Chapter 23: Try Pointing at Me Again

“I hit your mom; you’re not mad, right?”

After returning to the station and finishing the statement, Lu Li cradled the hot tea the young policewoman handed him and quietly asked the Chu Zining inside his body.

Chu Zining remained silent for a moment before whispering, “You did what I’ve always wanted to do but never dared.”

Lu Li smiled faintly; after something this vile, if Chu Zining still showed leniency toward her mother, he would stop helping her.

“The matter has been fully investigated, little sister, you can go home with your mom now,” the policewoman said gently.

Lu Li asked, “How are you dealing with that man?”

The policewoman answered, “Relax, he’s confessed, and we’ll punish him according to the criminal code.”

Chu Qing looked at him without expression, but when he drew near her eyes flew open and she swung a heavy slap at him.

Lu Li froze, covering his face in confusion.

He felt fear and numbness surge from the Chu Zining inside him.

Chu Qing pointed at Lu Li and cursed, her red-polished fingernails jabbing his forehead without pause:

“So you’ve got skills now, even hitting people! Do you know how hard it was for me to find a man? Now he’ll dump me for sure!”

“It’s all because of you, you useless burden; because of you I missed so many good marriages!”

“Speak! Did you seduce Zhao Quan on purpose? Otherwise why would he go into your room? Did you wiggle your hips to lure him?”

After enduring the tirade, Lu Li looked up at that twisted face and said coldly, “Point at me again and see what happens.”

“I’m pointing at you, so what? A mother has every right to discipline her daughter; are you going to hit your mother?” Chu Qing tried to jab his forehead again.

Lu Li caught her arm, turned, and sent her flying with an over-the-shoulder throw.

Chu Qing crashed to the ground, feeling her tailbone split, and as she stared into Lu Li’s icy eyes she remembered the hazy slaps from earlier and went cold with fear.

Her daughter, a soft persimmon she could beat and scold at will, when had she ever dared resist? She seemed like a different person!

Lying on the floor, she wailed, “Ow, heaven’s unfair! My daughter hit her mom! I fed her, clothed her, paid her tuition, and she pays me back with a shoulder throw… what sin have I committed!”

Lu Li ignored her hysteria, turned to the policewoman, and said, “Sis, my mom’s mind isn’t right; let’s just take me home.”

On hearing this, the policewoman finally snapped out of her trance.

What had just happened? The mom slapped the daughter for no reason, the daughter said nothing and replied with a perfect shoulder throw?

This was just too, too, too…

Staring at Lu Li, the officer felt this girl was unbelievably cool.

Chu Qing scratched her face. “Same way, Officer; you’re a good person, you can’t leave a weak woman to hail a cab, right?”

When you were smacking your daughter I didn’t see a weak woman… the officer held her tongue; domestic issues were beyond her brief.

You’re clearly just saving cab fare… Lu Li didn’t expose her either.

He told the officer, “Sis, please drive; family shame shouldn’t be aired, but some farts just can’t stay in the pants. If it stinks too much, feel free to wear a mask.”

The policewoman laughed helplessly and shook her head.

“Who are you calling family shame!” Chu Qing finally realized Lu Li was insulting her obliquely and glared at him with clouded eyes.

That same look again… Chu Qing shuddered, shrank back, and dared not speak.

It was this look she had seen just before her beating.

Why is the mother so much less mature than the daughter… the officer sighed. “Seat belts, please.”

Very soon the policewoman delivered Lu Li and Chu Qing back to their apartment complex.

Chu Qing gave Lu Li one last glare and hurried into the stairwell.

After thanking the officer, Lu Li strolled upstairs.

Inside the bedroom he heard Chu Qing next door cursing, “Even a dog protects its master, but this burden only gets in the way; now she even hits me… she’s worse than an animal!”

Lu Li walked over and knocked on her door, his voice low. “Come on, open the door.”

That same frigid tone… Chu Qing fell silent at once, her voice turning meek:

“No! Absolutely not! I’m going to sleep! Why should a mother get out of bed to open the door for her daughter? You’ve got some nerve!”

What a bizarre form of self-consolation… Lu Li snorted and returned to his room.

“Thank you,” Chu Zining whispered inside him.

Lu Li shook his head. “I’m your second personality; helping you is helping myself, no need to thank me.”

“Mm-hm.” Chu Zining fully accepted the second-personality explanation. “You’re amazing; if I had your skills I wouldn’t be bullied.”

Lu Li smiled slightly, and just as he was about to say more a dating-game notification popped up in his mind:
