunshu was impatient with his nonsense. Shen Subai had been helping her all this time, even bought her the motor tricycle, and now Lu Zhixing had hurt him!
She softened her tone, lowering her head:
“Captain Shen, did you get hurt anywhere?”
Shen Subai frowned slightly, moving his body a little to the side:
“Men and women shouldn’t have inappropriate contact. I wasn’t forced and I can still stand.”
“Did you sprain your ankle?” Xie Yunshu bit her lip and offered her shoulder:
“Then lean on me. I’ll take you home and check. Sorry, really sorry…”
Shen Subai sighed:
“No big deal. I came to remind you to cover the motor tricycle with a thick cloth to avoid frost at night. Just didn’t expect… never mind. I won’t bother arguing with Dr. Lu — after all, he’s your husband.”
Lu Zhixing clenched his teeth. That man was deliberate.
After the police station incident, his manly instincts made him investigate Shen Subai. Everyone described Shen Subai as serious, upright, and righteous.
But now, none of that seemed true.
Xie Yunshu grew angrier the more she thought. If she hadn’t been holding Shen Subai up, she really wanted to slap Lu Zhixing again:
“We’re divorced. What nonsense are you making? Captain Shen is kind and good. He would never have the filthy thoughts you do! Lu Zhixing, get lost, okay?”
Lu Zhixing stared blankly, eyes reddening:
“Yunshu, he’s lying to you. You believe him but not me?”
Xie Yunshu didn’t even raise her eyelids, helping Shen Subai laboriously walk inside the building:
“What would I believe you for? Instead of wasting time, why don’t you care more about Xiao Wei? Why are you making trouble here? You keep using the excuse of pitying the child to give money to Zhou Xinyue. Has a single cent gone to the child? Is he well fed or warmly dressed? Lu Zhixing, don’t make me despise you!”
Lu Zhixing helplessly watched as the two leaned on each other, moving toward the well-lit building. He felt like he was forever left behind in the dark.
Suddenly, he recalled that once, Zhou Xinyue was also pushed down by Xie Yunshu, and he stood on Zhou Xinyue’s side without hesitation, scolding Yunshu for making trouble just like this…
