Chapter 51: Martina Can See Two Colors Too

As they walked, Junice kept asking questions about chantless magic.

She fired one question after another at Reiner like a machine-gun.

After knowing her for so long, this was the first time Reiner had seen her so fascinated by something.

“Reiner, you must be a genius, I’m really jealous of your talent,” Junice said in open admiration, “You’re the first mage able to cast spells without chanting; even my instructor can’t do that.”

“That’s exaggerating… I only did it because I wanted to slack off; if I could figure out something this simple, surely someone else could too.”

Junice shook her head and declared, “I have honestly never heard of anyone casting without chanting, I even made up the phrase myself, and although I had similar ideas when I first learned magic, I gave up very quickly.”

“Reiner, you will definitely go down in history as a great mage.”

Hearing that, Reiner narrowed his eyes involuntarily.

Go down in history… just like that?

He wondered whether Junice was exaggerating or the mages of this world were simply that mediocre.

No one had managed to work out something so simple.

“I feel like anyone could have thought of this.”

“People can think of it, but not everyone can make it work,” Junice said with a shrug, then closed her eyes and sighed, “Reiner, you’re a genius, so you have no concept of the magical aptitude of Common folk.

Some people may study for years before they can cast the most basic Fireball, whereas you just glanced at the spell twice, memorized the incantation, and threw it out effortlessly; calling your talent one in a million actually belittles you.”

“Listen to you…”

“If you don’t believe me, try teaching Nora and Martina; they should represent the average level of Common folk.”

Reiner thought back for a moment.

Their Spirit talent ratings were D and C respectively, which really did look ordinary.

“By that logic, you should be gifted too, right? After all, I only explained it briefly yesterday and you pulled it off.”

Junice pressed her forehead, looking a little hurt. “My instructor says I’m a once-in-a-century prodigy, but next to you I feel like an idiot…”

“Yesterday I merely shortened one word; compared with you, that’s not even the same level of difficulty.”

Reiner was speechless.

It seemed that mages in this world really were only good for support roles.

This once-in-a-century genius Junice felt only slightly stronger than a Common adventurer in actual combat…

While they talked, the group had already reached the familiar practice meadow.

“I’ll practice first; if there’s anything you don’t understand, ask me.”

Junice raised her staff and went on practicing chantless casting.

Reiner turned to the two cat-eared girls.

He suddenly felt like teaching them magic; after all, more skills never hurt.

A Fireball could serve for lighting or starting a fire, incredibly handy.

Just as he was grinning to himself, the inner voices of the two beast-eared girls drifted into his mind.

Nora: (What does he want this time? Out here in the wilds, I’m not doing that kind of thing…)

Martina: (Now that he’s done with Nora he’s eyeing me? Forget it, I’m the woman he can’t have!)

Seriously…

Reiner turned back to Junice and asked, “How do I test their attributes and mana crystal capacity?”

Junice answered in between spells, “It’s easy. Have them focus their Spirit and close their eyes, then you inject any natural element into them. Need my help?”

“I’ll try it myself. You keep practicing.”

Reiner patted the grass and motioned for the two to sit.

Nora obediently complied, while Martina asked curiously, “What’s this about? We don’t get free time today?”

“Correct. From today on, you two are going to study with me.”

Martina complained loudly, “I want to play!”

“You’re 19 already; it’s time you learned something useful. Be good, I won’t hurt you.” Reiner sighed.

He had never expected that, after transmigrating, he would get to play the preacher.

But the two of them really knew almost nothing.

If they wanted to blend into human society, learning the language was the first priority.

On top of language lessons, he also planned to teach them basic arithmetic.

Before that, though, he needed to test their magical attributes…

“Nora, you first. Close your eyes, focus your Spirit, then tell me what you see.”

(Can you see anything with your eyes closed? Should I open one and close the other?)

Reiner added, “Keep both eyes shut. You’re not actually looking; you have to feel it with your mind…”

“Oh, oh.”

Nora took a deep breath and slowly closed her eyes.

Reiner took her hand, imitating what Junice had done, and poured magic into her little by little to stimulate her.

“Well? What do you see?”

“Uh… pitch-black, nothing at all.” After saying that, Nora suddenly squirmed and then burst out laughing.

That brat Martina was poking her ticklish spots with a stick.

“Keep it up and you’ll go without lunch.”

“Hmph, threatening me with food… Reiner, you’re shameless.” Martina turned her head away, apparently offended.

Nora’s attribute test continued.

All of a sudden she cried, “Wah!”

“What? You see something?”

“Mm… Master, I see a white crystal.”

That should be Nora’s mana crystal.

Reiner asked expectantly, “About how big is the crystal?”

“Doesn’t feel very big, maybe the size of a watermelon.”

???

Reiner felt a stab of disappointment, but he reminded himself that Nora was a scout; even if she learned magic it would mostly be for support, so it wasn’t a big deal.

“Hey, the crystal’s changing color. Looks like red mist is pouring in.”

Fire element.

As expected of the most common attribute.

“Any other colors?”

Nora shook her head.

“You can learn fire magic. Martina, your turn.”

“Okay, okay.” Martina also held out her hand.

She closed her eyes the way Nora did, but her mind was buzzing and wouldn’t settle down.

(Reiner’s hand is actually bigger than mine, but there isn’t a single callus; he definitely hasn’t done much hard labor.)

“Stop daydreaming and calm down.”

“I’m not daydreaming.” Her contrarian streak flared up.

But soon her mind did quiet down.

A moment later she shouted, “I see it!”

“You scared me… don’t jump like that.” Reiner sighed, then asked, “How big is the crystal?”

“As tall as a tree. Am I better than Nora?” Martina grinned proudly.

“What color mist do you see?”

Martina shook her head. “Purple. I don’t like it.”

“That’s the lightning element. You can use lightning-attribute magic. Junice says it’s rare.”

Just as Reiner was about to let go of her hand, Martina spoke again, “Eh, there’s green mist too…”
