Release the Female Lead Ch. 150

Chapter 150: Old Family Secret1 is Online Again

Xiao Zhang was proficient in the art of disguise, and she even mastered the mysterious technique of Shape-shifting. Among the Secret Guards, there were many who knew the art of disguise, so Ye Wenxin’s concerns were understandable.

Of course, the prerequisite was that the other party had a disguise skill as formidable as Ling Jue’s to truly deceive Ye Wenxin.

“Not bad; at least you’re cautious now. You little brat, daring to openly challenge Her Highness today. I was nearly scared to death!” Xiao Zhang felt relieved but also remembered Ye Wenxin’s behavior during the day. She never conceived that Ye Wenxin would dare to oppose her mistress, Long Qingyue, so blatantly.

“When I treated you, I already knew something like this would happen. But, Xiao Zhang, you don’t have to worry too much. Her attention to me is also because she needs something from me.” Ye Wenxin felt it was reasonable. The allure of the name “Ye Liangchen” and his superb skills were enough to tempt Long Qingyue.

“Needs something from you, yes, Her Highness’s legs…” Xiao Zhang seemed to understand this point and laughed self-deprecatingly. “Stupid me, I was too anxious for you; how could I forget about this?”

“It’s good to care, but in moderation. Xiao Zhang, be honest, have you been thinking about me these days?” Looking at Xiao Zhang’s expression, Ye Wenxin could not help teasing.

Because it was Xiao Zhang, Ye Wenxin joked without qualms.

After all, this person in front of her was the one who had forcefully demanded her to speak so many embarrassing lines and content. But now, when Ye Wenxin said that, Xiao Zhang’s face reddened slightly, with an expression that seemed to say, ‘How did you know’.

She started to feel embarrassed on her own, leaving Ye Wenxin unsure of how to proceed. They maintained a somewhat ambiguous posture, reminding Ye Wenxin of Xiao Zhang’s inexperienced kiss.

That kiss was just a light peck on the corner of the mouth, but it represented Xiao Zhang’s promise. However, now that Xiao Zhang no longer had to die and Ye Wenxin had let go of her previous unhappiness, she felt that she should have a good talk about that matter to prevent the agreement situation from happening again.

“Time doesn’t wait; let me take you to see Her Highness,” Xiao Zhang said after a moment of silence, sighing as she got up and pulled Ye Wenxin to her feet.

She looked at Ye Wenxin with a hint of disappointment, which puzzled Ye Wenxin.

“Did I do something wrong?”

“It’s because you didn’t do anything just now.” Xiao Zhang felt a bit frustrated, but considering that Ye Wenxin was still a child, she could only placate her. “Forget it. Let’s focus on taking care of you first. You seem to have lost weight again. Have you been eating properly lately?”

“Wait, take care of me? Not planning to sell me, are you?” Ye Wenxin became more confused. How come they were flirting one moment, and the next Xiao Zhang became disappointed?

“How could I? I reckon I’m the only one who likes an unprofitable product like you. Look at you, thin as a bamboo pole with barely passable looks.” Xiao Zhang pretended to be disdainful, but deep down, she had already considered Ye Wenxin as hers.

If Ye Wenxin was willing in the future, with Xiao Zhang’s current position in the Secret Guards, she could easily bring Ye Wenxin back home and take care of her until she grew plump.

Though they could not bear children, Xiao Zhang would give her everything she had until the end of her life, fulfilling her promise.

Ye Wenxin, unaware of Xiao Zhang’s thoughts, looked terrified. “I didn’t expect you to be like this, Xiao Zhang, not even sparing a child! And where am I lacking?! I have the face of your favorite pretty boy.” Ye Wenxin intended to tease her by transforming into Ye Liangchen, but Xiao Zhang abruptly stopped her.

Xiao Zhang felt somewhat helpless as she grabbed Ye Wenxin’s hand to stop her from using Shape-shifting. But when she looked closely, she realized that the person beside her was almost the same height as herself.

However, she still had that same innocent look in her eyes, making Xiao Zhang even doubt if she had really chosen carefully or accidentally brought home a cheap product.

“I’m starting to regret it now.”

“Huh? Xiao Zhang, do you need me to check your brain? You’ve been acting strange since you came back.” Ye Wenxin reached out to touch Xiao Zhang’s forehead, intending to use her Qi to find out what was wrong with her, as she had been talking nonsense this entire time.

Watching Ye Wenxin approach, Xiao Zhang’s heart skipped a beat, and she gently pushed Ye Wenxin away.

“You little brat, behave yourself.” Xiao Zhang’s cheeks turned slightly red, feeling like she was already beyond redemption.

She had chosen a cheap product that was of the same gender as herself, and nearly twenty years younger. Yet, for some reason, Xiao Zhang found herself blushing and her heart racing because of this young girl.

But Ye Wenxin did not seem to understand her feelings at all, which frustrated Xiao Zhang. She almost wanted to press Ye Wenxin to the wall and rub her against it.

Of course, that was just a thought; Xiao Zhang could not afford to lose face like that. Now that she had calmed down, she even doubted whether Ye Wenxin had any feelings for her at all.

