Teacher Jiang walked into Class 3 and, following the usual practice, counted the number of students.
Seeing that every child was present, Teacher Jiang began, “Today’s first class is singing. Has anyone learned the song I taught a few days ago?”
In this era, nurseries were different from kindergartens in later years.
In later years, kindergarten teachers started teaching some knowledge, but in this era, nursery teachers taught very little, basically just taking care of the children.
Since the two brothers had just arrived and the content was different every day, they didn’t know about singing.
So, they obediently listened to the other children talking.
“Teacher, I can sing.” One of the girls, Sun Hongying, who had two ponytails, raised her hand.
She was wearing clean clothes without patches, and her little face was rosy, clearly a pampered child at home.
“Then, let our classmate Sun Hongying sing the new song we learned, ‘Finding Friends,'” Teacher Jiang said, applauding and encouraging.
Seeing this, the other children also applauded.
Soon, the classroom of Class 3 was filled with the enthusiastic applause of the children.
In fact, when it comes to creating an atmosphere, children are the most active.
Sun Hongying stood up, and her clear voice rang out amidst the applause: “Looking, looking, looking for friends, finding a good friend, salute, shake hands, you are my good friend…”
As the two brothers listened, one of them quietly said to the other, “This song is really nice. I want to learn it and sing it to Mom at home.”
Er Bao, who had never attended nursery before, could only sing one line: “A big river, the waves are wide…” which he had heard from the educated youth.
Yi Bao nodded. “Hmm.”
Er Bao asked, “Will the teacher teach me?”
Yi Bao replied, “I don’t know either.”
After some thought, he said, “We have cakes. We can give the teacher cakes and exchange them for lessons.”
In his understanding, maybe exchanging things could work.
Er Bao nodded. “Hmm.”
San Bao also nodded. “Hmm.”
Sun Hongying’s song ended amidst the many children singing along.
Teacher Jiang praised, “Sun Hongying did great, singing the song so well. Here’s a little red flower as a reward. Next, we’ll teach another new song called ‘Little Swallow.’ Have you all seen swallows before?”
“I have seen them.”
“I have seen them too.”
“Can swallows sing too?”
The children were curious.
“Of course…” Teacher Jiang replied, “Now I’ll sing a line, and you sing a line. Little swallow, wearing a flower dress, comes here every spring…”
Er Bao wanted to learn the song. He sang the loudest and most earnestly.
Teacher Jiang looked at him and liked that he enjoyed singing and had a loud voice, finding it very interesting.
He had originally thought that these two new students were very introverted, but now it seemed that the twin brother, Lin Haizhi, was also very lively, and he seemed to really like singing.
Thinking about the Day activities in the army, he wondered if Lin Haizhi would be willing to participate.
There was no way around it; apart from Sun Hongying, the children in their class were not very good at singing.
It was rare to have someone with a loud voice and a serious attitude, so Teacher Jiang was very happy.
Children have short memories, so they could only memorise a few lines of a song in one class.
After the bell rang for the end of class, the singing class was over.
As soon as the singing class ended, the children ran to the classroom, because the next class was to go outside to play games, including a tug-of-war competition, where the winning children would also receive a little red flower.
The children were very motivated by the prospect of winning the flower.
But with three more children in Class 3, the numbers had to be redistributed.
Yu Bo, as the team captain, came to find the two brothers while the other children ran out. “Twins, which team do you want to join? Bella’s team or Qin Wei’s team?”
“The twins said they would join my team alone.” At this time, Bella also ran in, eager to find her new teammates.
If Qin Wei’s team had two more people, their strength would increase.
Qin Wei, a chubby boy, saw Bella run into the classroom and followed suit, hearing them talking about the tug-of-war competition.
He also recruited people. “Twins, come to my team. I’ll treat you to some cookies.”
“We promised her. Each of us will go to a different team.” Er Bao almost called out his brother; he remembered that today he was the elder brother and his brother was the younger one.
Yu Bo pointed to Er Bao and asked, “Then, you two go to different sides. What about this little brother?”
Yi Bao said, “San Bao will stay with me.” He wanted to keep an eye on San Bao.
“Then, who will go to Bella’s team, and who will go to Qin Wei’s team?” Yu Bo asked again.
Yi Bao and Er Bao looked at each other, and Yi Bao said, “He will go to Qin Wei’s team, and Sanbao and I will go to Bella’s team.”
Compared to Erbao, who didn’t want to be on the same team as a girl, Yi Bao didn’t react as strongly, so he volunteered to go to Bella’s team.
Er Bao breathed a sigh of relief when he heard his brother’s decision.
Yu Bo said, “But this way, Bella’s team will have one extra person.” Since their class already had an extra person, he had planned to be the referee for the tug-of-war.
Now, with one team having one extra person and the other team having two extra people, the numbers were off.
However, Yu Bo quickly came up with a solution.
He decided not to be the referee and instead join Qin Wei’s team, making the numbers equal again.
“Students, what are you doing inside? Come out quickly; the tug-of-war is about to start.” Teacher Jiang saw that the children of Class 3 were scattered and called out, finding a few of them still inside the classroom.
