Chapter 80: The Elf Girl Shows Her Strength
Seeing Elyanna trailing far behind and refusing to leave, Reiner let out a long sigh, halted his horse on the spot, and waited for the elf loli to catch up.
When she reached him, Reiner stretched out his hand and yanked her onto the saddle in one motion.
The two beast-eared girls watched the scene, and their inner voices drifted into Reiner’s ears at once.
Nora: (It seems… Master is getting another woman; if possible, I wish there were a few less…)
Martina: (She looks like a kid; Reiner would never fancy such an ordinary girl, she needs to be at least as big as Nora.)
Reiner turned and looked at the two beast-eared girls.
He had to admit that, although Martina was not especially clever, her taste was distinctive.
Reiner had always preferred women who looked more mature.
A loli like Elyanna usually did nothing for him.
Noticing Reiner spacing out, Elyanna’s pointed ears twitched, and she asked in a lively, adorable voice, “Will you take me with you?”
He had had little contact with this world’s elves, so he might as well start with Elyanna as a point of entry.
“First, I need to know whether you told your parents or any friends and relatives about your plan to go adventuring.”
Elyanna nodded vigorously. “Of course, I only left to train after getting permission.”
Reiner stared straight into her eyes.
As expected, within seconds her gaze began to dodge guiltily.
“Get off; I don’t want to provoke you elves.”
Elyanna suddenly lunged at Reiner, wrapped both arms around his waist, and cried, “No, take me adventuring!”
Reiner hurriedly pried her hands off. “Hey, are we that close? Why are you hugging me?”
Nora’s thoughts drifted over. (Sigh, if only Master were less charming; wherever he goes he attracts women.)
Elyanna clung even tighter. “If you don’t agree, I won’t let go!”
Playing that game? Reiner called for backup at once.
“Martina.”
As soon as he spoke, a strong hand yanked Elyanna off Reiner.
Martina lifted Elyanna like a chick and set her behind her.
Elyanna looked at the pair with grievance and pouted her cherry-red lips.
Reiner went on to ask, “Why must you follow me?”
“My sister says the outside world is vast and fun, so I want to look around and broaden my horizons; I don’t want to stay in this shabby forest forever,” Elyanna muttered softly.
So she was a runaway good girl.
Reiner saw a shadow of Junice in her.
Yet Junice had left out of helplessness, whereas Elyanna leaned more toward play.
“If I take you along, what can you do for me?”
At that question, Elyanna perked right up.
Sitting behind Martina, she waved her staff lightly. “I can enchant your weapons and armor; it’s powerful and very useful.”
Reiner’s eyes lit up, and his interest spiked at once.
“Could you give me a simple demonstration?”
“Sure!” Elyanna reached for the greatsword on Martina’s back, only to be glared at.
Elyanna instantly drew her hand back like a child caught misbehaving.
Martina had said before that she disliked elves.
Reiner told the others, “Let’s rest here for a bit and continue on this afternoon.”
He then dismounted and set Elyanna on the ground as well.
While everyone sat in a circle eating, Reiner handed Martina’s greatsword to her. “Show me what you can do.”
Noticing Martina craning her neck to watch, Reiner added, “Be careful; this sword is her lifeline… if you damage it, she will definitely get mad.”
Elyanna nodded.
She dragged the greatsword with effort, placed it on the snow, then pressed her hands together and slowly closed her eyes.
Soon a melodious song flowed from her lips, yet the greatsword on the snow showed no change.
Junice walked over and whispered, “Is she singing?”
Reiner nodded. “I’m not sure either; it should be some kind of enchantment ritual.”
After several dozen seconds, the polished blade suddenly emitted a holy glow under the refracted sunlight.
During the ruin raid against the necromancer, Reiner had seen similar light on the knights’ armor.
Yet the glow from the weapon enchanted by Elyanna was clearly more dazzling.
Elyanna’s eyes shone with confidence as she said, “All right, give it a try.”
Reiner picked up the sword and swung it hard through the air.
Feeling no change in weight, he examined the edge closely and finally noticed something.
Because Martina used the greatsword intensively, several obvious nicks marred the sharp edge, but after Elyanna’s enchantment those chips had smoothed out a bit.
“So you can only repair our gear?” Reiner asked with a raised brow.
This enchantment was not quite what he had imagined.
Elyanna put her hands on her hips and said seriously, “Try casting magic at it and see what happens.”
Reiner turned and shouted, “Martina, be the target.”
Martina ran over at once, took back her greatsword, and began to swing it.
“Just hold it still; I’ll hit the sword with a Water Orb.”
“Got it.”
Reiner raised his staff and fired a Water Ball.
The Water Ball that should have struck the target veered off under an invisible force and smashed into a nearby pine.
Reiner had seen this effect before on the goblin priest and the necromancer.
Each time an attack deflected, a bone charm on the goblin priest shattered, and as for the necromancer, he had not seen clearly whether any condition was triggered because the distance was too great.
“If you enchant armor, does that mean the wearer can nullify magic damage?” Reiner’s eyes sparkled.
He now saw Elyanna’s value.
For a warrior like Martina, armor protected her from physical damage, yet magical attacks from monsters still threatened her easily.
When they fled before, the necromancer had scorched half of Martina’s body.
Reiner changed his mind.
“How long can this effect last?”
“The enchantment can block several magic attacks depending on how long I spend on it; if no magic hits it will dissipate over 15 days,” Elyanna’s pointed ears twitched as she said smugly, “With me along, you get unlimited free equipment enchantments!”
“Well, interested yet?”
