Fei Mao Mao Is About to Die of Anger
Everything happened so fast. The man was clearly startled by the sudden appearance of the little orange cat and froze in place, not daring to move.
He looked up in confusion at Ah Chu and cautiously asked, “Brother Ah Chu, this cat is…?”
Ah Chu was stunned too. He turned to look at Gu Wu. “Brother Gu?”
Gu Wu: “…” Why are you looking at me? I don’t know anything either.
It was Chen Miansheng who first noticed the commotion. He slowly lifted his eyes from the pages of his book and saw the little orange cat firmly biting the corner of the man’s robe. His expression briefly faltered, then he beckoned with his finger.
“Little Orange, come here.”
Fei Yan flattened her ears and smacked her tail against the ground, refusing to let go.
She wasn’t going to listen. Pay up first!
“Come here. Be good.”
Fei Yan glanced at Chen Miansheng. His expression remained calm, still that gentle temperament, but his tone left no room for question. Her tail swished from side to side, hesitating.
Chen Miansheng tilted his head, his voice carrying a hint of helplessness.
“Didn’t you say you’d behave?”
While Chen Miansheng was coaxing the little orange cat, the three men nearby were all wide-eyed in disbelief. Was Chen Miansheng actually communicating with a cat?
And even more absurdly, after hearing what he said, that orange cat really let go, lowered her head, and lazily trotted back to him, rubbing her head obediently against his robe.
Chen Miansheng’s expression relaxed, and he stood to offer an apologetic bow to the man. “I’m truly sorry. My little cat is a bit unruly. I hope Brother Wu won’t take offense.”
The man opened his mouth in shock and only managed to speak after a long pause. “Of… of course not.”
Knowing that Chen Miansheng couldn’t hear him, he looked at Gu Wu and asked, “Then, can I leave now?”
Gu Wu nodded. “Take care.”
Fei Yan watched the man’s retreating back with obvious displeasure, her ears drooping in visible grievance.
Hmph. He still didn’t pay.
Just as she was thinking that, she was suddenly scooped up by the scruff and pulled into Chen Miansheng’s arms.
His handsome face loomed large in front of her. His eyes, as usual, were slightly lowered, and though his voice was soft, there was no hint of blame in it. “Little Orange, why did you stop that man just now and refuse to let him go?”
Normally, if it were just an ordinary cat, Chen Miansheng would assume it was just being playful. But for some reason, he always felt like his Little Orange understood him. So after asking, he patiently waited for her response.
Sure enough, the next second, the little orange cat reached out a paw and tapped his coin pouch at his waist. Her big, shiny black eyes were wide with indignation.
Chen Miansheng raised an eyebrow, momentarily confused. “Hmm?”
Fei Yan smacked the pouch again with her paw pads, tail swishing pitifully as she did so.
Chen Miansheng thought back for a moment, then something clicked. He looked down and asked, “Was it because you saw he didn’t pay for the medicine?”
The little orange cat finally raised her head and nestled comfortably against his chest.
Chen Miansheng didn’t expect that to be the reason. He was caught between amusement and exasperation, and after a few seconds, he said softly, “Brother Wu’s family is poor. He lost his parents early on and barely makes a living by fishing. He also has a grandmother over seventy who’s ill and needs care. That’s why I let him run up a tab. I already explained this to Ah Chu and Xiao Wu earlier.”
He paused, then continued, “Even if he owes me for the medicine, it’s fine. After all, aside from this Tong Yao Hall, there’s no other medicine hall in Dongfeng Town willing to sell him medicine. And saving lives… that’s not something a few coins can measure.”
At this point, his gaze became a bit unfocused. It sounded less like he was explaining to Fei Yan and more like he was talking to himself.
Then he seemed to recall something and smiled gently. He reached out and lightly pinched the little orange cat’s ear. “I don’t know if you can understand such a long explanation, Little Orange, but even if you don’t, I hope you won’t go after Brother Wu again.”
Unexpectedly, the little orange cat’s ears drooped even more, and she kept burrowing deeper into the crook of his arm.
Chen Miansheng gave a small laugh and lifted his brow lightly. His tone had a hint of coaxing in it. “Still upset? How about I apologize to you?”
The little orange cat shook her head, and only when her whole head was tucked into the crook of his arm and hidden from view did she stay still, curled up.
She wasn’t upset.
She just…
Chen Miansheng was such a good person. How could anyone talk badly about him both to his face and behind his back?
It made the little cat so mad she could almost explode.
By dusk, the sky had darkened.
As usual, Fei Yan was carried all the way back to the small courtyard by Chen Miansheng.
Ever since he explained everything to her, the little orange cat had behaved exceptionally well, quietly snuggling in his arms, waiting patiently to leave the medicine hall and go home.
The heavy snow of midwinter had piled up thickly in just half a day.
After returning home, Chen Miansheng didn’t rest—instead, he picked up a broom and began sweeping the snow from the courtyard.
Before she transmigrated, Fei Yan had lived in a place where it rarely snowed all year round, so this heavy snowfall naturally filled her with joy and curiosity.
She happily followed beside Chen Miansheng, swiping at the snow with her little paws while secretly complaining in her mind that Gu Wu just dropped them off at the door and didn’t even bother to come in and help sweep the snow.
As for Chen Miansheng’s sickly constitution, it was on full display in this kind of weather—after sweeping just a few steps, he started coughing softly. Once he finished coughing, he continued sweeping like nothing had happened.
