Chapter 10: A Low Profile for Longevity
Huang Yuelan returned home after buying fabric from the supply and marketing cooperative. First, she measured Wang Jianguo’s body.
The moment her hands touched him, she knew. Measuring him through his clothes, her hands inadvertently brushed against his body. She immediately felt the elasticity and strength of his muscles, especially his abdomen – six perfectly aligned packs.
It was clear evidence of his constant running in the mountains. This had not only built a strong physique but also granted him strength and explosive power beyond the average person. He was incredibly masculine, providing a tremendous sense of security.
Wang Jianguo couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. His wife not only had a handsome face, but also such a great physique. He had truly found a treasure.
After measuring his dimensions, Huang Yuelan began cutting the fabric while Wang Jianguo continued building their house in the yard.
Because their village was located in a mountainous area, there was an abundance of stones and lumber suitable for building houses. The materials were readily available and didn’t require much money; all they needed was strength and effort.
Wang Jianguo quarried stones of roughly the same size from the mountain, then mixed them with earth and mud. This created a house far sturdier than a typical rammed-earth structure. Rammed-earth houses easily collapsed or tilted after exposure to wind and rain, but a stone house could last for decades.
Although Huang Yuelan hadn’t learned sewing in her previous life, she was intelligent and quick-witted. Moreover, the clothing styles of this era were simple. She just needed to cut according to the pattern and sew it together.
Within two days, Huang Yuelan had completed Wang Jianguo’s new clothes.
During a midday break, Huang Yuelan said to Wang Jianguo, “After lunch, try on the new clothes I made for you. See if they fit. If anything needs adjusting, I’ll alter them.”
Wang Jianguo nodded eagerly, “Okay.”
Since the death of his parents, he hadn’t had any new clothes, let alone old ones. He usually wore animal hides left over from hunting – durable and warm.
Knowing his wife had made him new clothes filled Wang Jianguo with uncontainable excitement. He couldn’t wait to put them on and constantly feel his wife’s care.
After lunch, Wang Jianguo washed his hands and feet before putting on the new clothes Huang Yuelan had made. His heart felt as sweet as wild honey.
After he changed, Huang Yuelan was immediately impressed.
She had to admit, a handsome man looked good in anything, even a tattered rag.
Although her craftsmanship was not refined, the work was somewhat rough, and the style was very common, but Wang Jianguo looked like an international male model. His figure, appearance, and demeanor were all top-tier.
“Wow, not bad! It looks pretty good. But it’s because you’re handsome; you look good in anything,” Huang Yuelan praised Wang Jianguo.
Wang Jianguo smiled happily. He hadn’t expected his wife to care so much about appearance. He was lucky to be good-looking; otherwise, she might not have liked him so much.
“Your craftsmanship is excellent. You’re so skillful; the clothes are beautiful. I love them.” Regardless of the quality, in Wang Jianguo’s heart, the clothes Huang Yuelan made were the best, irreplaceable.
“Sister, you’re amazing!”
“Sister, can you make some for us too?”
Huang Yuelan patted her two younger brothers’ heads. “Don’t worry, the fabric is already cut. I’ll make some for you two next.”
“Wow! That’s great! Sister, you’re the best sister in the world!”
“Sister, you’re the best! It’s so lucky to have a sister like you!”
Since they could remember, the two brothers had never worn new clothes. They always wore hand-me-downs; they couldn’t even find cotton clothes, only clothes made from burlap sacks, which barely qualified as clothing and only served to cover their bodies.
A few days later, the main structure of the house was complete. The next step was to install the beams and roof tiles.
“Wife, the house is almost finished. I was thinking of going to the kiln factory in the neighboring production team to buy some roof tiles. Do you want to come with me?” Wang Jianguo wanted to take his wife out for a drive; staying at home every day was boring.
Huang Yuelan pondered for a moment and said, “No need to buy tiles. Let’s use reeds. Even the team leader’s house in our village is a thatched-roof house. If you, a hunter, move into a tiled house first, won’t others be envious?”
People fear fame, and pigs fear getting fat. Especially in these times, it’s best to keep a low profile.
