“You, why are you crying now? I didn’t say anything.” Qi Yuanhua panicked when he saw his wife’s eyes reddening, hastily trying to comfort her.
Shen Yuerong wiped the corner of her eye. “I just feel wronged and upset. All the effort our family has put in over the years feels like it wasn’t worth it. Anyway, I’m making it clear now: I won’t acknowledge the eldest branch of the family anymore.”
“Alright, alright, we won’t acknowledge them. Don’t upset yourself over this.”
Qi Yuanhua flustered as he soothed his wife’s emotions. This was the first time he had seen his wife so resolute.
In his eyes, his wife had always been gentle and virtuous. This just showed how outrageous the eldest branch’s actions had been.
Shen Yuerong continued, “I really like that girl, Huanhuan. Whether what they said is true or not, since that’s their claim, we’ll take it at face value. Sometimes, it’s better to feign ignorance—digging too deep might not be a good thing.”
“As long as it doesn’t harm our family, why should we care so much? Besides, Xiao Han is already an adult. He can judge right from wrong himself. As long as the young couple knows what they’re doing, that’s enough.”
“Yes, you’re right. I also have a good impression of that girl. She seems like a sweet child. My earlier words weren’t meant to imply anything—I was just sighing over the situation.”
“That girl clearly comes from a good background. Despite the distance, she came alone to find our Xiao Han. That shows she’s loyal and devoted. If anything, our family got the better end of the deal.”
With one thing after another happening tonight, Qi Yuanhua’s mind was a mess. But after talking it over with his wife, his thoughts gradually cleared.
He now had a clearer idea of how to handle the challenges ahead.
“Yes, we’re the lucky ones.” Shen Yuerong smiled.
Just then, the couple heard a noise and immediately stood up, guessing that the two youngsters had returned.
Sure enough, under the moonlight, the figures of Qi Han and Qin Tianru came into view.
Shen Yuerong stepped forward to greet them. “Is everything alright?”
Seeing his parents still sitting in the parlor, Qi Han frowned. “Father, Mother, why haven’t you gone to bed yet?”
“Couldn’t sleep. How did it go? Everything go smoothly?” Qi Yuanhua asked worriedly.
Qi Han answered solemnly, “Don’t worry, everything went smoothly. Those valuable pieces of timber have all been hidden away. No one will find them.”
“That’s good to hear.”
Hearing this, Qi Yuanhua felt somewhat relieved. The most valuable possessions in their home were the rare woods stored in the warehouse.
As for how the two young people had moved and hidden them, after his earlier conversation with his wife, he wisely refrained from asking further.
Shen Yuerong took Qin Tianru’s hand and said warmly, “Huanhuan, I’ve already prepared a room for you. It’s a bit rushed tonight, so I didn’t have time to decorate it properly. For now, just make do, and tomorrow I’ll fix it up nicely for you.”
A young lady’s room should be elegantly furnished, and the guest room’s current setup was a bit too simple. After all, Huanhuan was the eldest daughter-in-law of the Qi family’s second branch—she couldn’t be treated like an ordinary guest.
Feeling the warmth in her words, Qin Tianru smiled, her dimples showing faintly.
“It’s fine, Auntie. No need to go to so much trouble. I’m not that particular.”
Seeing his mother about to say more, Qi Han quickly interjected, “Mother, it’s late. You should both get some rest. We’ll need our energy—there’s still work to do tomorrow.”
