Is It Too Late To Cancel The Wedding? Ch 08

Chapter 08: “You’re starting to reminisce too.”

A few minutes later, Jiang Yao still reluctantly got into Duan Zhuxian’s car.

Although the marriage alliance between the two families was a matter of mutual benefit, with neither side owing the other, his family had not yet completely overcome their difficulties and were still in a stage of one-sided taking.

If he were to upset the old man, his whole family would not be able to bear the consequences.

It wasn’t worth it.

He had never met Duan Zhuxian’s grandfather, but a tycoon who could build up such a capital giant like Hua Yan from scratch must have a firm grip.

Jiang Yao was still seriously analysing the pros and cons of cohabitation when he suddenly heard Duan Zhuxian ask him, “Have you had dinner?”

He turned his face to stare out the car window and said stiffly, “I have.”

Duan Zhuxian said to assistant Lin, who was driving, “Go straight to the next destination.”

The car followed the gradually dimming horizon, left the science park, and entered a familiar bluish-gray road.

“Wait.” Jiang Yao looked outside to confirm for a moment, then turned his head to the man browsing his laptop beside him, “This direction seems wrong, doesn’t it?”

Duan Zhuxian uttered a sound of agreement, but his focused gaze still on the screen: “Let’s go to your place first to get your luggage.”

“?” Jiang Yao was taken aback, “So, Mr. Duan has arranged everything clearly for me?”

“It’s just a trivial matter.”

Duan Zhuxian threw out four words indifferently.

“Fine, consider yourself sensible.”

Jiang Yao said through gritted teeth and couldn’t help but glare at Duan Zhuxian, catching the curve of his lips, which seemed like an illusion overlaid by light and shadow.

From the company to his residential area, they had to pass through a bustling market. The mall ahead seemed to be hosting a celebrity event, particularly crowded, and the car moved and stopped, causing Jiang Yao to become somewhat irritated.

Duan Zhuxian beside him still maintained a composed posture, as if nothing in this world could disturb him.

Jiang Yao curled his lips, unsurprised.

Back in high school, during a sports festival where everyone was happily participating, only Duan Zhuxian was reclusively avoiding the world, holding a foreign book, and sat in a secluded corner.

Later, someone secretly took a photo of him, which was passed around like a treasure, almost worn out from handling.

Jiang Yao also has a copy on his hard drive, unclear of its provenance, and it’s blurred as if a thin mist has veiled the features.

A could see was a broad-shouldered and long-legged young man, with his right hand supporting a book and his left wrist resting casually on his bent knee. He was clad in a crisp white school uniform, like a slender blade sheathed in its scabbard, exuding an indifference to the mundane world, the very epitome of ‘aloofness’.

The journey was gradually prolonged by the evening rush hour.

Jiang Yao was bored and chatted idly on WeChat, then he pulled out a tablet from his bag, propped up his legs, and looked at the report handed over by his secretary.

Who doesn’t know how to put on airs?

Jiang Yao snorted disdainfully.

Although Duan Zhuxian was a standard elite, having returned from studying abroad at a prestigious school, he took the position of vice president of Hua Yan at a young age.

But Jiang Yao was not a do-nothing scion either; he just wasn’t very interested in the business field, which was why, after graduating from B University, he took a more conventional path.

Moreover, he had an older brother above him; the family business didn’t fall to him to inherit, at most he was just a support person.

The rest of the way passed in silence.

The black Bentley silently passed through the congested section, and the speed finally returned to normal, then stopped midway in front of a hotel.

Assistant Lin, who was in charge of driving, got out of the car to retrieve client documents for Duan Zhuxian.

The car’s interior lights were on, which was bright and cramped. The gentle halo filled the clean space, silently blocking the night that was gathering outside the car window, making the world shrink to just enough space for the two of them.

Jiang Yao gazed ahead, suddenly coughed lightly, breaking the delicate silence.

“How much do you remember about that night?”

If they want to cooperate smoothly in the future, they must overcome this hurdle.

Jiang Yao asked casually, but his sidelong glance was elusive, lingering on the pale lips on his right side until they slowly uttered two words: “Everything.”

The air froze for a moment.

“From now on, forget it all!”

Jiang Yao turned his head towards Duan Zhuxian and commanded in a gruff voice.

“I’m afraid that might be difficult.”

Duan Zhuxian also looked at him, his tone neutral, as if stating an obvious fact.

Jiang Yao knew Duan Zhuxian wouldn’t cooperate, he squinted his eyes, and asked, “What do you mean?”

“It means unforgettable,” Said Duan Zhuxian, his gaze slightly lowered, and lightly hooked both his legs back and forth towards Jiang Yao.

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.” Jiang Yao’s presence weakened a bit, then he raised his fist in a threatening manner, “Anyway, I’ve forgotten it all, and you’re not allowed to remember it either, or you’ll regret it!”

Duan Zhuxian remained silent, his eyebrows twitching slightly as he looked at the young man in front of him.

Until the arrogance in those peach blossom eyes gradually turned into evasion, and the overly fair cheeks slowly stained with unusual crimson colour.

After a while, Duan Zhuxian spoke softly, “Your reaction back then was much more honest than now.”

Jiang Yao: “?”

Duan Zhuxian: “Your emotions were all over your face, and always complaining it wasn’t enough…”

“Shut up!”

Jiang Yao couldn’t hold back anymore, almost panicking as he hushed.

Could this person be any more indecent?

And how could he possibly complain it wasn’t enough…

It was as if the memory had a physical sensation, and as soon as Jiang Yao started to recall the details, his scalp began to tingle, his heart leaped high, then fell back weightlessly, sinking into some kind of shameful aftertaste.

He pursed his lips tightly, trying to fight against the memory, forcing himself to have some sense of being a victim. As his gaze swept past the corner of his eye, he inadvertently caught Duan Zhuxian’s seemingly amused expression.

Jiang Yao felt a bit guilty, then he said irritably, “Mr. Duan, are you amused by your own fabricated story?”

“See,” Duan Zhuxian’s gaze swept over the faint red of Jiang Yao’s ear and added, “you’re starting to reminisce too.”