Fei Yan gave him a complicated look and let out a quiet sigh.
This was what people meant by being weak and not knowing how to take care of one’s own body.
Naturally, Chen Miansheng had no idea that his little orange cat was silently complaining about him. But he noticed that every time he coughed, she would immediately stop playing in the snow and look up at him, as if worried something might be wrong.
He couldn’t help but laugh softly. What a well-behaved little cat.
Seeing Chen Miansheng smile at her, Fei Yan felt even more frustrated inside.
Smile, smile, smile—what’s there to smile about? If your condition gets worse one day, let’s see if you can still smile then.
Just as she was about to give his robe a warning swipe with her claws, she suddenly heard two dull knocks in the distance.
Someone was knocking at the courtyard gate.
Chen Miansheng didn’t hear it and kept sweeping snow without reacting.
Fei Yan quickly stretched out her paw and tugged hard at the hem of his robe. When Chen Miansheng looked over, she flicked her tail toward the direction of the gate.
“Someone’s knocking?” Chen Miansheng responded quickly.
The little orange cat rubbed against him.
Chen Miansheng set the broom aside and walked over to open the courtyard gate.
The visitor was Wu Gang.
Seeing Chen Miansheng open the door, Wu Gang looked genuinely surprised and said, “Shopkeeper Chen, you can hear now?”
In truth, Wu Gang had nearly reached the Chen residence before he suddenly remembered that Chen Miansheng was deaf, and knocking might be pointless. But he figured—well, since he was already here, and if Gu Wu happened to be around, it wouldn’t be a wasted trip.
Unfortunately, without Gu Wu present, Chen Miansheng—who could only see Wu Gang’s lips moving—was unable to respond, making basic communication a struggle.
Judging by Wu Gang’s expression, Chen Miansheng guessed there was nothing urgent going on. So after a brief pause, he said plainly, “Sorry, I can’t hear. If it’s not urgent, Brother Wu, you can come to the medicine hall tomorrow and talk to Gu Wu.”
“Then how did you know someone was knocking?” Wu Gang asked, but then suddenly recalled the intelligent orange cat he saw earlier at the medicine hall. He guessed it must’ve been the cat’s doing and didn’t press further.
He quickly handed over the two carp he’d brought with him, smiling broadly.
Chen Miansheng was momentarily confused by the gesture. “Brother Wu, what’s this for?”
Wu Gang had intended to stuff the fish directly into Chen Miansheng’s hands, but after noticing how dirty his own hands were and how clean and tidy Chen Miansheng’s robe was, he hesitated. In the end, he just held the fish out again.
Chen Miansheng narrowed his eyes slightly and asked, “These are for me?”
Wu Gang nodded quickly.
Chen Miansheng understood, he guessed it was likely because Wu Gang had racked up another tab at the medicine hall today. “There’s no need for this. Fishing’s not easy work. These two carp are a good size, you should keep them for your wife’s nourishment.”
But seeing that Chen Miansheng wouldn’t accept them, Wu Gang panicked.
Today’s catch had been unusually bountiful—nearly double the usual amount. Wanting to deliver the freshest fish, he had rushed over. If Chen Miansheng didn’t take them, all that effort would be in vain.
Wu Gang waved his hands in the air in frustration. Unfortunately, he didn’t know any sign language, so all he could do was helplessly meet Chen Miansheng’s eyes.
Suddenly he had an idea and looked into the courtyard, he spotted the orange cat still happily playing in the snow and quickly pointed to it.
Following his gaze, Chen Miansheng’s eyes landed on the little orange cat. At last, a hint of hesitation appeared on his face.
He understood what Wu Gang meant: even if he didn’t want the fish, they could at least be given to the cat.
His little cat probably liked fish. She’d been hungry most of the previous night, and he hadn’t yet made it up to her. The carp Wu Gang brought looked plump and fresh—if he could cook one for her, she’d surely be delighted.
Still, since Wu Gang brought them as a gift, he didn’t want to accept them so casually. Just as he turned to decline again, Wu Gang stuffed the fish into his hands.
“Come on, Shopkeeper Chen, just take them!” Wu Gang couldn’t be bothered to argue anymore. Seizing the moment while Chen Miansheng was distracted, he shoved the fish into his hands and turned to leave.
“Wait,” Chen Miansheng called out, surprised. “Brother Wu, hold on.”
But Wu Gang pretended not to hear and took off running, clearly not planning to give him a chance to return them.
Chen Miansheng stood there for a moment; the rest of his words stuck in his throat.
With his current body, there was no way he could catch up. He looked at Wu Gang’s retreating figure, then down at the two lively fish still wriggling in his hands. After a bit of thought, he decided to significantly reduce the amount Wu Gang owed on his medicine bill before slowly closing the door.
When he returned to the courtyard carrying the fish, the little orange cat was still gleefully playing in the snow, her nose now dusted with a white smudge.
Chen Miansheng chuckled softly, walked over behind her, and gently brushed off the snow on her nose. Then he brought the fish in front of her and gave them a shake: “Little Orange, look what Brother Wu brought you to eat!”
Fei Yan had been completely absorbed in her snow play and was caught off guard. Looking up suddenly, she came face-to-face with two lifeless fish eyes and immediately let out a shrill screech:
“Meow—owowowow!”
