Chapter 90: The Lord’s Younger Brother

Reiner went to a clearing outside the city and sparred with Junice using the spell he had just learned.

The spell’s defensive power was nothing short of incredible.

Whenever Junice’s Fireball struck the barrier it detonated instantly, yet Reiner, hiding behind it, remained unscathed.

The move was not without flaws, however: it drained mana too quickly, and after using it only twice the light elements inside Reiner were completely depleted.

Yet, according to Elyanna, light elements were everywhere during the day, so as long as he quietly absorbed them for a while he could cast the spell again.

“Martina, come slash me like a brother would.”

“Are you sure?” Martina narrowed her eyes at Reiner, seeming reluctant.

(Good grief, he may be a flirt, but I can’t just cut him down… fine, fine.)

Reiner glanced at Elyanna beside him and asked for confirmation.

“Well… it blocks whatever the caster wants, but the actual strength depends on your mana amount; if you get hurt don’t blame me, her strength is huge and I can’t guarantee anything…”

Reiner hesitated for a moment, then was suddenly seized by a strange confidence, patted his chest and said, “Go ahead, I can block it.”

Martina stopped holding back and drew the greatsword from her back.

She quickly took her stance, wrapped all 5 fingers around the hilt, and her arm muscles bulged.

With a battle cry the sharp greatsword came crashing down.

Reiner felt as if he had seen his great-grandmother and hurriedly stepped back.

He clearly saw the blade of Martina’s sword slice open the barrier.

If he hadn’t taken that step back she would really have murdered her future husband.

“Martina, you idiot! Don’t you know how to hold back at all?” Nora ran over angrily and thumped her on the head twice.

Holding her head, Martina replied innocently, “Reiner told me to cut him… when we spar with others we don’t pull our punches…”

“Dummy!”

Reiner let out a long breath.

Sure enough, Martina’s strength was overwhelming, and Elyanna had even enchanted the greatsword, so he couldn’t treat her like a normal test target.

Junice walked over as well and said, “Just be more careful next time.”

Hands on his hips, Reiner turned to Nora, “Then you try.”

“Yes.”

Nora took out a dagger and first tapped the barrier, then, seeing that her current strength could not pierce it, she gradually applied more force.

After several stabs, she gathered her strength and thrust the dagger forward with a sudden burst.

When the shield still did not budge she said, “I can’t pierce it with my current strength.”

The mithril dagger was exceptionally sharp, and Nora’s strength was about the same as an ordinary person’s.

If even her full-power strike could not penetrate it, the barrier could indeed block the vast majority of physical attacks.

Overjoyed, Reiner hugged Nora and kissed her, then hugged Martina and kissed her, and instinctively reached for Junice next.

Fortunately he stopped in time.

Junice narrowed her eyes, a meaningful smile on her face, and deliberately spoke in the demi-human tongue: “Reiner, are you still not satisfied?”

The moment she said that, Martina’s eyes widened.

At the same time, he heard the inner voices of the two beast-eared girls.

Nora: (I expected this long ago… he’s just that outstanding, nothing we can do.)

Martina: (A savage woman stole him away!)

Reiner muttered under his breath, “It was just reflex.”

Junice chuckled softly, patted Reiner on the shoulder and said, “I already kissed you this morning… only on the cheek, but for now that should be enough, right?”

Reiner nodded, then looked at Elyanna nearby.

Startled, she backed away a few steps, “I don’t want to! You guys kiss each other… I don’t want to.”

“Who said I was going to kiss you? I’m just curious… what have you been staring at so intently since a moment ago?” Reiner asked earnestly.

“I simply feel that you are not human.”

He knew she meant no harm, yet it still sounded like an insult.

Unable to resist, Reiner retorted, “You’re the one who’s not human.”

Elyanna nodded and answered earnestly, “Indeed I’m not human; I’m an elf. I have never heard of a human using our elven light magic; this goes far beyond merely being rare. If I told my mother or sister, they too would be shocked.”

“Then please help me keep it secret; I don’t want too many people to know.”

“All right, Reiner.”

“So, Elf, can you tell me the name of this light spell?”

After thinking for a moment Elyanna replied, “Radiant Barrier; it’s the defensive spell we elves use most often, and I’ve known it since childhood.”

Reiner silently committed the name to memory.

Although the spell consumed mana, its defensive power was excellent.

Once he mastered it later, he could drop the chant altogether and probably cast it instantaneously.

As for the mana cost, to Reiner it was hardly a problem at all.

He simply needed to absorb more light elements during the day.

Just then, out of the corner of his eye, Reiner saw a squad of warriors leaving Cannon and heading toward them.

Leading them was a red-haired man wearing a horned helm.

He carried a heavy double-bladed axe in his hands and looked rather intimidating.

When he reached Reiner he shouted, “You’re Reiner, right?”

The moment he opened his mouth a strong onion smell filled the air.

“I’m Reiner, and you are?”

“Connor Mac Campbell! You met my big brother yesterday, and I witnessed your bravery with my own eyes.”

So this was the lord’s younger brother.

Reiner looked at the dozen warriors behind him and asked, “My lord, what can I do for you?”

“We located the orc village! They must pay for what they did yesterday… I lost dozens of brothers!”

Connor pointed at the warriors behind him and shouted, “These are Cannon’s strongest fighters. But even with their support I still need your help! There had been at least 300 orcs in yesterday’s attack on the town.”

With only this dozen men, wasn’t it a suicide mission?

Reiner shook his head, “My lord, we are too few; we might lose more than we gain.”

“That’s exactly why I need you… hit their village with a powerful spell and then we run! Hahaha!”

Reiner fell into deep thought.

To be honest he was not short on money; with nearly 60 gold coins and his current living expenses, that was enough for a whole family to live for 1 or 2 years without buying gear.

Yet if he wanted to develop here long-term he would definitely need the nobles’ support.

He might as well do them a favor and expand his network…
