Chapter 67: A Duel with Martina
Nora’s Endurance was not good.
Yesterday, she had no trouble staying invisible at first, but not long after she became visible again.
On the way to the Adventurers’ Guild, Reiner clearly felt that more and more people were greeting him.
Their form of address gradually shifted from “Mr. Reiner” to “Lord Reiner.”
Reiner felt somewhat flattered and overwhelmed.
When he arrived at the Adventurers’ Guild, even more people greeted him in the same way.
Junice was still leisurely sitting in the corner stroking a cat.
When she saw Reiner approaching, she set the cat down and leaned on the table with a bright smile, saying, “Reiner, your fame just keeps growing, and I’m really envious of your talent.”
“Cut the flattery; let’s go out to study together.”
She said “Mm-hmm,” and after everyone met up, they headed out of the city again to continue their training.
As soon as they arrived at the location, Martina impatiently poked Reiner.
“What are you doing?”
Martina pointed at the nearby woods and said seriously, “A duel, did you forget our agreement? I can’t wait to let you experience being my slave.”
“Are you serious?” Reiner asked with a raised eyebrow. “If you lose, I’ll have you turned into some kind of sweet dessert.”
“Sweet dessert? What kind of dessert is that?” Martina furrowed her brow and began to think carefully.
After a moment, she lifted her head and said dismissively, “It doesn’t matter; I accept the bet and won’t back out.”
Junice sat to one side watching them with interest and said, “Are you two serious? Be careful not to get hurt.”
Martina shrugged dismissively and then took off her helmet, followed by her plate armor.
“Reiner, no staves and no armor; we’ll fight with bare hands,” Martina said as she bent over and removed her greaves.
In a pure strength comparison, Reiner was definitely no match for her.
His technique was most likely inferior to Martina’s as well.
“Can I use magic?”
Martina nodded and said, “Of course; otherwise, with your scrawny arms and legs, how could you possibly beat me?”
A slight smirk curved Reiner’s lips, since he was practically guaranteed to win.
Although Martina was indeed fierce, she was after all a carbon-based lifeform and far inferior in magical power.
Reiner also began removing his armor.
Junice laughed twice, saying, “Nora and I will watch from the sidelines,” before shifting over to sit next to Nora and teasingly tickling her ear.
The two of them, fully prepared, slipped into the nearby woods.
Martina raised her fist in a show of force and said, “I won’t go easy on you, Reiner, so give it your all too.”
Seeing that sandbag-sized fist, Reiner couldn’t help recalling Martina’s usual combat prowess, and he let out a long sigh of relief.
If Martina truly didn’t hold back, one punch from her would probably force him to concede.
Thinking this, he took a few more steps back.
The farther the distance, the more it favored Reiner.
In the complex terrain of the forest, without his staff to channel it and without charging, his Fireball and Water Ball spells were of very limited power.
And with her sturdy build, taking a direct hit would likely do her little harm.
Martina watched this move and laughed triumphantly, “What? Are you scared? Don’t worry, I’m only going to make you a slave for a few days; I wouldn’t bully you.”
Reiner was momentarily speechless, and after a few seconds of silence he said, “I think you’ve gotten a bit too cocky; I’m ready, come on.”
Martina instantly wore a fierce expression, her eyes locked on Reiner.
She was getting serious.
Reiner raised an eyebrow and said, “Come on then, just glaring at me won’t kill me, you know?”
Seeing that she still did not react, Reiner took the initiative and fired a Water Ball.
Martina swiftly dodged to the side, but her speed was insufficient and the Water Ball struck her right shoulder.
Yet she only flinched slightly and suffered no real harm.
“Reiner, holding back is an insult to me; if that’s the case, I won’t duel you… it’d be no fun.”
“All right, I won’t hold back.” Reiner raised both hands and unleashed several Water Balls toward Martina.
Each strike could easily snap a tree trunk.
Martina used the trees as cover, darting through the forest and gradually closing in on Reiner.
Along the way, she was knocked down twice by Water Balls, but she quickly rolled back behind a tree and then charged out in the opposite direction.
Seeing the distance between them closing, Reiner charged up a large Water Ball and fired it directly at Martina, but it was blocked by a pine tree, sending water splashing everywhere.
“Your aim isn’t very good, huh?”
Reiner smiled without a word and continued to cast Water Orbs to pressure Martina behind the trees.
Soon the surrounding soil was soaked with water.
Martina suddenly burst out from behind a tree and roared as she charged toward him.
Reiner decisively began to chant a spell, and the next second a glob of wet mud splattered across his face.
But relying on his chantless casting ability, he anticipated her using Earthquake right in front of him.
The next second, Martina stepped into the mud pit and sank directly in.
The more she struggled, the deeper she sank.
Reiner spat the mud from his mouth and couldn’t help scolding, “You’re such a dog… who taught you to throw mud in someone else’s face?”
“You’re the dog here!”
Seeing Martina trapped, Reiner was about to step forward and tease her when he saw her quickly raise her hand.
A stone whizzed past and grazed Reiner’s forehead as it crashed into a tree trunk.
“You dirty thing, playing dirty? If I hadn’t reacted, I’d be flat on the ground,” Reiner said as he picked up a long branch and poked her forehead, “Do you admit defeat?”
Martina lost her composure and struggled in the mud while yelling, grabbing a clump of mud and flinging it directly at Reiner’s face.
Reiner did not back down either; he stepped back two paces and sprayed a small jet of water at her face.
Martina shouted, “You… you’re going too far! You win and you still humiliate me! Just wait until I get out of here, and I’ll show you!”
Reiner said solemnly, “You were the one who threw mud at me in the pit first.”
Martina bit her lip; the fierce look she had just worn gradually turned into one of grievance, and finally she burst into tears.
“Crying?” Reiner squatted down in front of her and leaned in to look, “You’re really crying?”
Unbeknownst to her, Junice had walked over to Reiner’s side and whispered reproachfully, “When you spar, is your goal to kill the other person? It’s really terrifying; if you hadn’t dodged that stone just now, it might have split your skull.”
Seeing Martina sinking deeper, Reiner decisively cast Breath of the Red Dragon and reached out his hand to her.
The three of them combined their efforts to pull her out of the mud pit.
“Stop crying; I won’t tease you anymore from now on.”
She wiped her tears and became aggrieved again, “You still say…”
“Enough, don’t cry anymore, is it really necessary?” Reiner said as he rinsed the mud off her.
Hearing that, Martina’s tears welled up again.
Her grievances seemed to burrow into Reiner’s ear one by one.
(You’re bullying me…)
All that commotion ruined Reiner’s study plans, so to prevent her from catching a cold, he took Martina back to his home…
