Chapter 5: You Did Well, the Catgirl Gets White Bread as a Reward
【Quest: Take Nora to the Adventurers’ Guild, accept a commission, and complete it
Current status: Completed
Reward delivered】
As soon as the words left the air, a tiny vial of crystal-clear holy water materialized in Reiner’s palm.
Reiner had never heard of holy water and had no idea what it did.
【Quest update: Buy Nora a piece of white bread.
Quest reward: A small jar of jam】
That was exactly what Reiner had in mind.
Finishing one quest earned precisely 1 silver coin, and he could always make more.
He patted Nora on the shoulder, about to speak when her inner voice reached him.
(Something doesn’t feel right.)
“Master, bandits have their eyes on us.” Nora bent her body slightly and reached for her pouch.
The moment she finished speaking, an arrow shot toward her.
She failed to dodge, and the arrow buried itself deep in her right arm.
Two more arrows flew at them; one went wide, and the other slammed into Reiner’s wooden round shield.
Enduring the pain, Nora flung three throwing knives at the thicket where the arrow had come from.
A wail rose from inside the bushes.
At the same time, four masked bandits in fur clothing and armed with short daggers leapt out of the surrounding undergrowth.
Nora’s ears snapped upright, and she sent her remaining three knives whistling through the air.
In an instant she took down one of the bandits.
The other three brandished their daggers and charged, roaring.
One circled around to deal with Nora while the other two faced Reiner head-on.
After a year in this world, Reiner had encountered danger plenty of times, and fighting bandits had become routine.
He timed it right, blocked a slash with his shield, then swung his hammer across the man’s knee, crippling him.
Another bandit seized the chance to sneak attack; Reiner leaned back to evade the dagger and brought his hammer down, smashing the man’s skull open.
When he looked back, he saw Nora had been tackled to the ground.
Reiner hammered the bandit pinning her and sent him flying.
Sadly he was still a step late; a dagger was lodged in Nora’s chest, blood gushing out while her eyes fixed on Reiner in agony, and she blacked out within seconds.
Reiner hurriedly pulled out the healing holy water he had just acquired.
【Item name: holy water
Usage: Pour it directly into the wound to make it heal rapidly.
Note: Cannot be used on creatures that are already dead.】
Reiner wasted no time, yanked the dagger out, and flipped back the wool blanket covering Nora.
Her chest was tightly wrapped with cloth strips.
Reiner had no time to undo them gently, so he sliced them apart with his knife.
He then poured the holy water into the wound.
A miracle occurred: fresh flesh grew over Nora’s injury, and within a dozen seconds it was completely healed, though a faint scar remained.
Seeing the danger gone, Reiner draped the wool blanket over her and waited quietly at the side.
A few minutes later Nora regained consciousness.
She lifted the blanket, looked at the spot where she had been stabbed, and her eyes filled with wonder.
(How is this possible? I was… I was about to die.)
Reiner asked, “How do you feel?”
Still unsure what had happened, Nora instinctively covered her chest and said, “Thank you, Master.”
She then glanced at the arrow stuck in her right arm and tried to pull it out.
“Stop, the arrowhead has barbs; pulling it out will cause more damage.” Reiner squatted for a closer look and added, “Leave it alone, we’ll deal with it at home.”
With that said, Reiner got up and searched the bandits’ corpses.
He found three hunting bows and five slightly rusty daggers.
When no money turned up, he stripped them bare; their fur coats would fetch a decent price too.
The spot where they had been ambushed was not far from the village, and 20 minutes later Reiner arrived home.
He dropped the loot, then took a roll of bandages from a wooden box.
First he wrapped Nora’s arm several times to apply pressure and stop the bleeding.
Then he carefully snapped off the arrowhead and extracted the shaft.
Fortunately the blood loss was not severe.
“Bear with it.” Reiner rinsed the blood from her arm with clean water and then poured a little strong liquor on the wound for sterilization.
Nora bared her teeth in pain, her sharp nails carving grooves into the wooden table.
While soothing her, Reiner packed plant ash onto the wound and wrapped several more layers of bandage over it.
“All right, try not to move your right hand for a few days; I’ll change the bandage every day and check whether the wound is inflamed.”
Nora nodded and softly thanked him again.
At the same time, her inner voice drifted into Reiner’s mind.
(I was bought by a kind person; I’m really lucky.)
Reiner told her to rest at home, then went to the village to sell the spoils taken from the bandits.
He sold the hunting bows to the village hunters, the fur coats to the farmers, and the rusty daggers to the old blacksmith at the entrance of the village.
Because winter was coming, many villagers needed extra clothing, so the fur coats fetched a good price.
In total he earned 4 silver coins.
Seeing it was still early, Reiner led Nora toward the city.
First he went to the Adventurers’ Guild to exchange their reward.
He now had 5 silver coins and 4 copper coins left in his purse.
Next he visited the bakery and bought 2 pieces of the white bread Nora had been dreaming about and 10 of the cheap black bread they usually ate.
That left only 3 silver coins in his pocket.
Reiner sighed softly.
So broke!
Nora, however, showed no such concern; on the way home she kept her eyes glued to the white bread in the bag.
Her drool nearly formed a trail behind them.
As soon as they got home, she sat in the corner and gazed at Reiner with pleading eyes.
(Just a taste… may I have just a taste?)
Yet she refused to speak up.
Reiner glanced at her and grinned wickedly. “Hungry, are you? Come over and eat some bread.”
At that moment, the quest updated.
【Quest: Buy Nora a piece of white bread
Current status: Completed
Reward delivered】
The words had barely faded when a jar of deep-red jam appeared out of thin air in Reiner’s hand.
【Quest update: Head to Dawn Forest north of Melod
Quest reward: 5 silver coins】
Reiner blinked in surprise.
Dawn Forest lay north of Melod and was not far from here.
What business did he have there?
Although puzzled, he followed his rule of accepting every quest and never letting them pile up, so he decided to go after Nora’s arm healed.
Snapping back to the moment, Reiner saw she still had not come over, so he repeated himself.
Nora froze, then pointed to herself in disbelief. “Me?”
Reiner sliced the white bread open and spread on a thick layer of jam. “That’s right, I promised you, and I’m pleased with your performance today. This is your reward.”
Nora hurried over, accepted it with both hands, and stared at the bread with solemn devotion.
Her serious expression resembled that of a devout believer gazing upon the deity she worshiped in a cathedral.
“Little kitty, you may eat the delicious white bread.”
Nora nodded, opened her mouth wide, bit into the bread, and savored it slowly.
A few seconds later, two streams of tears rolled down her cheeks, and she said excitedly, “It’s so good…”