“Coming.” Yu Bo responded, and the children quickly came out.
As soon as the two brothers came out, Da Mao and Tie Dan that were lying at the school gate started barking.
“Da Mao, Tie Dan…”
The two brothers heard their voices and waved at them.
Da Mao and Tie Dan barked even more excitedly. [Bark, bark, bark…]
Teacher Jiang saw that everyone was ready and clapped his hands, calling all the children of Class 3 over. “Okay, students, line up like you did in the previous tug-of-war competitions. Yu Bo, the team leader, have you arranged the teams for the two new students?”
“Teacher, the teams are arranged. Erbao is going to Qin Wei’s team, Yibao is going to Bella’s team.” Yubu said
Teacher Jiang nodded approvingly. “You’ve arranged it well. Now, let’s get ready… Everyone, hold the rope tightly…”
So, Er Bao went to Qin Wei’s team, and Yi Bao and Sanbao went to Bella’s team.
There was a boy in front of Er Bao, so he wasn’t afraid of bumping into the other team.
The last child in Bella’s team was also a boy. Yi Bao asked San Bao to stand in front of him, and he positioned himself at the back. “San Bao, hold the rope like this…” Yi Bao taught San Bao how to compete.
The boy in front turned around, showing a toothless smile. “Hold the rope tightly. When the game starts, you have to pull hard backward. Have you played tug-of-war before?”
“We played back in our hometown. We know how to play,” Yi Bao replied.
Teacher Jiang brought out the rope, with one end for Bella’s team to pull and the other for Qin Wei’s team.
These two children were the leaders, standing at the very front of their teams, and she was the referee today.
There were a total of four classes in the nursery, and each class had its tug-of-war day.
Today was Class 3’s turn, and children from other classes came out to watch. Some children had already started cheering for the teams they knew.
Teacher Jiang watched as both Bella’s team and Qin Wei’s team were ready. She cleared her throat and shouted, “1… 2… 3, get ready… start!”
And so, the children from both teams exerted their strength and began the tug-of-war.
“Go Bella’s team…”
“Go Qin Wei’s team…”
[Bark, bark, bark…]
The cheers of the children mixed with the barking of Da Mao and Tie Dan.
Children have no balance, so both teams started swaying back and forth from the beginning.
It didn’t take long for the result to come out.
Bella’s team won.
“We won…” The children jumped up and down.
Yi Bao and San Bao were also on Bella’s team, so they won too.
Although Er Bao didn’t have a little red flower, Yi Bao and San Bao did.
This meant that the two of them had two little red flowers, which made them even happier than if they had won individually.
“Brother, Bella was right. She really can win,” Er Bao’s eyes sparkled, thinking Bella was amazing.
“Yeah, next time, you’ll join Bella’s team, and I’ll take Sanbao to Qin Wei’s team,” Yibao said.
Er Bao asked, “Why don’t we both join Bella’s team? That way, we’ll have two little red flowers.”
Yi Bao replied, “What if Bella’s team loses next time?”
Er Bao thought about it and agreed, “Then, let’s listen to Brother.”
Teacher Jiang looked at the rosy-cheeked children and said, “Okay, everyone, line up and come to me to get your little red flowers. After that, rest well in the school until dismissal at noon.”
Upon hearing this, the children obediently lined up to receive their little red flowers.
As Yi Bao and San Bao received their little red flowers, Yi Bao took out all the little red flowers they had.
They had five little red flowers now.
“Brother, let’s go see what we can exchange them for,” Er Bao urged.
“Okay.”
The two of them ran into the classroom. Behind the classroom was a paper with drawings of things that could be exchanged.
Yes, drawings, because the children couldn’t read, so they could only use drawings.
Many other children followed Yi Bao and Erbao into the classroom to see what they could exchange for.
“Twins, what are you going to exchange for?” Bella, who had just won the tug-of-war, asked with a strong spirit.
“We only have five little red flowers. What can we exchange them for?” Yibao asked.
Bella replied, “Five little red flowers can only be exchanged for fruit candy.”
In the past, they would have been very happy to exchange for fruit candy, but now that they had food at home, fruit candy wasn’t as attractive to them.
Yi Bao thought for a moment and said to Er Bao, “Let’s wait a bit longer. We’ll exchange for something else to give to Mom.”
“Okay,” Er Bao naturally agreed.
The thought of exchanging something for Mom made him happy. “If we could exchange the little red flowers for meat and money, that would be great.”
Upon hearing Erbao words, Bella glanced at him.
She thought the twins’ idea was very nice. She also wanted to exchange for meat to eat and money to spend, but that was just a dream.
“When I go to elementary school, if I come first in the exams, I’ll get a prize,” she said.
She would be going to preschool in the second half of the year, which was also considered elementary school.
When she went there, if she came first in the exams, she would get a prize.
She was so happy.
“Really? There’s money? Is there meat?” Bao Er asked eagerly.
Bella replied, “There’s money, but I don’t know about meat.”
Yi Bao silently thought to himself, when he went to elementary school, he must come first in the exams!
