Chapter 3: System Upgrade, Lucky Card Pack from Loot Box
Wen Mingyue noticed her system’s unease and quickly offered some reassurance.
069 gritted its nonexistent teeth, thinking to itself that its host was actually quite kind.
It then earnestly explained, “All systems start with the initial number 0, and we’re dispatched to bind with hosts in countless small worlds as interns. The number represents how many small worlds we’ve been through. After successfully completing the internship, we can graduate and level up, and then take on higher-tier missions.”
After finishing, it added quickly, “All systems have the same functions before upgrading.”
069 stole a guilty glance at its host after speaking. When it saw no trace of disappointment on Wen Mingyue’s face, it breathed a sigh of relief.
Wen Mingyue, meanwhile, was silently clicking her tongue in amusement after hearing the explanation.
So the system she had in her previous life was a total slacker—went through over 2000 small worlds and still didn’t graduate. What a laid-back bull of a system.
By comparison, this 069 was a promising newcomer. She could properly guide it. With that thought, she nodded to herself and cast a few satisfied glances at the panda dumpling floating in her space.
At that moment, 069 received a message from its interstellar internship supervisor:
{Little Q: Player Wen Mingyue’s approval rating for Survival Game intern 069 has been detected.
Internship score: +10. Current total score: 10. Note: Maximum approval rating is 20.
Current upgrade progress: 10%. Click here to view new upgrade features.
Score required for graduation: 60.
Score for excellent graduate: 90–99.
Representative excellent graduate score: 100.
Keep up the good work! We hope you graduate soon!}
System 069: Aaaaah! The host really is beautiful and kind-hearted!
This was the very first time 069 had ever received any sort of approval rating in all the small worlds it had experienced. In the past, it was constantly disliked by its hosts. Not only did it not gain any points—it kept losing them, which led to repeated delays in graduation.
Now, 069 felt like it was injected with chicken blood, fired up with motivation to wholeheartedly assist its host. It immediately started checking the newly unlocked upgrade features with full attention.
At the same time, the countdown for the deserted island deployment began.
[Deploying to Deserted Island…]
As the light screen vanished, Wen Mingyue was instantly dropped onto a ground covered in variously sized stones, almost tripping.
Luckily, she quickly adjusted and looked around at the familiar deserted island. Her heart was beating with excitement. Just thinking about the rewards she could get after eliminating the monsters on the island made her forget all about hunting for treasure chests.
Once the excitement passed, she noticed a group of five trembling figures beside her—the unlucky team of five who were shivering from the cold. In her past life, they were six—because she had been one of them.
There were three girls and two boys—youngsters from the south, around the same age as Wen Mingyue. In her previous life, she’d talked with them and knew they were all pretty weak, with no real combat power.
She watched as the group looked around nervously before finally finding a spot that could block the wind. They huddled tightly together. After all, this was a survival game—no one had the luxury of being sentimental. Staying alive came first.
Two of them even wanted to invite Wen Mingyue to join them in shielding against the cold, but when they saw the thick down jacket she was wearing, they hesitated and said nothing.
Wen Mingyue paid them no attention. Her mind was focused entirely on defeating monsters and completing missions. In her last life, she had only listened to the system broadcast the list of rewards, and she had drooled over them the whole time.
Now, under the envious gazes of the unlucky five, she quickly made her way toward the central area.
Long legs were a blessing—time was money, and even a one-second delay made Wen Mingyue feel distressed.
After about half an hour of walking, Wen Mingyue squinted and came to a stop.
“Looks like the center area is just up ahead,” she muttered.
She pulled a large machete from her system inventory and was just about to charge forward when the newly upgraded 069 called out to her:
[Host, there’s a treasure chest hidden in the bushes eight meters ahead.]
Wen Mingyue made a sharp turn on the spot, nearly pulling a muscle in her back, and followed the system’s guidance. Sure enough, she uncovered a metal treasure chest hidden in a low, dense shrub.
In her previous life, once she arrived on the deserted island, she’d been glued to the group chat, watching the player count drop steadily. That kept her lingering on the island’s edge, lying low until the 8-hour exploration period ended.
As a result, she hadn’t found a single chest—just picked up a few branches nearby.
But this time, it was a fantastic start. Without hesitation, Wen Mingyue gave her trusty system a solid thumbs-up.
At the same time, system 069 received a message from the main game system, Little Q:
{Little Q: Approval rating +5. Upgrade progress: 15%}
069: What do I do if my host loves me too much…
Meanwhile, crouched on the ground, Wen Mingyue rubbed her hands together, offering heartfelt blessings to the God of Fortune and his entire family before preparing to open the box.
[Open the treasure chest?]
Wen Mingyue quickly selected Open.
[Treasure chest opened. You have received: 1 Lucky Value Card — tradable.]
[Lucky Card total print quantity: 5. Probability of winning: 5 in 3 billion.
The fact that you pulled this from a metal chest means your luck today is off the charts.]
[Use / Trade]
Wen Mingyue nodded like crazy. “Use it! Use it! Use it!”
Only a fool would choose to trade it.
Then, with trembling hands, she opened her personal status panel:
Luck Value: 7 + 1 (Are you the Lady Luck herself?), Max: 10, Upgradable
Ah, a full sense of security.
Wen Mingyue knew just how crucial the Luck stat was in the game world—no one understood it better than she did.
The system prompted that the treasure chest could be dismantled. Without hesitation, Wen Mingyue clicked “Dismantle” and received: 5 iron pieces.
Over the next two hours, guided by her trusty system baby, she found another 3 wooden chests and 1 iron chest.
Beside the iron chest was a green snake lurking in the bushes. It hadn’t even gotten the chance to sneak-attack before Wen Mingyue slashed its weak spot—its seventh inch—and killed it instantly.
Since landing on the island, she had activated her Eye of Insight, a skill that automatically highlighted the fatal weak points of nearby dangerous creatures with a glowing red dot.
In a sea of green, a flickering red glow was impossible to ignore—even if she wanted to pretend she didn’t see it.
[Open treasure chest?]
She opened all four chests at once and received the following items:
500ml bottled water ×2
Large steamed buns ×3
Random pack of vegetable and spice seeds (non-reproducible)
Mid-tier bow ×1, with 10 arrows
Snake meat ×2 portions, 300g each
Wood ×3 units per box, total of 12
Iron nails ×8 per box, total of 24
From the two iron chests (including the earlier one), she also gained 10 iron pieces after dismantling.
The upgraded 069 faithfully explained all the new unlocked features to Wen Mingyue in detail. Very soon, her approval rating maxed out at 20 points, and her treasure chest detection radius increased to 50 meters.
With that, the pair—host and system—held a planning session and divided the island into five distinct zones, determined to conquer them one by one.
Their goal? No chest or monster left behind.
Their posture? Like bandits storming a mountain stronghold.
With Eye of Insight + Treasure-hunting System, in less than three hours, they harvested:
16 wooden chests
6 iron chests
And took down:
1 Level-2 Mad Bull monster
2 Level-1 Giant Rabbits
1 Level-1 Aggressive Mother Hen
At one point, she accidentally stumbled into a large pond.
Wen Mingyue’s heart screamed “Save me!”—it was full of snakes. Goosebumps exploded all over her body. She could only grit her teeth, snatch the nearby treasure chest, and dash away at full speed.
