Chapter 25: You Don’t Have as Much Money as I Do
“No problem! I’ll wait for you here.” A strong sense of trust made the man beam.
“Brother, you can’t carry all this stuff.” Even though he was composed, he was still a boy, and Leng You still worriedly reminded him.
“Trust me.” After repeated tests over the past few days, Xiang Wentian had fully understood the limits of his own strength. Five or six hundred pounds was nothing to him; he was only considering how to carry Leng You after carrying the grain.
The two continued walking into the alley.
“Do you want eggs?” someone asked.
Wild eggs and bird eggs were abundant in the valley, so they naturally wouldn’t spend this wasted money.
“Do you want flour?” someone else came over and whispered.
“How much is it per pound?” Leng You spoke.
“85% flour, 19 cents; 75% flour, 27 cents.” The person replied.
“The government sells 85% flour for only 18.5 cents, why are you selling it so expensive?” Leng You immediately questioned the person, pulling the exact number from her memory.
“A child even knows this?” The person exclaimed.
“Fifty jin of 85% flour, 18 cents.” Leng You quickly stated the quantity, worried that Xiang Wentian would ask for one or two hundred pounds.
After all, she was still young, even if she was strong, she couldn’t exert herself without limits; injuring her strength would be a lifelong problem.
The reason they didn’t buy the better 75% flour (the later commonly eaten strong flour) was because in this era where everything was natural, 85% flour was also very fragrant.
Unlike rice, the indica rice not only had a very poor taste, but also often contained stones. Because the stones and rice were the same color, even picking wouldn’t necessarily clean them all.
“Okay! Wait a minute, I’ll go get the flour for you.” Seeing Leng You’s adult-like manner, the person found it very amusing. Without haggling, he turned around to get the flour.
“Here’s the money!” Seeing the person quickly carrying a bag of flour, Leng You quickly took out ten yuan and handed it over.
“So it’s the little sister managing the money! Here’s your change.” The person was amused again.
“Brother, let’s go back! If we want to buy anything, we’ll come again tomorrow.” Leng You was afraid that Xiang Wentian would continue buying things.
“Hmm!” If Leng You hadn’t spoken, Xiang Wentian really wanted to buy some other things.
Carrying Leng You, and carrying the bag of flour in one hand, Xiang Wentian strode to find the person selling rice.
“Young man, are you going to carry such a heavy thing?” Seeing Xiang Wentian put Leng You down, then put the bag of flour into the rice bag, and then carried the large bag directly onto his back and tied it with a rope, the rice seller stared in astonishment.
“Let’s go.” Xiang Wentian didn’t pay attention to the rice seller, and took Leng You’s hand and left.
People living in the alley would come out to sweep the snow every day, so the snow wasn’t very thick, and Leng You didn’t have any trouble walking.
Leaving the alley and arriving under a large tree, Xiang Wentian dug out the simple skis and ski poles he had hidden in the snow.
With a bend of his waist, Leng You was lifted into the air.
“Ah!” With a cry of surprise, Leng You instinctively hugged Xiang Wentian’s neck.
She had wondered before if Xiang Wentian was going to put her in the rice bag too? Originally, she thought he would hold her in front of his chest, but that seemed difficult.
“Hold tight.” Xiang Wentian patted Leng You’s little butt again.
Leng You: …
The soul of a nearly thirty-year-old woman trembled fiercely three times.
Xiang Wentian used his long scarf to bind Leng You to his chest. After tying it, he tossed her slightly, as if checking if the binding was secure.
“Let’s go!” With a forceful thrust of his ski poles into the ground, with one hundred and fifty jin of grain on his back and Leng You bound to his front, Xiang Wentian leaped up lightly as a swallow.
Leng You buried her face tightly in Xiang Wentian’s chest. Along with the howling wind, there was the strong and powerful heartbeat like a drum.
For the first time in her past and present lives, a feeling called “security” clearly entered Leng You’s brain, and then through every nerve of the cerebral cortex, to her limbs.
Although they were “carrying a heavy load,” the time it took to come and go didn’t differ much. They arrived home by noon.
“What’s this?” Wen Jiuyue heard the door creak and quickly came out of the house, seeing Xiang Wentian untying a large burlap sack from his back.
She thought the two children had gone to the deep valley again.
“My brother and I went to the county and bought grain.” Leng You raised her little head and told Wen Jiuyue.
“What? You went to the county? How did you go? You came back so quickly? How is that possible?” Wen Jiuyue was full of disbelief.
“Brother carried me, and we went skiing.” Leng You looked at Wen Jiuyue with some sympathy.
These repeated shocks over the past few days were a test for the old woman’s heart.
“Skiing? What’s that? Is it a sled? No, that’s not right!” Wen Jiuyue’s brain was a mess.
“I’ll show you later.” Xiang Wentian had already put down the sack on his back, untied the mouth, and took out the bag of flour.
“Grandma Wen, this is flour, and this is rice. It’s enough for Grandpa Xiang, Grandpa Bai, and us to eat for a while.” Leng You pointed out the grain to Wen Jiuyue.
“All flour and rice? Goodness! So much? Where did you get so much money? Did Xiaotian pay for it?” Wen Jiuyue felt she had never bought so much fine grain in her life, and was shocked again.
“We sold a ginseng root and got nine hundred yuan.
Brother paid for the rice.
Brother, here’s your twenty yuan.”
Leng You took out all the money on her body. Nine yuan was spent on flour, leaving eight hundred and ninety-one yuan. She took out two ten-yuan bills and handed them to Xiang Wentian.
“I need to eat too.” Xiang Wentian’s face was very unhappy.
Leng You’s clear accounting made him very uncomfortable.
“I have so much money now, and so much ginseng.” Leng You’s implication was, you don’t have as much money as I do.
“I have money, I don’t need it.” Xiang Wentian’s expression didn’t soften.
“How about this? There are still many herbs in the valley. We’ll split the money we earn from selling them.” Leng You finally had an idea.
Although those herbs weren’t as valuable as ginseng, there were also precious varieties. If they were sold, it would certainly be a considerable income.
“Okay.” Seeing Leng You frown, knowing that if he didn’t agree, the little girl would definitely get angry and ignore him, Xiang Wentian could only nod.
Wen Jiuyue: …
She was shocked again. She had never seen so much money in her life.
“Grandma Wen, keep this five hundred yuan. When I earn some more money, we can build a new house.
I’ll give Grandpa Xiang and the others two hundred yuan so they can buy some necessities.
Tomorrow, my brother and I will go to the county to buy some more things.”
Leng You calmly allocated the money.
Xiang Wentian’s eyes were filled with smiles. The little girl kept refreshing his understanding of what was normal for an eight-year-old child. He had even doubted more than once, is this really an eight-year-old child?
