Mo Xin was trapped inside the overturned car, warm blood flowing down his cheeks into his eyes, causing them to sting and his vision to blur.
He took a moment to recover before he could see the scene outside the car clearly from his upside-down perspective.
The official car that was leading the way in front was the source of the explosion. The vehicle was now engulfed in red flames, emitting billowing black smoke and a pungent smell of gasoline.
Meanwhile, the crowd on the street scattered amidst the blaring of car alarms, but he couldn’t see any suspicious figures.
“General?” Vincent in the front row was shaken by the impact, but with the safety airbag protecting him, his injuries were not severe. He regained his senses and asked about Mo Xin’s condition first. “General, are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
Mo Xin’s seatbelt buckle had deformed. He took out a folding knife from inside his combat boots, cut the seatbelt, and then proceeded to rescue the briefly unconscious Mo Qi.
At this moment, someone quickly ran up to the car window, calling Mo Xin’s name anxiously.
Mo Xin’s heart warmed, and he shouted loudly, “I’m here! I’m fine!”
Immediately after, Liang Qiuchi’s anxious face appeared in front of him.
“Are you really okay?” Liang Qiuchi knelt on one knee, leaned in, and wiped the bloodstains from Mo Xin’s face with his hand. “Wait here, I’ll get you out!”
Saying that, Liang Qiuchi took off his jacket, wrapped it around his hand, and cleared the remaining glass shards on the car window to prevent Mo Xin from being injured again when he climbed out of the car.
Mo Xin got out of the car first, and Liang Qiuchi and Vincent pulled the unconscious Mo Qi out of the car. After a quick check revealed no serious external injuries, Liang Qiuchi said, “Let’s leave here first and follow me.”
He carried Mo Qi on his back, and with Mo Xin and Vincent, quickly turned into an alley. After passing through a residential area, they successfully met up with Wu Yahui who was waiting for them.
“Let’s go back to our place first,” Liang Qiuchi said. “Both of your homes should be unsafe now.”
Mo Xin nodded, and together with Liang Qiuchi, helped Mo Qi onto the back seat. On the way back, he breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that Mo Qi should only be temporarily stunned by the close-range shockwave.
“Why did you come?” Mo Xin asked Liang Qiuchi. “You’ll be in trouble if someone sees you.”
“I had something to do and I was worried about you. I was originally planning to go outside the hospital to see if there was a chance to meet you, but I happened to encounter the explosion.” Liang Qiuchi beckoned to him. “Come here.”
Mo Xin obediently leaned over.
A piece of glass shard had cut his right cheek, the wound wasn’t deep, but the blood flow was alarming.
Liang Qiuchi held his face with one hand and meticulously wiped away the blood with the other.
Mo Xin could feel his scorching hot fingers trembling slightly. He comfortingly rubbed Liang Qiuchi’s palm with his cheek. “Qiuchi, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
Liang Qiuchi’s Adam’s apple rolled lightly as he recalled the rush to the scene just now, seeing the overturned off-road vehicle, and the almost uncontrollable urge to go mad. There was an uneasy feeling pounding beneath his chest like a drum.
He suddenly leaned in and kissed Mo Xin’s lips passionately, fervently stealing his breath. Mo Xin gently responded to Liang Qiuchi’s lips and tongue, trying to soothe his emotions.
The two of them kissed passionately, sitting in the passenger’s seat, Vincent blushing and feeling awkward, like sitting on pins and needles, while Wu Yahui, who was driving, chuckled and playfully tapped his head.
“Have you two kissed enough? Can you please consider the feelings of the injured?” Mo Qi, sandwiched in the middle of the back seat, suddenly spoke softly. Wu Yahui couldn’t help but burst into laughter at his somewhat inappropriate timing.
Liang Qiuchi released Mo Xin, and Mo Xin, still feeling a bit reluctant, pecked Liang Qiuchi’s lips a few more times before turning to look at his elder brother beside him. “Are you awake? Do you have a headache?”
“It wasn’t too bad at first,” Mo Qi glanced around, seeing Liang Qiuchi smiling calmly at him, he could only sigh and close his eyes again. “I’ll rest a bit longer.”
“Then you might not be able to sleep.”
