Chapter 24 – I Don’t Want a Fierce Wife

As soon as Xie Dabao heard that Xu Nuo had asked Lu Chen to let him go, he immediately turned to Lu Chen and promised, “I’ll be good! I won’t cause trouble! My wife said she wants to talk to me, I’ll behave!”

Lu Chen gave a small nod and slowly released him.

“Dabao, come here,” Xu Nuo said as she stepped to the side, beckoning him over.

Xie Dabao was overjoyed and hurried after her. “Wife, are you finally going to marry Dabao and have babies with me?”

Xu Nuo smiled and shook her head.

“Wife smiled! My wife smiled! Dabao has a wife!” he said with a goofy grin, utterly delighted.

“Then tell me,” Xu Nuo asked, “do you even know how babies are made?”

Xie Dabao nodded and grinned wider. “I know! I saw my papa and mama doing that thing! Papa said that’s how you make little babies!”

As he spoke, he pointed to his lower body and added cheerfully, “Right here!”

Xu Nuo’s lips curved upward slightly. She leaned closer and said softly, “Well, I don’t want any babies. So if I marry you, the first thing I’ll do is take a pair of scissors and snip—cut off your little wee-wee!”

Her voice was low, thinking others wouldn’t hear her if she kept some distance.

What she didn’t realize was that Lu Chen, once a reconnaissance soldier and now a regiment commander, had far better hearing than normal people. Hearing her absolutely outrageous line, he couldn’t help but let the corners of his mouth curl up.

Xie Dabao, however, was completely spooked. Who knows what kind of image he conjured up in his head—but whatever it was, it scared him stiff.

Suddenly, he burst into tears. “I don’t want Xu Nuo! I don’t want a fierce wife! I don’t want her!”

Xie Gui’s heart broke seeing his son cry. He hurried forward and took his hand. “Don’t cry, don’t cry. We won’t take Xu Nuo. We’ll find you a gentle wife.”

Sniffling, Xie Dabao hid behind his father. “I want a gentle wife. Not Xu Nuo. She’s fierce… she’ll use scissors to cut…”

“Yes, yes, okay.”

With that issue finally resolved, Xu Nuo left with Lu Chen.

As the two of them got into the car, Xiao Wei glanced at the faint smile on the commander’s face. Seemed like the boss was in a pretty good mood.

Xu Nuo was in a great mood too. As she gazed out the window, her heart was already filled with anticipation for her new life.

From the rearview mirror, Lu Chen glanced at her. He noticed she liked to rest her chin on her palm while looking out the window quietly. Her long lashes curled like a doll’s.

He shifted his gaze back to the road, but that one outrageous line from earlier still echoed in his mind. He couldn’t hold back his amusement—his smile hadn’t faded since.

When they reached the edge of the village, they saw Xu Lao’er’s family standing by the roadside, trying to flag them down.

“Commander?” Xiao Wei asked for instruction.

“Stop the car,” Lu Chen said.

“No—don’t stop!” Xu Nuo said urgently. “They’re trying to follow us to the city. We can’t let them! They still owe people money and haven’t paid it back. They can’t just leave! And besides, they’ll only cause trouble in the capital. No way they’re getting on this car.”

“Understood,” Lu Chen said. Then he told Xiao Wei, “Speed up. Drive past them.”

“Yes, sir!”

Xu Lao’er and his family watched as the military jeep rolled up toward them. They thought the car was about to stop, so they grabbed their heavy bags, ready to climb on.

But just as they were about to move forward, the vehicle sped up—

Whoosh—in the blink of an eye, it had zoomed past them, disappearing down the road, leaving behind nothing but a thick cloud of dust.

Xu Nuo couldn’t hear their cursing from inside the car, but she could tell from their flailing arms and furious faces that they were fuming. They were stomping, waving dust from their faces, and even spitting into the dirt.

Watching it all unfold, Xu Nuo’s smile widened.

Serves them right.
Absolutely deserved it.

After traveling for a full day and night, they finally returned to the capital. As soon as they got back, Lu Chen didn’t even rest. He went straight to the Civil Affairs Bureau with the paperwork in hand and collected their marriage certificate without stopping to catch his breath.

Holding the marriage certificate, which looked more like an award than anything else, Xu Nuo felt a little dazed. She was actually married.

In less than a month of arriving in this world, she had gotten herself married off!

As they passed by a photo studio, Xu Nuo suddenly stopped and suggested, “Let’s take a wedding photo.”

Lu Chen nodded slightly. “Alright.”

A few minutes later, with the click of the camera shutter, a moment in time was permanently captured.

“You can pick up the photo in three days,” the photographer said.

Lu Chen handed over a little extra money. “We’re in a bit of a rush.”

“Then you can come pick it up tomorrow.”

When the two returned home with their marriage certificate, Cheng Wanying had already instructed Aunt Lin to prepare a table full of food, waiting for their return.

“You got the marriage certificate? Let me see it!”

Xu Nuo handed it over. “Auntie, here you go!”

“Auntie? What should you be calling me now?”

Xu Nuo smiled a little shyly. “Mom.”

“Ah, good!” Cheng Wanying responded warmly. “Now that you’re married, we’re family. Starting tomorrow, everyone should call each other properly.”

So Xu Nuo went around and greeted the family one by one. When she got to Lu Cheng, she softly called out, “Little brother.”

That one word made Lu Cheng feel like he was sitting on pins and needles. Clearly uncomfortable, he nodded stiffly. “Mm.”

Lu Chen frowned. “Lu Cheng, she’s your sister-in-law. You should call her properly.”

With a stiff expression, Lu Cheng muttered awkwardly, “Sis… Sister-in-law.”

Xu Nuo didn’t show a trace of awkwardness. She smiled at him and responded cheerfully, “Yes!”

“Come, let’s eat!” Aunt Lin brought out the dishes. “I’m just so happy. Our Chenchen is married! Such a joyful occasion. Once the wedding is done tomorrow, you two can start your life together happily.”

“Thank you, Aunt Lin. I’ll take your good wishes,” Xu Nuo said with a smile as she helped out in the kitchen. The way she busied herself really did make her look like a newlywed bride.

The next day, the wedding was held in the auditorium inside the military compound. Keeping with the principle of simplicity, there were no extravagant decorations—just a few tables set up for friends and neighbors from the compound.

Lu Chen wore his military uniform, with a big red flower pinned to his chest. Xu Nuo had her long hair styled up with two little red velvet flowers at her temples, and wore a red dress with a pair of leather shoes.

The newlyweds toasted with cross-cupped wine under the blessings of the crowd. Led by Lu Huaizheng, they went around to the tables, offering drinks to neighbors and friends. Just like that, the wedding was complete.

In the corner, Lei Ming huddled with Yang Pan and Yang Dong, whispering to each other.

“I think Xu Nuo and Brother Lu are actually a good match.”

“And now Lu Cheng has to call her sister-in-law! Hahaha, I wonder if it’s gonna be awkward living under the same roof?”

“Of course it will be! Hey, I heard something juicy—Lu Cheng and Jiang Miaomiao are together. That means Jiang Miaomiao and Xu Nuo are now sisters-in-law. This is gonna get very interesting!”

As Lu Cheng passed by with a wine glass in hand, he caught the whispers from his friends and shot them a sharp glare.

The three instantly shut their mouths.

Xu Nuo followed Lu Chen up to the second floor—his room. Originally, there had only been a single bed in the room, but while they had gone to Qingshan Village to get the marriage certificate, Cheng Wanying had arranged for it to be replaced with a 1.5-meter-wide double bed.

Once they entered and closed the door behind them, the air instantly became warm and a little awkward.
