Fei Mao Mao Turned into a Cat
Fei Yan was a little dazed.
She lowered her head and, without much effort, saw her two furry legs. Then she lifted one of her orange paws and carefully examined the soft, squishy paw pad. At that moment, she started questioning her life.
Of course, that was only if she could still even be considered human.
Fei Yan looked around in confusion at the completely unfamiliar surroundings. It was nothing like the medical school she had been in just a moment ago. Now she stood in an open field covered with fluffy snow, surrounded by withered tree branches and… people walking by in strange clothing.
Where was this place? Had she time-traveled?
Just then, a stiff and robotic voice rang in her head.
[Beep. System loading. “Love Development Program” initiated. Hello, Host. I’m your assigned system, Thirteen.]
[First setting: You are currently a cat. An orange cat.]
Fei Yan tried to make sense of this information with the last bit of her sanity, then looked down again at her furry little legs. Letting out a dry laugh, she finally understood the situation.
So, after all her hard work in the medical field, just about to earn her doctorate, she had somehow ended up in the body of a cat?
No way. This had to be a dream.
Thirteen’s voice quickly shattered her last hope.
[Correct. You are a cat. And you can only return to human form after completing the program.]
“What counts as completing the program?”
[Once the system detects that your designated target has fallen in love with you, the program will be considered complete.]
Fei Yan: “…”
If she understood correctly, that meant someone had to fall in love with her for her to return to being human.
But she had suddenly ended up in a place she didn’t know at all. She had no idea who this “designated target” even was. And now she was a cat.
Honestly, what normal person would fall in love with a cat? This system was obviously trying to screw her over.
With that in mind, Fei Yan responded firmly, “I’m not participating in this ridiculous program. Send me back immediately.”
[Refusal to participate in the program will result in punishment: you will turn from an orange cat into a pig and will never be able to return to human form. Host, are you sure you want to refuse?]
Fei Yan: “?”
Fine, you win. It’s just a program. She’d do it.
[Host’s compliance detected. Now issuing the first task: please identify your designated target within the time of one incense stick burning. Reward: 1 point of affection.]
[Note: Once the designated target is confirmed, they cannot be changed. Please choose carefully.]
The task made Fei Yan’s head hurt. She even had to find her own designated target?
Just as she was getting frustrated, a childish voice suddenly called out beside her, “Kitty! Little kitty!”
Fei Yan snapped out of her thoughts and turned to see a chubby little girl, about five or six years old, reaching out her hands, trying to grab her tail.
Without thinking, Fei Yan swiped her tail wildly to dodge and immediately ran off in the opposite direction.
She was starting to understand why small animals always seemed so scared of people.
Humans can be really scary, especially this little girl who won’t stop chasing her and clearly wants to pet her.
Awoo… quq.
Having just arrived in this body, Fei Yan wasn’t used to it yet. She ran clumsily, stumbling here and there. She looked downright miserable.
The little girl was about to catch up when Fei Yan panicked and looked up—only to spot two tall figures nearby.
Without thinking, and not knowing where the strength came from, she pushed off with her back legs and leapt straight into the arms of one of them.
The person reacted quickly, reaching out with both hands and instinctively catching Fei Yan, holding her steadily in their arms.
At that moment, a pleasant scent of pine mixed with medicinal herbs filled Fei Yan’s nose.
She had studied medicine for years and was very sensitive to the smell of herbs. She instantly recognized the scent of aster, coltsfoot, and loquat leaves—ingredients commonly used to relieve coughing and wheezing.
Could this person be sick?
Fei Yan frowned—or, well, she tried to, though cats don’t really have eyebrows—and remained curled up in the person’s arms without moving.
Who cared if he was sick or not? The most important thing now was escaping that little girl.
“Where did this little one come from?” The man’s voice drifted down from above. It was warm and relaxed, but to Fei Yan, there was something odd about it.
