Chapter 8 – System Rewards

Hearing Liu Shuning’s words, Lu Fengnian immediately let go of the man under his foot and lunged forward to block the old woman’s path. “Hand over the child!”

The old woman realized the situation had turned against her. She clutched the child tightly, a flash of panic in her eyes, though she still tried to talk tough. “This is my biological grandson! Don’t talk nonsense!”

“Ma’am, would you dare let everyone see the child in your arms? There’s been such a commotion in the carriage, yet the child is sleeping so soundly. You must’ve drugged him. And just now, you were the first to try to make a move on me. I bet there’s plenty of sedatives laced into the money and train ticket you tried to hand me.”

Liu Shuning gave Lu Fengnian a look, signaling him to sneak up on the woman and grab the child while she was distracted.

Lu Fengnian understood immediately and slowly moved behind the woman while her attention was focused on Liu Shuning.

Just as he was about to reach the child, the woman suddenly pulled a dagger from her waist and snarled viciously, “Don’t come any closer or I’ll kill this child!”

Worried the child might be hurt, Liu Shuning quietly took a stone out from her space and flicked it with a swift motion. The stone shot out like a meteor and struck the woman’s wrist.

“Ouch!” she cried as pain surged through her hand, and the dagger clattered to the floor.

She glared at Liu Shuning with venomous eyes. “You… it’s all your fault! You ruined everything!”

With that, she flung the child toward the floor and charged at Liu Shuning.

But Liu Shuning dodged swiftly to the side, avoiding the attack with ease.

Behind the woman, Lu Fengnian moved like the wind and rushed forward just in time to catch the falling child securely in his arms.

Seeing the child safe, Liu Shuning finally let out a breath of relief. She had originally intended to play the gentle damsel role, but given the situation, she had no choice but to act decisively.

With a step forward, she grabbed the old woman’s arm, twisted it forcefully, eliciting a pained scream as the woman lost her balance.

With a push, Liu Shuning threw her harshly to the ground. The woman tried to get up, but Liu Shuning pinned her down by the shoulder with one foot.

At that moment, Liu Yang and Chen Gang arrived with the train police.

“What’s going on here?”

“Hello, I’m an active-duty soldier from the northeast military unit. This is my officer ID. These two are human traffickers. The child in my arms was kidnapped by them,” Lu Fengnian said, showing his credentials.

“Deputy Battalion Commander Lu, thank you! We were negligent today. We’ll take custody of these traffickers right away!”

“Is there a doctor on this train? The child has been drugged and is running a fever!” Lu Fengnian’s voice was filled with rare urgency. The child looked only two or three years old. If the fever wasn’t brought down, it could cause permanent damage.

“We’ll go to the broadcast room and ask them to announce a call for a doctor,” Liu Yang said, pulling Chen Gang as they rushed off. They hadn’t helped catch the traffickers, so they had to at least help find a doctor.

The train police tied up the traffickers and planned to turn them over to the public security bureau at the next station.

“Lu Fengnian, give the child to me first. Go get some warm water, and I’ll wipe him down to help lower the fever.” Liu Shuning hadn’t intended to get involved at first, but seeing the child’s flushed face softened her heart.

She planned to secretly feed the child some fever medicine while wiping him down. If only she had Meilin (ibuprofen for children), it would be better—fewer side effects.

Unfortunately, she only had Analgin, leftover from when she had a fever a few days ago.

“You two take care of the child for now. We’ll escort the traffickers to the service car and find a doctor.”

The train police quickly took the traffickers away, and Lu Fengnian went to fetch a basin of warm water.
