Chapter 13
Song Ruan and Yang Bin followed the sound and came to the big banyan tree in front of the village.
It used to be a lively place where adults enjoyed the cool air and children played, but now it was filled with a sad smell of death.
Two people died last night.
The reason was that there was a landslide on a hill on the road leading to the town, and the unlucky people who passed by were buried alive.
When Song Ruan saw the corpse covered with cloth, she felt the blood in her body freeze. It was the same scene in her dream, but the person lying there was her father.
Song Ruan walked forward tremblingly, trying to uncover the cloth covering her face.
A thin, dark old woman jumped out from behind her, but she was one step faster than her.
After seeing the face clearly, Song Ruan breathed a sigh of relief. It was not her father.
She held the big hand of the man beside her: “You are so kind to believe me.”
Yang Bin didn’t say anything, just stroked the palm of her hand.
The old woman kneeling on the ground burst into tears: “My son! How can I live if you are gone…”
The thin and dark old woman cried for a long time. Her already wrinkled face seemed to have aged ten years in an instant, which was really moving.
Song Ruan really didn’t like this kind of scene, so she took Yang Bin’s hand and left.
Song Ruan returned home with a gloomy look. Song’s mother was in the kitchen. She poked her head out and said, “Where have you been so early in the morning? Get ready for breakfast.”
It is the slack season during the farming season, and the family does not have to go to work, so they all eat breakfast at home.
Song Ruan sat at the dining table, elbows slightly bent, chin supported by palms, and said listlessly: “Mom, do you know that there was a landslide on the road to town last night, and someone was killed. Now they are waiting for their family to claim the body at the entrance of the village.”
“What?!” Ye Hongmei brought the dish to the dining table, “I was wondering why I felt there was some noise outside last night.”
Song Ruan raised her head: “Mom, this is not the point. The point is, if our dad listened to grandma and went to town overnight, it might be our dad who was killed.”
“Puh, puh, puh! The child doesn’t know how to speak, hurry up and spit and tell the story again.” Ye Hongmei glared at her daughter, “May your father be safe and live a long life.”
Her husband is her God, and she dare not even think about such a thing.
Song Ruan snorted and said, “Yes, my father will live a long life.”
As she said this, she stood up to help her mother serve the food, and took the opportunity to put some Yuquan water in it.
…
“Baoguo, help, help…”
While the family was having dinner, they were talking about this matter when they heard cries of grief and humiliation outside the yard.
Everyone put down their bowls and chopsticks and prepared to go out to take a look. However, the courtyard door was not locked, and the man outside pushed the door open with a loud noise.
It’s her milk.
Song Baoguo exclaimed: “Mom, what’s wrong with you?”
It’s no wonder that Song Baoguo was surprised, it’s just that Liu Cuihua’s current image is a bit eye-catching.
His head was like a chicken coop, his face was scratched with several bloody marks, and his clothes were torn to tatters.
“Who beat you up like this?”
When asked this question, Liu Cuihua immediately expressed her grievances.
“It’s Baozhu’s mother-in-law, Chen Chunhua. Chen Chunhua is crazy. My dear Baoguo, you have to help me.”
“Okay, Mom, please sit down and talk slowly.” Song Baoguo brought a stool to Liu Cuihua.
Liu Cuihua sat down at the table and was about to speak when she saw the breakfast on the table. Her eyes widened immediately: “Ye Hongmei, you spendthrift, how can you be so incapable of living?”
Looking at the pancakes on the table, a plate of pea sprouts and wild mushrooms, you can vaguely see some pickled pork shredded into strips.
“It’s the off-season now. Look who’s eating so well?”
No one said anything when they heard this. After all, they had recently been instilled with the idea by their younger sister that the body was the capital of the revolution, so the cost of food at home had skyrocketed recently.
Moreover, Yang Bin would always hunt some wild game every now and then, and the food at home was really very different from before. They even felt that breakfast like this was normal now.
Ye Hongmei was still muttering in her heart: If I let her daughter make breakfast, it would only be more luxurious than this, okay?
However, I don’t know why, although the meals at home have been good recently, the food is consumed slower than before.
Liu Cuihua spat: “Why don’t you bring me some dishes and chopsticks, you have no sense of judgment, you spendthrift.”
Song Ruan and the others are not masochists, so they would ignore someone like her who can’t even talk properly.
Only her father, Song Baoguo, obediently went to get the bowl and chopsticks.
As soon as the food entered her mouth, Liu Cuihua’s eyes lit up, and then she immediately sped up her eating speed, sweeping away all the food on the table like a whirlwind, without caring whether others were full or not.
If she ate like this, no one else could eat. Song Ruan didn’t feel bad about the food being ruined, but she felt bad about her precious Yuquan water being eaten by her.
After Liu Cuihua had eaten her fill, she remembered the purpose of coming here and explained the whole story of today’s events. Although she avoided the important points, everyone was still able to roughly restore the context of the events.
It turned out that last night, they couldn’t find anyone willing to go to the town overnight to redeem the captured Song Baojia.
So she went to the next village to ask her youngest daughter Song Baozhu for help. Then, her brother-in-law, Song Baozhu’s husband, rushed to the town overnight, but happened to encounter a landslide and was buried alive. When he was dug out, he was already dead.
Look, Chen Chunhua, who came to identify the body early in the morning, went to find Liu Cuihua immediately after her grief, demanding that Liu Cuihua pay for her son’s life.
“Can you blame me for this? The landslide was not caused by me. If anyone is to blame, it should be God. I don’t want anything to happen to my brother-in-law, but that crazy woman hit me.”
Liu Cuihua was still feeling indignant.
Song Ruan really admired her grandmother’s shamelessness. Even at this time, she didn’t have the slightest feeling of remorse.
Song Ruan raised a hint of sneer at the corner of her lips: “Grandma, have you ever thought about what you would do if your second uncle was called by his mother-in-law to do something and died accidentally?”
Liu Cuihua flew into a rage upon hearing this and shouted, “You money-loser, you are cursing your uncle. You…”
Before she could finish her words, someone outside the yard spoke louder than her.
“Liu Cuihua, you damn old woman, did you get the money? Why did it take so long?”
I heard his voice before I saw him.
When the person came closer, Song Ruan was surprised to realize that this person was the thin and dark woman who appeared at the entrance of the village in the morning.
Song Baoguo looked at his mother in confusion: “Mom, what happened?”
Liu Cuihua’s eyes flickered.
Seeing this, Chen Chunhua took over the conversation: “Why? Didn’t Liu Cuihua tell you that she killed my son, and now she wants to pay compensation to my family, or she will have to pay with her life. She said that her eldest son’s family has money and will definitely give it to her.”
Song Baoguo turned his head and saw his mother’s evasive eyes, and he knew that what the old woman said was true.
Song Baoguo’s heart sank.
