Chapter 21: Those Who Time-Travel Are All Powerful and Not to Be Trifled With
Wen Yanyan watched motionlessly, observing the source of the sound.
After a while, a furry, four-legged little creature tumbled out of the grass in front of her, its chubby body covered in leaves and burrs.
Hmm?
Was this an animal cub?
Wen Yanyan’s lips curled into a slight smile. She particularly liked small animals; she had even kept a particularly beautiful large standard poodle in her previous life.
But the thought of her pet immediately brought a pang of sadness, her eyes welling up. She would never see it again.
She reached out to touch it, but immediately retracted her hand. No, she couldn’t touch it. What if its mother was nearby and attacked her?
Wen Yanyan decided not to go any further. The cub was here, so its mother couldn’t be far away.
She wouldn’t pick any more mushrooms; she would return the way she came. She couldn’t risk it.
However, after walking a few steps, she discovered that the little creature was following her, tumbling along the way, and she couldn’t help but feel compassion.
So she said,
“Little guy, don’t follow me. If you go too far, your mother won’t be able to find you, and she’ll be worried.”
Wen Yanyan turned around and continued walking. After walking a while, she looked back again, feeling somewhat helpless because it was still following her.
“Okay, little guy, if you can follow me all the way down the mountain, it means we’re destined, and I’ll keep you.”
This time, however, she deliberately slowed her pace, afraid the little creature wouldn’t be able to keep up.
Every time she looked back, she saw the little creature following her, taking unsteady steps. They were almost at the bottom of the mountain. She looked into the distance and didn’t see any animals following the cub.
She bent down and picked it up.
Wen Yanyan immediately recognized it as a male wolf cub, just over a month old.
Its fur was brown, its eyes black, and it had a white patch on its forehead. Because it was so young, its ears hadn’t stood up yet, drooping on either side.
“Hey, little guy, how did you get out here alone? Where’s your mother?”
She held the cub’s two front paws.
“”Woof~”, “Woof~”
Unexpectedly, it responded, tilting its head and stretching its neck, its voice soft and milky.
“Ah, you can’t find your mother?”
Wen Yanyan didn’t understand dog language, so she interpreted it as she pleased.
“Woof~”
The little creature cried out again.
“Sigh, you keep saying ‘woof woof,’ and I don’t understand. Are you hungry?”
Wen Yanyan touched its small belly; it was empty.
But she only had sugar balls in her pocket, no food for the little creature. “How about you come home with me, and I’ll get you something to eat?”
“Woof~~”
This time, the little creature’s voice was noticeably longer. She was sure the little creature agreed.
“Okay, then I’ll take you.”
Wen Yanyan decided to take it away. First, it was so small, and it had followed her for so long. She couldn’t find the mother wolf, so she couldn’t just leave it.
If she didn’t take care of it, the little creature would starve to death.
Wen Yanyan had picked few mushrooms today; she could hold them all in one hand, and carried the cub in the other as she continued down the mountain, saying,
“Little guy, if anyone asks me on the way what you are, I’ll say you’re a puppy. You mustn’t bark. If they know you’re a wolf cub, they’ll beat you.”
She just said it casually, but unexpectedly, the little creature let out a woof.
Wen Yanyan was surprised.
Huh?
This little guy seemed to understand human speech and kept responding to her. Could it be a spirit animal?
To her surprise, she suddenly thought of a possibility: could this wolf cub also be a time traveler?
Her pet from her previous life, Big Ball?
Wen Yanyan felt a shiver run down her spine at the thought.
…
Sure enough, when she carried the little creature into the military dependents’ compound, Sister Ping, who had gossiped about her a few days ago, saw her and asked,
“Yanzi, what are you carrying?”
Wen Yanyan said she had seen a puppy shivering from hunger on the street in town and had taken it home.
“Yanzi, did you ask your Nan Tuan? What if he doesn’t like dogs? You two might fight.”
Sister Ping reminded her.
“Ah?”
Wen Yanyan was enlightened. Ah, yes, how could she forget him? She was married, and she had Nan Jue at home.
What if he didn’t like keeping dogs?
But the little creature was already home. She couldn’t send it back to the mountain. Besides, she really wanted a pet to keep her company.
“I’ll keep it for now, and we’ll see later.”
Wen Yanyan hurried home with the wolf cub. After returning home, she immediately washed the rice and cooked some rice porridge, sticky and thick. She poured a small bowl and let it cool before feeding it to the little creature.
She squatted on the ground, watching it eat so happily, happier than she was herself. She reached out and touched its little head.
“Little guy, you must be good, or Nan Jue will dislike you when he sees you being naughty.”
“Woof~”
The little creature stuck out its little tongue and licked its lips, then cried out again.
She was amused.
“You little thing, you’re quite good at responding, not missing a single one.”
Wen Yanyan looked at its tail.
“By the way, little guy, I’ve been thinking about something. It might be a little cruel, but since you’re a wolf cub, the mountain is your home. Humans won’t accept you, so I can only raise you as a dog. But your tail is different from a dog’s. When you grow up, outsiders will recognize you as a wolf at a glance, and then you’ll leave me. If you don’t want to leave, I’ll have to dock your tail. Do you agree?”
Wen Yanyan had been thinking about this problem on her way back.
This time, the little creature didn’t whine. It raised its little paw to wipe its face, then stamped its little paw, tilting its head to look at her.
“If you don’t speak, I’ll take it as agreement. By the way, I’ll tell you a secret that no one else knows: I’m a doctor, a highly skilled doctor. Docking your tail is a minor surgical procedure for me.”
She knew that docking a puppy’s tail was best done early; the later it is done, the more suffering it causes. It was urgent that she do it now.
“By the way, let me ask you again, are you a time traveler?”
Wen Yanyan wasn’t at ease. If this wolf cub was really a time traveler like her, wouldn’t it retaliate if she docked its tail?
Those who time-travel are all powerful and not to be trifled with.
