Chapter 40: This Time, I Won’t Miss Her Again
Fu Changqing let out a long sigh. “I’ll be more careful in the future.”
“You always say that. Let me give you some advice: Let go of the past, get married, have children, and live a happy life. That’s what your aunt and uncle want to see.”
“Shut up,” Fu Changqing snapped, “Focus on your work.”
Jiang Bogen sighed and said nothing more. After a while, he spoke again. “Okay, be careful not to get the wound wet or do strenuous exercise for the next few days.”
Lu Yunshang turned to see that Fu Changqing’s wound was bandaged. Jiang Bogen was cleaning up the bloody cotton. He put the cotton and Fu Changqing’s shirt into a black plastic bag and tied it up.
“Miss Lu,” Fu Changqing looked at Lu Yunshang, “you should go back. You’ve been here a long time; they must be worried.”
Lu Yunshang frowned. “But, you…”
“Miss Lu, please go. I’ll stay with him tonight. You can’t help here.”
Hearing Jiang Bogen, Lu Yunshang gave up on staying to watch over him. Jiang Bogen walked her to the elevator and pressed the button. As Lu Yunshang stepped into the elevator, Jiang Bogen suddenly blocked the doors with his hand.
“Miss Lu, my cousin really cares about you.”
Lu Yunshang’s heart stirred.
Jiang Bogen said earnestly, “You’re the first woman to enter his room, the first woman to see him injured. He let you see his wound, showing how important you are to him.”
Lu Yunshang was astonished.
Jiang Bogen looked at her, pleading. “Miss Lu, please help him. Help him forget the past. I really hope he can live a normal life like everyone else.”
“What happened to Mr. Fu in the past?” Lu Yunshang thought that if she was to help, she needed to know what happened to him.
“This…” Jiang Bogen looked troubled. “Sorry, I can’t say. But I can tell you that if he clings to the past, he might get hurt again, even risk his life.”
Lu Yunshang’s heart jolted. “I understand. Doctor Jiang, if I have the chance, I will try to persuade Mr. Fu.”
“Thank you,” Jiang Bogen released the elevator doors, waiting for them to close before slowly returning to the room.
“She’s gone?” Fu Changqing asked.
“Yes,” Jiang Bogen took out a pack of cigarettes, glanced at Fu Changqing, then put them away, muttering, “Are you in love with her?”
Fu Changqing remained silent.
Jiang Bogenwalked to his bedside. “You love her, don’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t let her see you injured. Don’t you want to be with her? If you give up revenge, you can marry her, have children, and live happily.”
“Do you know what you’re saying?” Fu Changqing roared, his voice filled with anger. “How can I forget the blood feud? For ten years, every night when I close my eyes, I see my parents being killed in front of me.”
“Heaven spared me to avenge them.”
His tone was resolute. “One day, I will kill Black Panther with my own hands.”
Jiang Bogen gritted his teeth and said sullenly, “What about her? What are you going to do with her? She’s so excellent, and now she’s divorced. Aren’t you afraid another man will take advantage of the situation?”
“I’m not afraid. Marrying Hanzhou was a mistake.”
Speaking of this, Fu Changqing felt a pang of pain. A year ago, he received news that Black Panther appeared in the UK, so he immediately went to track him down. But he couldn’t find him for a whole month.
He returned to the US, only to learn that she had married his cousin. He was heartbroken and often used business trips as an excuse to go abroad, afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself if he saw her in the Fu family.
Upon learning of her divorce, he immediately flew back. He vowed that this time, he would never miss her again.
Huzi rushed into the room, defeated. “Boss, sorry, he got away again.”
Fu Changqing sighed. “Send a few people to secretly search. He was injured in the abdomen; he might still be in Huacheng.”
“Yes,” Huzi nodded.
Fu Changqing thought for a moment. “Send two more people to secretly protect Miss Lu. Don’t let Black Panther know about her.”
“Yes, Boss.”
Jiang Bogen opened his mouth, then closed it. He knew Fu Changqing’s personality; he couldn’t be persuaded. He could only pray for his safety.
Lu Yunshang’s mind was a mess. She didn’t know how she got back to the private room. Liu Jingting and Tang Tang rushed over.
“We were about to call the police! What call took so long? I looked everywhere and couldn’t find you. Where did you go?” Liu Jingting was agitated.
“The lobby downstairs,” Lu Yunshang casually said.
Liu Jingting was doubtful. “Did you really need to go that far? Whose call was it? What happened?”
Lu Yunshang forced a smile. “Nothing serious. Just chatting with a friend.”
“Which friend? Don’t you only have Tang Tang as a friend? Do I know this friend?”
“Okay, why are you asking so many questions? I’m back, aren’t I?”
Lu Yunshang looked around. “Where are Fu Hanzhou and the others?”
“They went back to the next room. Xiao Nianzhen came,” Tang Tang said, “A pregnant woman still comes to such a smoky place.”
Lu Yunshang frowned thoughtfully.
Liu Jingting waved his hand. “She doesn’t look like a pregnant woman at all.”
Tang Tang winked. “Maybe it’s a fake pregnancy? To marry into a wealthy family, they pretend to be pregnant. That’s how they do it in TV dramas.”
Lu Yunshang patted Tang Tang’s back. “How long can a fake pregnancy be hidden? I saw the pregnancy test; it can’t be faked.”
Liu Jingting was bored. “Okay, let’s not talk about these depressing things. Let’s drink.”
Lu Yunshang took the glass from Liu Jingting, clinked glasses with him, and took a sip, her thoughts drifting to Fu Changqing. Who fired the gun? What was the past that Jiang Bogen mentioned? Why did Fu Changqing have so many secrets? Why reveal them to her? Was it true, as Jiang Bogen said, that Fu Changqing cared about her?
That night, Lu Yunshang couldn’t sleep, whether due to alcohol or Fu Changqing.
The next day, she went to work with dark circles under her eyes. Her colleagues were also tired, and Liu Jingting was listless. He told Lu Yunshang that Secretary Liu called, saying that Mr. Fu had an urgent business trip, but he signed the contracts beforehand and would send someone to deliver them.
Lu Yunshang said, “Okay.” She went to the tea room to make instant coffee.
Her mind was filled with Fu Changqing, wondering if he was feeling better. She wanted to call him but was afraid of disturbing his rest. He certainly wasn’t on a business trip; he probably said that to avoid attention.
Remembering his instructions, she didn’t tell anyone, not even Liu Jingting.
After finishing her coffee, Tiantian came to the tea room. “Mr. Liu wants you to sign the contract.”
Lu Yunshang went to Liu Jingting’s office. Huzi handed her a file bag. “The Boss said Miss Lu must review it personally.”
Lu Yunshang nodded, opened the bag, and saw two agreements. She gave the business-to-business agreement to Liu Jingting to review and checked the non-disclosure agreement for the acquisition of the Lu family’s company.
Fu Changqing was thoughtful. She signed without hesitation, keeping a copy and giving the other to Huzi. “Please thank Mr. Fu for me. I’ll treat him to dinner another time.”
Liu Jingting also signed, keeping a copy and giving the other to Huzi.
After sending Huzi away, Lu Yunshang returned to the tea room to make more coffee. As she opened a packet, her phone rang—an unknown number.
She answered. “Hello, this is Lu Yunshang.”
“Sister Yunshang, this is Xiao Nianzhen. I’m at the coffee shop downstairs. Are you free? Can we chat for a while?”
