61: Crisis!
The virus research facility had its own independent power system, which ensured a constant supply of electricity.
Therefore, even if the entire city lost power, the facility stayed lit.
All the lights were on and the elevators functioned normally.
At that moment, They were inside an elevator.
The normally reticent Lin Zhiwei suddenly told the soldiers, “Put your weapons away.”
Her tone remained forceful.
The soldiers froze and frowned instinctively.
It was so dangerous inside the research facility, yet she wanted them to put their weapons away.
Wasn’t that suicide?
Even the ever-cooperative Captain Zhao was unwilling to obey Lin Zhiwei at this moment.
After all, everyone’s safety was at stake.
If they stowed their weapons, their reaction time against an enemy would slow by several seconds.
Most of the time, a few seconds decided whether someone lived or died.
Captain Zhao therefore told the soldiers, “Stay alert and keep your fingers off the triggers… there might be something important in the underground lab!”
“Yes, sir!”
The soldiers accepted the order, and their discomfort eased a little.
They could be careful not to misfire, but putting the guns away was impossible.
Otherwise they would feel unsafe.
“Doctor Lin, you can rest assured… none of my men will discharge their weapons by accident!” Captain Zhao explained to Lin Zhiwei.
Because Lin Zhiwei said nothing, he guessed the underground lab contained some precious genetic samples that must not be damaged by gunfire.
But Captain Zhao trusted his men.
They had received professional training and would never fire by mistake under such circumstances.
Captain Zhao’s solution was a compromise; he neither sided with his soldiers nor with Lin Zhiwei.
“No, I’m not worried about genetic samples.”
Lin Zhiwei adjusted her glasses, looked at the soldiers, and said without the slightest emotion, “I’m worried about you.”
“???”
The soldiers were completely confused.
Worried about us when we are fully armed?
More than one of them even wanted to laugh.
If they had brought enough ammunition, they could have swept through this virus research facility!
What mutant plants or animals could survive rifle fire or grenades?
Their caution came from limited firepower, not from fear.
Ding!
Just then.
The elevator stopped at the third basement level, and the doors opened.
A long corridor came into view.
The passage was high and wide, and the white lights were dazzling.
The soldiers instantly raised their rifles and scanned the surroundings.
They saw dark red blood splattered all over the walls.
There were also long drag marks on the floor.
Yet no corpses or mutant creatures were in sight!
All the soldiers heightened their vigilance.
Situations like this usually indicated an extremely high level of danger.
Two soldiers stepped out of the elevator first to scout.
Then, before they could report, Lin Zhiwei also walked out right behind them.
As always, she showed no fear, as though everything was under control.
“Doctor Lin!”
Captain Zhao’s face changed, and he hurried after her.
Lin Zhiwei said nothing and headed toward the laboratory at the end of the hallway.
Seeing this, the soldiers had no choice but to follow quickly.
Captain Zhao’s expression looked unpleasant.
This Doctor Lin was far too reckless.
She completely ignored their arrangements.
If a mutant animal really appeared, they would have no time to rescue Lin Zhiwei.
When they reached the lab door at the end, Lin Zhiwei stood before the code-locked door, looked back at the soldiers, and repeated, “Put your guns away and don’t show hostility, or I won’t be able to guarantee your safety.”
She spoke little, yet conveyed a lot.
Still, the soldiers did not like what they heard.
Put the guns away and hide their hostility to stay safe?
Sorry, they only trusted the guns in their hands.
Thus not a single soldier obeyed her.
“Captain Zhao, please have them stow their weapons or it will be truly dangerous! There is a very powerful mutant creature in here; ordinary weapons can’t hurt it and will only enrage it!” the male researcher in a white coat urged.
“Dr. Lin is just taciturn and bad at expressing herself… she actually has our best interests at heart!” another male researcher explained.
They knew Lin Zhiwei’s temperament and how intelligent she was.
She might be young and female, but that did not mean she was incompetent.
Even the veteran professors held this genius Doctor Lin in high regard.
When they first arrived at the research facility, they too had underestimated her because she was a woman.
They had paid a heavy price for that.
Hearing the two researchers, Captain Zhao frowned.
Like his men, he relied more on the sense of security a gun provided.
Still, he did not wish to offend Doctor Lin and the other two, so he ordered the soldiers to lower their muzzles and refrain from firing unless absolutely necessary.
Although they had not actually stowed the guns, it still gave Doctor Lin some face.
That should be acceptable.
Lin Zhiwei ignored Captain Zhao’s little calculation; after reminding them a second time, she began to enter the passcode, followed by facial and retinal scans to unlock the lab door.
As for what would happen next, she had already warned them.
Click!
With a crisp sound, the heavy laboratory door slowly opened.
An unpleasant odor wafted out, causing everyone to frown and raise their guard.
“Woof!!!”
Suddenly, a deep, resonant bark echoed from inside the lab.
The sound was so piercing that the soldiers automatically lifted their rifles into firing position.
Lin Zhiwei frowned.
“Something’s wrong…”
“Why is it awake?”
“This door clearly hasn’t been opened, and no one has entered.”
Muttering to herself, she immediately closed the lab door she had just opened and turned around. “Leave now! Get out of here!”
Everyone froze, puzzled.
“Doctor Lin, what’s going on?”
“The specimen is out of control; I’m the only one who can handle it. Evacuate the lab at once!”
For the first time, urgency colored Lin Zhiwei’s voice.
But Captain Zhao gripped his rifle, stared at the door, and refused to retreat.
He would cover Doctor Lin and the two researchers first.
“Doctor Lin, you can’t take the risk! You and the researchers fall back first!”
“Everyone else, prepare for combat!”
Captain Zhao placed himself in front of Lin Zhiwei and issued his orders methodically.
The soldiers flicked off the safeties and stared at the closed door.
Meanwhile, inside the laboratory, heavy breathing kept echoing.
Next came a vibration so strong it seemed to shake the entire room.
Something had gotten up and was walking toward the door.
The soldiers’ faces grew grim.
This noise suggested it was no ordinary mutant creature.
Bang!!
Suddenly the thick iron door took a massive blow and dented inward.
The soldiers’ pupils contracted.
Such a thick door was deformed in one strike!
What kind of strength was that!
Bang!
Bang!
Two more heavy impacts followed, and the reinforced door was about to give way.
The soldiers tightened their grips on the rifles, tension rising uncontrollably.
What sort of monster had such terrifying power!
And what was the point of that door… it could not stop the creature at all!
It offered no real barrier to this monster!
Bang!!!
With another tremendous blow, the door collapsed under the strain.
A huge green mass burst into view.
“Fire!!”
Without a second’s hesitation, Captain Zhao gave the order and squeezed the trigger of his submachine gun.
Lin Zhiwei, blocked behind him, tried to speak but it was already too late.
Countless bullets tore into the green monster at once.
