Chapter 87: The Lord of Cannon
“Will she be all right?” Reiner sat on the ground holding Junice and looked at her pale face with mild concern.
The local female medic of Cannon smeared emerald green herbs on Junice’s injured arm and then said, “Orcs dip their arrowheads in poison; if you ignore it the toxin takes effect quickly, but with this salve and a few days’ rest she will be fine.
“For the past few years orcs have raided our town constantly, so I have plenty of experience treating this sort of injury.”
The medic picked up her wooden box, walked aside, and began bandaging the other soldiers’ wounds.
Seeing this, Reiner joined the treatment group as well.
His Heal Water was far more efficient than the medic’s methods, prompting her to praise him nonstop at the side: “You’re so fast; you can heal a soldier in no time and don’t even need stitches.”
“Doesn’t this city have any mages?”
The medic shook her head and kept her eyes on the bandage she was wrapping as she replied, “Mages? In a little backwater like ours we don’t have any mages.”
Daisy and Elyanna also made their way back.
No one knew where they had been hiding, but they were covered in dust and dirt.
Elyanna sat down next to Junice and then simply collapsed onto her.
“Are you all right?” Reiner walked over and asked her.
“I’m okay… I just burned through too much mana; if I’m still asleep tonight, don’t forget to have Aunt Daisy feed me…”
Elyanna curled into a ball and slowly closed her eyes.
“Martina, you and Daisy take those two back; it’s too cold out here.”
“All right.” Martina slung one of them over each shoulder and walked toward the house while Daisy followed at a distance behind her.
Just as Reiner was about to resume treating the soldiers, a squad of half-armored cavalry carrying giant axes came down the main street from the city center toward the gate.
Blood stained their armor, clear proof they had also been in combat.
Leading them was a burly man with a red beard, draped in a bearskin coat and wearing a helmet unlike the other soldiers’ iron helms.
His eyes met Reiner’s.
Reiner lowered his head deliberately and called out, “My lord.”
He was most likely a Barnite noble.
The rough giant asked, “Was that explosion over there your doing?”
Although Reiner wanted to correct him, he swallowed it back and said, “Yes, I saw their banner waving over there and fired a Fireball.”
“Its power was astonishing; I think you must have taken out the orc chieftain or their priest, otherwise they wouldn’t have retreated so quickly.”
Reiner thought that was unlikely.
Either of those units was at least a minor boss; it was impossible to kill one that casually.
“Perhaps…”
The rough man sized him up from head to toe and then asked, “You’re new here, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I’m an adventurer traveling from place to place.”
“What’s your name?”
“Reiner, and you, my lord?”
“Aidan Mac Campbell, master of this city; you just helped us a great deal, and without you our losses would have been far worse.”
Aidan lifted his chin, and a mounted attendant immediately handed Reiner a pouch of coins.
Then the group turned and left.
Reiner passed the purse to Nora beside him and continued tending to the wounded soldiers lying on the ground.
He did not finish until the afternoon.
At last he had time to open the pouch and look inside.
It contained nothing but Barnite gold coins, roughly 30 in all.
Reiner’s weariness vanished in an instant.
Lords really were loaded.
He slipped an arm around the waists of the two beast-eared girls and said, “Let’s hit the tavern and see what’s good; we’re eating well today.”
Martina said boldly, “Darling, tonight I want white bread and you.”
The white bread sold in Cannon was not as tasty as the loaves in Melod, but it was huge and made with sturdy ingredients, which Martina loved.
Reiner poked Nora in the side and asked, “What about you? What do you want to eat?”
She was always like this; even if she wanted something she would not speak unless Reiner asked her directly.
Nora whispered, “As long as it’s meat, I like it…”
After buying their food, the three carried a mountain of bags back home, and Daisy, who was cleaning, hurriedly turned to greet them: “You’ve worked hard.”
Reiner handed over the things he was carrying.
At that moment, the door to Junice’s room opened.
Her face was completely bloodless, and she still looked exhausted.
“Awake?”
Supporting herself against the wall, Junice wobbled as she walked and said, “Mm… but my head is still spinning; I feel awful.”
Reiner steadied her casually and said, “It’s fine; rest a bit longer. The medic here said the arrows were poisoned, so you’ll need to stay in bed for a while.”
Martina caught the scene and her eyes showed a hint of jealousy.
Right after that, her inner voice drifted over: (He still has the energy to flirt? Nora is useless; today I’ll show him!)
She stripped off her armor, grabbed some clothes, and slipped into the small cubicle.
Junice waved her hand, “Forget it; I’ll go lie down again.”
“Go ahead.”
After seeing her off, Reiner went upstairs himself.
The moment he closed the door, the system’s voice sounded again.
[Quest: Assist the locals and repel an orc clan raid.
Reward: 20 Barnite gold coins.]
Current status: Completed
Reward delivered.]
Twenty gold coins appeared out of thin air on the bed, and Reiner pocketed every one of them.
He shook the purse lightly, listening to the crisp clink inside, and felt exceptionally satisfied.
With this money they could enjoy a delightful winter.
Immediately afterward, the system voice sounded again.
[Quest update: Slay a Minotaur chieftain
Reward: an ancient lightning magic book]
Minotaur hunter, engage!
The lightning magic book was finally here.
Once he got his hands on it, he would be a mage who knew at least a little of every element.
Even so, he still felt far too weak…
Tomorrow, once Elyanna woke up, he would definitely ask that elf to teach him magic.
Night fell.
The door creaked open quietly.
Martina sneaked behind it, peeking at Reiner.
“Get in here and sleep; it’s freezing out there.”
Martina giggled and slipped into the room.
She wore only a rough linen shirt, and her face was red from the cold.
“It’s freezing and you’re wearing so little; what if you get sick?”
“It’s more convenient this way.” After fidgeting a bit, she began to act spoiled toward Reiner. “Darling! I’m really, really tired today; could you rub my shoulders?
I told you yesterday I wouldn’t let you off easily tonight.”
“We’ll see who lets whom off.” Reiner smiled faintly.
No matter how tough she was, she was still no match for him.
Martina’s little face fell, and she said with some tsundere pride, “You’re my man, so you should be stronger than me, and it’s not like you’re that much stronger anyway…”
“Enough talk… single combat!”
Reiner blew out the candle beside the bed.
