The girl who was the first to come up with it was somewhat delighted after receiving the reward of ten taels of silver.
“Is this… really for me?”
She had always received nothing but others’ disdain, never once receiving praise, let alone any reward.
She had secretly saved money to attend the County Princess’s Women’s Academy.
The first time she went, she was beaten by her family, but she didn’t regret it.
After studying at the academy, she went to work at a workshop, earning a lot of money every month. This time, she was also cautious, and she would never give all her money to her family.
Even if she did, she would only give one-third, not foolishly giving them everything like before.
Now that the County Princess suddenly rewarded her with ten taels of silver, it was a recognition from the County Princess herself.
This made her very happy.
“Of course, it’s for you. There are many benefits to working with the County Princess. You have a great talent for these things. Don’t worry about family matters. Just earn more money for yourself, save it well, and in the future, when you find the right person to marry, you’ll have a better life.” The steward had a good relationship with her and, knowing how poorly her family treated her, always took good care of her.
“I understand.”
“Just keep working hard and strive to receive even more rewards next time.”
“I will definitely do my best.”
Others who only received one or two taels of silver weren’t jealous; this was what she deserved.
“Now, go and do your work.”
Wang Jinhe looked at the fabric in her hand, a slight smile playing on her lips. This girl is quite impressive.
Setting down the fabric, she stood up and went out to meet people.
The steward was somewhat surprised to see Wang Jinhe approaching. “County Princess, why are you here?”
“I’ve come to see the person who came up with this method,” Wang Jinhe explained with a smile.
Upon hearing Wang Jinhe’s words, the steward’s smile grew wider. “This girl has had a tough life too. Her family doesn’t care about her at all. She even had to save money to go to the academy herself. She was almost beaten to death by her mother for that.”
Hearing this, Wang Jinhe instinctively frowned. “And then?”
“This girl is also stubborn. Despite everything, she insisted on going to the academy and then started working at the workshop after she finished her studies.” Wang Jinhe looked at the fabric in her hand, a slight smile playing on her lips. This girl is quite impressive.
“She’s been at the workshop for three months and hasn’t gone back home once.”
For her, staying here was actually better. She didn’t have to deal with people’s attitudes or listen to their snide remarks.
“If her family treats her badly, she can just stay at the workshop. If her parents come causing trouble, make sure the guards here help out a bit. We can’t let our people be bullied,” Wang Jinhe instructed.
“County Princess, rest assured, I’ll inform the people below about this matter.”
“If she has any problems, you can come to me directly. I’ll help with whatever I can.”
The steward hesitated for a moment, looking at Wang Jinhe, unsure whether to bring up something or not.
“If there’s anything, just tell me directly. No need to beat around the bush like this.”
“County Princess, there’s something else. Earlier, I heard her mentioning that her parents seemed to have arranged a marriage for her, but the prospective partner is very unsuitable. She hasn’t agreed to it, but judging by her recent demeanor, her family probably won’t let it go easily,” the steward said helplessly.
“Is that so?”
“County Princess, you know many people. Could you perhaps introduce her to someone suitable? If she gets married, then even if her parents try to do something, they won’t have any power over her,” the steward looked at Wang Jinhe and said.
She knew it was inappropriate to make such a request to Wang Jinhe, but she couldn’t help but feel deeply sorry for this girl.
“I do have quite a few single friends around me. I’ll ask them for their opinions when I return. You also inform her and see if she’s willing. If she is, that’s good naturally, but if she’s not, forcing her into it would be no different from what her father is doing, right?”
“I’ll go ask right away,” without waiting for a response, the steward hurried off, leaving Wang Jinhe with no time to react.
Wang Jinhe wanted to stop the steward, but she wasn’t given the chance.
She shook her head helplessly, watching the steward’s departing figure. She thought it might be for the best, as it would quickly reveal the other person’s intentions, making it easier to plan for the future.
The steward approached the girl, Lian’er. “Lian’er, didn’t you tell me before that your parents arranged a bad marriage for you? I just spoke to the County Princess about it. She mentioned having many single acquaintances and offered to inquire for you. She also asked me to come and ask for your thoughts. If you think it’s acceptable, the County Princess will act as a matchmaker for you. Take some time to consider.”
Lian’er looked at the steward in surprise. “Steward, won’t helping me like this cause trouble for you?”
“No, it won’t. I just can’t bear to see you mistreated by your parents.” Knowing what kind of people they were, they didn’t deserve to be Lian’er’s parents.
Lian’er looked at the steward with a bitter expression. Even a stranger showed concern and help, yet her own parents treated her like that.
“Thank you for helping me. I’ve thought it through, I agree with what you said.”
As long as she could leave her current situation and find someone who treated her well, whether they were a commoner or a servant of the County Princess’s household, she could accept it.
“I’ll go inform the County Princess.”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Lian’er’s embarrassment was quickly replaced by anticipation.
She wondered what kind of person the County Princess would introduce to her.
The steward came out and informed Wang Jinhe of Lian’er’s decision.
Wang Jinhe nodded gently after hearing it. “I understand.”
“I’ll go back and talk to my family before coming back to you.”
“Alright.”
Wang Jinhe left the workshop and returned to where Yuan Lin was, noticing his helpless expression. She cleared her throat lightly and said, “I went to the workshop. Yuan Lin, do you want to get married?”
Yuan Lin was taken aback by Wang Jinhe’s sudden question. After a moment of hesitation, he felt a bit embarrassed and replied, “If it’s possible, of course I would like to get married.”
Seeing how happy life could be after marriage, he was actually quite envious. However, finding someone he truly liked wasn’t easy.
“There’s a girl at the workshop who’s quite nice, but her family isn’t very good. They want to marry her off to someone not so great. The steward came to ask me about this matter. Take some time to think about it. If you’re willing, I’ll inform them, and you can meet each other. If you think it’s alright, then we can discuss further,” Wang Jinhe explained the situation at the workshop to Yuan Lin.
“Is the girl you’re talking about Lian’er?” Yuan Lin asked curiously.
Wang Jinhe observed Yuan Lin as he looked him over.
Feeling a bit embarrassed under Wang Jinhe’s gaze, Yuan Lin cleared his throat. “I encountered her family when I came to help Madam investigate something before. I even helped her once.”
If it weren’t for him intervening that time, this Lian’er girl would probably have had an even more miserable fate.
Wang Jinhe hadn’t expected that the two had already met.
“So, you’ve already met. What do you think of her?” Wang Jinhe inquired.
Yuan Lin suddenly felt a bit embarrassed. “She’s… she’s quite nice.”
