The little girl felt fragile, as if she might break with just a little force.
Gu Yundong didn’t dare to exert much pressure, holding her very cautiously.
“Little sister, wake up.” Holding her a bit away from the kang, she gently shook her to rouse her.
The little girl blinked groggily, looking at her with a confused expression, “Big sister?”
“Here, open your mouth and drink this.”
“Oh.” Gu Yunko didn’t even ask what it was or see clearly what was handed to her, she just obediently opened her mouth and drank it down.
After a few sips, she paused, “It’s sweet?”
“If you like it, drink more.”
Gu Yundong was holding milk from her space, slightly warmed over the fire before giving it to Gu Yunko to drink.
The little girl was extremely weak, despite being three years old, she could barely walk steadily now. Most of the day was spent in a daze.
Gu Yunko was different from Gu Yunshu. The latter, being a boy, naturally received a bit more food in their family. Thus, among the four of them, he had the best physical condition.
Gu Yundong lacked experience in caring for children, but milk from her space seemed like the best thing to give her for nutrition.
After drinking most of the bowl of milk, Gu Yunko couldn’t help but let out a burp.
“Tasty.”
Gu Yundong set the bowl down, watching her enjoy it with half-closed eyes, feeling a softness in her heart. Her tone softened, “Go back to sleep.”
Placing the little one in the middle, tucking her in, Gu Yundong returned to sit by the fire.
The little girl wasn’t fully awake to begin with, and after a moment, she fell asleep again.
The whole house was quiet. Gu Yundong couldn’t help but look up at the wooden beams above her, suddenly enjoying this environment.
It was so quiet, without the sound of corpses gurgling anymore. There was no need to be constantly tense and ready to fight. And she even had family around her now, something she had never dared to think about in her past life.
It felt… like a dream.
“Dongdong…” Suddenly, Mrs. Yang’s voice came from beside her.
“Are you awake?” Gu Yundong suddenly came to her senses, realizing that quite some time had passed.
“I… I have to get up.”
It was already the hour of the tiger (3-5 am), but according to modern time, it was just past four, and the sky wasn’t even light yet.
However, Mrs. Yang had developed a biological clock. Back at home, she used to get up this early to cook, feed the pigs, and clean the yard. Later, on the road of refuge, since her mind wasn’t quite right and no one arranged for her to stand guard, although they sometimes had to travel at night, Mrs. Yang’s waking time remained consistent.
Gu Yundong stood up to stretch, picked up a bag from the side, and handed it to her, “Here, eat this.”
Mrs. Yang looked into the bag, her eyes lighting up, “Pastries and mantou?”
“Shh.” Gu Yundong glanced at the two children still sleeping.
Mrs. Yang immediately covered her mouth, vigorously shaking her head, making sounds like “Oh” and “Ah,” which unexpectedly looked somewhat cute.
Gu Yundong twitched her mouth a couple of times, “You eat something to fill your stomach first. Leave the rest on the fire to toast. When they wake up, they can have some. I’m going to sleep for a while. If you hear any sounds outside or if someone comes, be sure to wake me up, okay?”
Mrs. Yang was already fully awake, and Gu Yundong trusted her to keep watch. She needed to catch a few hours of sleep, or her body couldn’t handle it.
“I understand.”
Mrs. Yang nodded earnestly, and Gu Yundong finally lay down to sleep.
It wasn’t clear how long it had passed, but she was awakened by the heat. Just as she was opening her eyes, she heard Gu Yunko’s tender voice.
“…Really, what I drank last night, it was sweet and delicious.”