Her ears twitched. She didn’t bother figuring out whether he liked cats or not—she just burrowed deeper into his arms, afraid he might hand her back to that girl.
Chen Miansheng raised an eyebrow. The little orange cat in his arms had its head buried so deep it was barely visible, its body trembling with fear.
He glanced up and immediately understood what was going on when he saw the girl chasing after them.
Before the girl even stopped running, the young man beside Chen Miansheng stepped forward with a stern look. He took a step toward Fei Yan, clearly wanting to get her out of Chen Miansheng’s arms. “Put it down.”
Chen Miansheng turned his head slightly, sensing the man’s intention, and said, “Xiao Wu, it’s fine.”
Gu Wu paused, then obediently stepped back.
Chen Miansheng lowered his gaze to look at the little girl and bent down a bit, asking gently, “Is this your cat?”
The girl bit her lip and seemed a little nervous in front of him. But after glancing at the orange cat in his arms, her eyes lit up. She shook her head and whispered, “No.”
Right after, Gu Wu made a simple hand gesture toward Chen Miansheng.
Anyone who understood sign language would know it meant the same as what the girl had said—“Not hers.”
Chen Miansheng nodded and was about to say something when a woman in plain clothing rushed over, grabbed the little girl, and began pulling her away while muttering under her breath.
“Didn’t I tell you to stay away from the sickly man? What if you catch something from him? You never listen to your mother.” As they walked farther away, the woman gave Chen Miansheng a wary look, her expression strange.
Curled up in Chen Miansheng’s arms, Fei Yan heard every word clearly.
Her eyes blinked a few times.
So he really was sick.
But still…
She quietly lifted her head. From this angle, she could just barely see the man’s chin. That strange feeling she had earlier only grew stronger.
Wasn’t this man a little too calm? That woman had said such awful things, yet he acted like he hadn’t heard a word.
How strange.
With that thought in mind, Fei Yan’s tail began to sway unconsciously, gently tapping against Chen Miansheng’s hand again and again.
Chen Miansheng lowered his eyes to glance at the restless tail. The corners of his lips lifted slightly as he gave a silent smile. Then, with one hand, he picked up the little orange cat by the scruff of her neck, as if about to place her back on the ground.
This was the first time in her life that Fei Yan had ever been grabbed by the back of her neck. Caught off guard, she let out a startled “meow,” then hurriedly wrapped her two soft front paws tightly around the man’s arm, looking very much like she had no intention of letting go, no matter what.
Chen Miansheng raised his eyebrows slightly in surprise. After thinking for a moment, he let go of the little orange cat’s scruff and instead gently pinched one of her furry ears. With a soft chuckle, he asked, “Little one, she’s gone now. Still not letting go?”
Oh right, the girl had already left.
Fei Yan smacked her lips and then guiltily loosened her grip.
Just now, she had only grabbed onto Chen Miansheng out of panic, using him as a human shield. Now that the “danger” had passed, it did seem unreasonable for her to keep clinging to him.
Fei Yan relaxed her hold, then gave a light leap and landed softly on the ground. She circled around Chen Miansheng once, then lifted her little cat head, trying to get a clear look at his face.
She had only caught a blurry glimpse earlier, so she hadn’t seen him clearly. But the moment she got a proper look at him now; her swaying tail suddenly froze in midair.
This man was just too good-looking.
Dressed in white, Chen Miansheng had his long dark hair loosely tied up. His features were sharp and well-defined. His narrow phoenix eyes tilted up slightly at the corners, and the faint, elusive smile on his lips gave him an air of gentleness and charm.
His complexion was a bit pale, and there were faint dark circles under his eyes—clear signs of poor health. But that didn’t take away from his elegant and noble aura.
At that moment, Thirteen’s voice suddenly sounded.
[One minute remaining until task ends. Host, please confirm the designated target immediately. Otherwise, the system will consider this a task failure, and the program will be terminated.]
Fei Yan: “Meow??”
