Gao Feng nodded slightly, unsure whether to believe her words or not, but he glanced at the crossbow in her hand a couple more times.
Seeing her hide it behind her back, he tactfully looked away and said, “Miss, you’re thoughtful; these two deserved to die.”
“Well, since these two are already dead, how about we split whatever they had on them?” Gu Yundong didn’t mind taking things from dead bodies, especially in these times.
But Gao Feng seemed disgusted, “I don’t need anything. Miss, feel free to take whatever you want.”
Gu Yundong was just asking out of courtesy, she could tell this Mr. Gao was not short of money.
Once he agreed, Gu Yundong crouched down to search through the pockets of the two men.
Gao Feng turned back to the house, while Gu Yundong paused briefly in her actions, then continued rummaging through the clothes as if nothing had happened.
There were quite a few things on these two men, five taels of silver, a jade pendant, two daggers, and three small packets of chloroform, among other tools.
Gu Yundong only took the silver and the jade pendant, leaving the daggers behind. After a moment’s thought, she also took the packets of chloroform.
After finishing her search, Gu Yundong was about to leave when Gao Feng came out again, carrying a cloth bag.
“Today, I thank you for your help, Miss. Here are some mantou and pancakes for you, please accept them.”
Gu Yundong was taken aback, looking at him in surprise.
She accepted the bag and said, “It’s really not necessary. Even if I hadn’t come, with your brother’s skills, dealing with them would have been easy.”
Gao Feng’s mouth twitched; if her movements in taking the items weren’t so smooth, this statement would have been even more convincing.
“When you go out, please close the gate behind you.”
“Alright.” Gu Yundong took the items and briskly walked away.
She didn’t ask how they would deal with the two bodies, nor did they exchange names. They had just met by chance on the road of refuge, and there wouldn’t be another chance to meet again in the future.
Gu Yundong returned to her own small courtyard. The mantou and pancakes in her hands had already cooled down, but she could reheat them tomorrow, providing an extra meal for a few people.
The three people on the kang were still asleep, curled up together.
Gu Yundong frowned; it was currently a time of significant temperature difference between day and night. It was scorching during the day, but the temperature dropped sharply by more than ten degrees at night. They only had one thin blanket, which wasn’t enough to cover even Mrs. Yang’s feet. Despite piling all their clothes on top, it was still too cold, explaining why they were shivering in their sleep.
She subconsciously wanted to bring out a quilt from her space, but then thought about the neighbors and decided to be cautious.
So she simply took some firewood and lit it nearby. Although this household had run out of food, there was still a lot of firewood stacked against the courtyard wall, which conveniently served her purpose.
As the fire burned, the temperature in the room instantly rose.
The three people, who had been curled up on the kang, felt more comfortable, their brows relaxing, sleeping more soundly in the warmth.
Gu Yundong sat beside them, her ears perked up. She didn’t expect that just half an hour later, there would be commotion outside the door.
She stood up abruptly and walked out of the house, standing on the jar as before, looking outside.
She saw a carriage approaching the door, and Gao Feng from the neighboring courtyard was carrying a young man into the carriage.
Sensing her gaze, Gao Feng raised his head and nodded at her, “Apologies for disturbing you, Miss.”
“Are you leaving?” Gu Yundong asked.
“Yes.” Gao Feng finished speaking and got into the carriage. With a flick of the reins, the carriage rumbled away into the distance under the moonlight.
Only when even the shadow disappeared did Gu Yundong climb down from the jar.
She went into the house, sat for another moment, then walked to the edge of the kang and picked up the little girl, Gu Yunko, who was sleeping in the middle.