Wu Yahui took out her phone and handed it to Vincent next to her, asking him to open the video app, and the headline news caught their attention. She said, “You guys have been busy at the hospital these past few days, with your father, while that old guy Reinis has been busy appearing on TV and grabbing headlines.”
Vincent frowned more and more as he watched, then handed the phone to Mo Xin in the back seat.
It was a current affairs commentary program, and Reinis was discussing the recent assassination attempt on Mo Zhenhong.
Liang Qiuchi said, “The identity of the assailant is no longer a secret. Now Reinis is bent on making the public believe that Wancha was sent by the Lugo side to assassinate your father.”
“Is that true?” Mo Qi suddenly opened his eyes, looking sharply at Liang Qiuchi.
“I guarantee it with my integrity, it’s not true,” Liang Qiuchi said candidly, meeting his gaze. “I have confirmed with Pei Ji that the Lugo side never had any assassination plans.”
“Alright, I believe you.” Mo Qi looked at Reinis, who was commenting on the phone with narrowed eyes. “The explosion just now was directed at me, it seems that this guy’s target has been completely eliminated.”
If he hadn’t changed to Mo Xin’s car when leaving the hospital, he would have been blown to pieces long ago.
“So how does he plan to deal with me?” Mo Xin asked in a deep voice.
The car fell silent for a moment, with only Reinis on the phone still chatting with the host energetically.
The host asked Reinis how he viewed the nature of this sudden event. Reinis sat upright, his voice solemn: “I believe this is a typical vicious political retaliation, which also warns us that plotting against others often leads to self-destruction.”
Then Reinis showed the records of Mo Xin’s joint training with Liang Qiuchi during their time at the Federal Military Academy, and even the award-winning group photo of them standing together on the podium. The host cooperated with a surprised expression, allowing Reinis to continue digging deeper into the relationship between Mo Xin and Liang Qiuchi.
Mo Qi understood everything that was about to happen next.
“It seems he intends to use emotions as a weapon to kill you.”
Sure enough, Reinis was insinuating both implicitly and explicitly that Mo Xin and Liang Qiuchi were intimate, but since he couldn’t produce any substantial evidence, he could only make some speculative remarks. In the end, he even played the card of Godwin Reinis.
It turned out that before Godwin disappeared, he had a bad feeling and had already told his uncle about his suspicions regarding Mo Xin and Liang Qiuchi.
Currently, Godwin Reinis had been missing for almost a month. Old Reinis boldly declared on this widely watched program that he suspected Godwin’s disappearance was related to Mo Xin and Liang Qiuchi.
“It looks like he’s going to be the president. He can say whatever he wants.” Mo Qi reached out to turn off the phone and asked Liang Qiuchi, “Doesn’t it feel like we’re back to eight years ago?”
Liang Qiuchi nodded. “His routine of slinging mud is becoming more proficient.”
Reinis first implied collusion between the Mo family and Liang Qiuchi, then used Wancha’s identity as a Lugo member to falsely accuse the Lugo faction of retaliating against Mo Zhenghong’s assassination due to a failed cooperation. After this series of operations, Reinis managed to clear himself of suspicion entirely.
All that remained was to manipulate public opinion. Before long, Mo Zhenghong would go from being a victim to a suspect of treason.
“What should we do?” Vincent looked at Mo Xin with concern. “General, should you temporarily lay low?”
“Lay low for what?” Mo Qi said. “Reinis’s speech is at most a routine mudslinging operation between political rivals. Without substantive evidence, it can’t reach the level of judicial accusation. Going into hiding now will only make you look guilty.”
Mo Xin agreed. He couldn’t retreat at this time.
But as for what to do next, he couldn’t decide for the moment.
An oppressive silence filled the car. Everyone was contemplating and analyzing the current situation, but no matter how they analyzed it, they were faced with a foregone conclusion.
Even if Liang Qiuchi were to come forward now and accuse Reinis of his numerous crimes, it would hardly change the outcome of Reinis winning the presidential election in just five days.
When the car entered “Paradise,” Liang Qiuchi broke the heavy silence. “The breakthrough in this matter lies with Wancha.”
Mo Xin and Mo Qi looked at him together.
Liang Qiuchi met Mo Xin’s gaze. “I must see him.”
