Chapter 28: Zhang Daya Causes a Scene at the Military Family Compound

“Sis, there are two people outside who say they’re your parents,” a young soldier said with a naive look to He Yashu.

He Yashu was stunned, thinking it was her in-laws. Holding Xiao Zhongling’s hand, she walked outside.

“Mama, is it Grandpa and Grandma?” Xiao Zhongling asked excitedly. She really missed them.

“It should be,” He Yashu smiled.

“Yay! I hope my big brothers came too—I miss them so much!” Xiao Zhongling said, stomping her little legs as she ran ahead.

“Lingling, Lingling, it’s Grandpa!” Zhang Fugui’s sharp eyes recognized her. At first, he couldn’t be sure—she used to be thin and small, but now she was chubby and fair.

“Mama, the bad people are here!” Xiao Zhongling shouted when she saw Zhang Fugui and Zhang Daya.

He Yashu’s face turned cold as she saw the two elderly people at the door.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, disgusted by their greedy expressions.

“Daughter, you have to save Tie Niu. He’s been locked up!” Zhang Daya said angrily, looking at He Yashu with hopeful eyes.

Their shouting attracted the attention of many army wives nearby.

“This is your problem—why are you coming to me? We severed ties long ago,” He Yashu said coldly. She turned to the soldier and told him not to notify her if they showed up again. The soldier, realizing the misunderstanding, promised it wouldn’t happen again.

“You heartless girl! Your father and I raised you, and now that you’re married, you cut us off? You’re so ungrateful! If I’d known it’d be like this, I’d never have raised you!” Zhang Daya yelled, pointing at He Yashu’s nose.

“Ma’am, if it’s about such matters, you should speak to the unit leader. Captain Zhong’s wife is registered with the military, after all,” said the wife of Captain Wu, who previously tried to stir trouble for He Yashu and now jumped at the chance to see drama.

“Daughter, your dad never asked anything from you. Just help us this once, okay?” Zhang Fugui said kindly, knowing the crowd would sympathize with the weak.

Some of the military wives began whispering and pointing at He Yashu.

“Some people spend money extravagantly and treat their own parents coldly even when they’re begging her. Really eye-opening. Sir, don’t waste your breath. With her attitude, she’s not helping you. Go report to the leadership—maybe they’ll help,” said Captain Wu’s wife sarcastically.

“Wouldn’t that cause problems for her? I want my daughter to be okay,” Zhang Fugui said, pretending to wipe tears.

“Want me to take you to the leaders?” He Yashu said coolly, tired of the act.

“You ungrateful brat! Everything we do is for your own good. How can you say such things?” Zhang Daya burst out, unable to stand He Yashu’s indifference.

“Yashu, are those your foster parents?” Zhao Han asked, hurrying over after hearing about the scene. She was furious at what she heard.

“Aunt Zhao, they want to speak to the leadership about my situation. I wonder if Commander He has time?” He Yashu said sweetly.

Some army wives, seeing He Yashu’s calm demeanor, began to doubt their earlier judgment. She didn’t seem guilty at all—her composure was admirable.

“Yes, we’re going to report her. How can someone like her be a military wife? She brings shame to our soldiers!” Zhang Daya yelled, her face twisted with anger. If the girl wouldn’t help them, she wouldn’t let her have peace either.

“Oh, so you’re not pretending anymore? Didn’t you say it was for my good? Aren’t you afraid Zhong Youliang will divorce me once you talk to the leaders?” He Yashu sneered.

“You don’t care about us—why should we care about you? Do what you want!” Zhang Daya screamed in frustration when she saw her plan failing.

Xiao Zhongling clung tightly to He Yashu’s leg, too scared to look at the couple. They were terrifying.
