Chapter 40 – She’s Alive
“Uncle Song, you can eat food recklessly, but you can’t speak recklessly! How is it my fault that Auntie Song died?”
“If you hadn’t brought back that meat from the hunter’s house, would my wife be dead?!”
“I didn’t make your family eat the meat I brought back. You forced your way into the meal yourselves. How can you blame me when something went wrong?” Wen Lan was furious and about to argue further with the unreasonable man when she saw the hunter walk over to Auntie Song like there was no one else around. He squatted down and placed his fingers on her carotid artery.
“She’s not dead,” he said casually, then stood up and looked at Wen Lan.
Not dead? Wen Lan rushed over and mimicked Xuan Yue’s movements, feeling the woman’s carotid artery.
Sure enough, beneath the fat neck of the woman, her artery was still faintly pulsing.
Wen Lan leaned down to listen to the woman’s chest.
Her heartbeat was there. When she checked her breath, it was nearly gone.
What’s going on? Wen Lan frowned as she examined Auntie Song’s plump face. It was now tinged with a dark bluish hue, and her tiny eyes were showing their whites like a dead fish’s.
Wen Lan seemed to understand. She lifted Auntie Song’s head and tried to pry open her mouth.
“Hey, what are you doing?” the Song family man shouted, pointing at Wen Lan. “Let me tell you this—don’t think you can get away with not paying compensation by lying! My wife’s not even breathing—how could she be alive?! Pay up, now!”
Wen Lan ignored him and continued working.
Soon, she managed to pry Auntie Song’s mouth open—and immediately regretted it. The stench was unbearable, and Wen Lan nearly gagged.
But a life was on the line. She pushed through and peered inside the woman’s mouth.
In her throat, she saw a dark, lumpy object stuck there.
Wen Lan instantly understood. She dragged over a long bench and said to Xuan Yue, “Hunter big brother, can you give me a hand and lift Auntie Song onto this bench?”
“What are you planning to do?”
“She’s choking. I want to dislodge whatever’s stuck in her throat.”
Xuan Yue thought for a moment, then pushed Wen Lan aside. With a single movement, he bent down and, with one hand, effortlessly lifted Auntie Song—who weighed nearly two hundred pounds—and placed her on the bench like she weighed nothing.
The surrounding villagers gasped loudly in amazement.
“Wow! Lin family’s son-in-law is so strong!”
“Yeah, Auntie Song weighs at least one or two hundred pounds…”
Even Hehua and Muwu stood there in shock, mouths forming perfect circles.
Wen Lan, who had already seen the hunter carve up a pig with his bare hands, wasn’t particularly surprised—but she was still secretly impressed by his strength.
“He doesn’t look like some musclebound warrior, but he’s ridiculously strong. Truly, you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
As she thought this, she couldn’t help but study the hunter more closely.
Aside from the unkempt beard, his features were actually quite handsome—especially his eyebrows and eyes, which carried an air of nobility and dominance.
His physique was lean and powerful. Standing among the villagers, he resembled a crane in a flock of chickens—truly set apart from the rest.
Just as Wen Lan was admiring him with a silly “auntie smile,” Xuan Yue’s ice-cold voice broke the moment.
“Hey, what are you spacing out for? Weren’t you going to save someone?”
Oh, right. She nearly forgot what she was doing.
Snapping back to reality, Wen Lan walked up to Auntie Song, placed her hand on the woman’s back, and gave a firm downward push.
A series of gurgling sounds came from Auntie Song’s throat. Then her body trembled violently, and she suddenly let out a loud “BLEGH” and vomited out a dark, unidentifiable lump of meat.
“She’s awake! She’s awake!” The crowd surged forward, marveling at the scene.
Auntie Song took a deep breath and collapsed onto the ground like a stone. Her husband and their son Song Dabao rushed to her side.
“Abao’s mother!” the man cried, shaking her.
“Mom!” Dabao shouted.
Auntie Song took a few labored breaths, patted her own chest, and said hoarsely, “I almost suffocated to death…”
