Living Leisurely in Tang Dynasty Chapter 166

Fang Xuanling pinched his nose and continued reading. After the endless flattery, he finally saw the main point the emperor was talking about.

Li Yuanying waved his hand and marked out a large piece of land intended as a land for learning. He mentions in his letter that this is an imitation of the temple’s blessing. Temples often have charity homes, using the land donated by believers as a blessing place to support widows and orphans. Because of this, Buddhist compassion is widely known!

If the temples can do this, the academies can certainly do so too. He plans to follow Buddhist secular lectures and preach in-depth and easy-to-understand stories to educate the people.

Yuanying will also include other contents that were less interesting on weekdays. Seeing how Chengxin goes to the temple to learn secular lectures, Yuanying ponders on what else can the temple monks teach him. Why is it so difficult to educate, but the Buddhist temples are blooming everywhere?

This thought led Li Yuanying to the topic of school land.

Yuanying came up with the key words, while his system and Wang Yifang’s team gave him suggestions for reference and improvement. The schooling system that became popular only in the Song Dynasty [1]Tang Dynasty was succeeded by the Five Dynasties then succeeded by the Song Dynasty was now invented by him!

The Song Dynasty was a place full of scholars, and it was the happiest era for scholars! This so-called school land is not for agriculture purposes but is an allocated land by the Imperial Court for scholars. The taxes paid doesn’t need to be send back to the government but will be used to fund the needs of the school only.

Land is the foundation of a civilization. As long as there is an allocated school land, the funds needed for maintenance will not need to be allocated separately and there’s no worry of it being diverted for other things! With that, how can education not be popular?

Yuanying’s ability to switch the tide topics is enviable. At the very least, Fang Xuanling felt that he can tolerate the poisoning from the first portion full of flattery and just ponder on the middle part carefully.

Thinking about Zhangsun Wuji’s smiling face, Fang Xuanling thinks he shouldn’t suffer alone. He smiled back and handed the letter to Zhangsun Wuji, asking him to read it.

Zhangsun Wuji took the letter and braced through the familiar cheesy-ness. He read on with a hard to describe feeling, and finally found the key point just like Fang Xuanling.

Zhangsun Wuji looked up and exchanged glances with Fang Xuanling. “I think this is feasible.” He knew that His Majesty attached great importance to civil governance and dreamed of creating a prosperous era. Li Er would definitely adopt this suggestion which will benefit future generations!

After hearing what Zhangsun Wuji had to say, Li Er ask Fang Xuanling for his opinion.

It’s easy to come up with an idea, but hard to execute them. If they left it to Li Yuanying, he would jump head first without thinking too much. But governing the Country is no joke. Before making any decision, you have to consider all aspects of the impact.

Li Er would make mistakes from time to time, claiming that “although I am the Emperor, I often take on the work of civil officials and military generals”. However in totality, he was still a rational leader and had the principle of “ask more questions when encountering things”.

After the small meeting with the Emperor, both ministers each held their own small meeting too. Only after that did the school system proposed by Li Yuanying become finalized.

At this same time, Yuanying’s party has travelled halfway. They travelled like the wind and no one complained about being tired. The group was full of expectations for Tengzhou. Even if it might be poor and backward, and might not be as prosperous as Chang’an, this is a place where they can show their skills!

Every time Li Yuanying set up camp, he would walk go into the city and walk around. This is to inspect the local cities and then send men to stay and open a branch of his restaurant.

Some time ago, the iron ore that the Emperor secretly promised was given to him and he created big and round iron pots one after another. After arriving at a place, he would leave behind a group of people and pots, giving them instructions to open his business, seize the market and lead the trend!

Of course, every time he arrived at a new place, Yuanying would write back to the Emperor to report what he had done.

Yuanying believes that good deeds should be left behind. Since he is sincerely helping the Emperor with the Mount Tai plan, how can he not write back about all his effort to the Emperor? Therefore, he wrote to the  Emperor every day with diligence.

Li Er was happy to receive the letters. His youngest brother was a good brother and very close to him!

Others treated him as the Emperor. Some dared not talk to him, and some dared not chat with him. They either acted upright or terrified. He is also human and needed this emotional touch. Anyway, Emperor Li Er is very happy to be coaxed by Li Yuanying.

But this made Fang Xuanling and his men suffer. If the idea of setting up school fields was still somewhat debatable and practical, then the following letters were pure flattery. The core content of each letter was to express “Royal brother, you are so kind. I will remember your kindness, so I am also working hard for what I promised you.”

It’s fine if His Majesty likes to read them alone but when he is in the mood, he invites others to read them together so that no one can forget the misfortune called Li Yuanying.

Who is the wicked person who taught him how to write articles? It’s better to let him stay ignorant!!!

Only after His Majesty had finished torturing all his trusted ministers, did Li Yuanying finally arrived at Tengzhou. Yuanying will need to rely on several horses if he wanted to deliver letters to Chang’an from now onwards!

Its now winter and the group  changed into winter clothes on the road. Yuanying rode on a horse wrapped in a cloak. The Northern wind blowing on his face was lovely, this place is destined to be his fiefdom!

Yuanying led the way to Tengzhou City. Compared with the tall and majestic Chang’an, Tengzhou looked a bit more delicate. No matter from which angle., Yuanying is very satisfied.

Not sure if the skies sensed that he was coming but it suddenly began to snow. Everyone stopped to see fine snowflakes falling, and the world was suddenly covered with a layer of white. Yuanying happily turned around and shared his joy: “It’s snowing, the first snow of the year!”

Wu Mei also rode on horseback in riding outfit without a veil. She looked bright and dazzling, like a pearl out of a box. She smiled: “Auspicious snow indicates a good harvest.”

Di Renjie: “Yes, it looks like there will be a good harvest this year.”

Yuanying was happy to hear such auspicious words.

The governor of Tengzhou personally welcomed them. Although Yuanying had not been to Tengzhou, the commotion he caused along the way was well-known. The entire government office was eagerly awaiting his arrival at the city gate for him.

They lined up in a row according to their rank and looked spectacular. They should have come if they could. With the experience of handling Hu County, he has had some experience in handling people relations. Seeing their hospitality, Yuanying didn’t make thing difficult but greeted the group nd followed them into the city.

Compared to the grand scene when he left Chang’an, Yuanying’s stuffs have actually reduced by half. He has been unloading pots and leaving people behind along the way making his luggages decrease by two thirds. Still such a show of power still attracted the attention of many in Tengzhou. Even though it was snowing, many gathered to watch the group heading towards the palace.

Li Yuanying greeted the people happily along the way.

The people saw that Prince Teng was smiling and bowing to them making him even more handsome. The public felt that they had misjudged Li Yuanying. When they confirmed that Yuanying was indeed smiling, they were shocked and followed him all the way outside Prince Teng’s Mansion. They all wanted to see this newly arrived young prince clearly!