Looking into those innocent, pure eyes, it did not seem like Ye Wenxin understood anything about feelings.

“Xiao Zhang, are you really alright? Let me check your pulse.” Ye Wenxin still seemed somewhat worried as she quietly touched Xiao Zhang’s hand and used her Qi to take Xiao Zhang’s pulse.

Xiao Zhang struggled for a moment, but feeling Ye Wenxin’s genuine concern, she let Ye Wenxin do her thing, hoping that Ye Wenxin could grow up quickly and understand her feelings sooner.

However, even though Ye Wenxin was in her fifties, she still had no idea that Xiao Zhang was completely infatuated with her. She earnestly checked Xiao Zhang’s pulse and gave her conclusion.

“Besides a slightly fast heartbeat, restlessness, and a bit of insomnia, there’s nothing major,” answered Ye Wenxin seriously. Xiao Zhang chuckled upon hearing this, unsure if she found Ye Wenxin too cute or if she found Ye Wenxin’s tone amusing.

“Besides that, it seems like you’re craving a man,” added Ye Wenxin, bewildered, and then she felt Xiao Zhang’s grip on her wrist tighten, as if the notion of wanting a man had sparked a strong reaction.

Although not all women needed sexual fulfillment, there was indeed a hint of it in Xiao Zhang’s pulse, and Ye Wenxin realized she might have been too direct, embarrassing Xiao Zhang into anger.

“Sorry, I was too direct. Anyway, congratulations, Xiao Zhang; you’re in love and have started to yearn for romance.” Ye Wenxin clapped awkwardly. Xiao Zhang stared at her even more fiercely, completely unsure how to evaluate her choice in the end.

“Why did I end up with cheap goods like you.”

“I’m not that cheap! I can keep you warm,” protested Ye Wenxin strongly, but Xiao Zhang was already walking faster, wishing she could just leave Ye Wenxin behind.

Along the way, Ye Wenxin was completely bewildered, but remembering their purpose, she obediently followed Xiao Zhang until they finally reached where Long Qingyue was staying.

There were heavy troops stationed outside and numerous hidden Secret Guards. Even though Xiao Zhang was present, Ye Wenxin was still thoroughly inspected from head to toe and was even required to remove her bag of holding and storage ring.

Ye Wenxin was very dissatisfied with this. She stood her ground at the door, and eventually, it was Xiao Zhang who reported to the Eldest Princess. Only then did Ye Wenxin finally enter the room with her belongings.

“Your Highness, the person is here.”

“You go downstairs.”

Xiao Zhang hesitated slightly, signaled to Ye Wenxin with her eyes, and quickly left the room.

Long Qingyue was reading a book, and even after the door closed, she did not look at Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin did not mind, casually finding somewhere to sit down.

Regardless of whether Long Qingyue had noticed or not, Ye Wenxin did not bother to care about her superior attitude towards outsiders.

“Ye Wenxin, a nice name.” After observing Ye Wenxin’s conduct, Long Qingyue set aside her book with a faint smile on her face, but that smile still carried enough pressure to be somewhat intimidating.

“To live in this world, seeking nothing but a clear conscience, that’s the meaning behind my name,” explained Ye Wenxin with a smile. In truth, even Long Qingyue did not know that her real name was Ye Wenxin.

“So that’s it. And how about the name ‘Ye Liangchen’?” Long Qingyue asked the second question, making no secret of her curiosity about Ye Liangchen.

“My father said, ‘Liangchen’ means a fine time and beautiful scenery, he and my mother met on a night like that, thus the name,” replied Ye Wenxin confidently, but she could not help but wonder if Long Qingyue had recognized her or not.

If Long Qingyue had recognized her, Ye Wenxin felt she would lose face.

If she had not, Long Qingyue might just turn into a toxic friend and kill her right away.

Both were transmigrators and seasoned villains. Regardless, Ye Wenxin wanted to gauge Long Qingyue’s true importance and see how long her performance could keep her alternate identity as Ye Wenxin alive.

“Then where did your elder brother’s medical skills come from?” Long Qingyue continued to inquire, as if unable to find any clues on Ye Wenxin’s face, so she straightforwardly asked the question she most wanted to know.

“My brother said his medical skills are an old family secret.” As soon as the words fell, a smile crept onto Long Qingyue’s lips, but she quickly suppressed it. However, her beautiful face looked somewhat strange because she could not hold back her amusement.

“An old family secret” was a reference from the Earth anime “Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!”. The anime told the story of the protagonist, Mile, who transmigrated to another world and possessed overwhelming abilities compared to humans. However, Mile just wanted to live a peaceful life and often used “It’s an old family secret” as an excuse whenever she attracted attention but did not know how to explain herself. Over time, “It’s an old family secret” became a running gag in the series.

Ye Wenxin had watched a few episodes of the anime before transmigrating. As for Long Qingyue, she had been some company’s CEO before coming to this world and only learned about this reference from Ye Wenxin.

Translator’s notes:

  1. In two previous chapters, 109 and 138, when Wenxin first mentioned Alzheimer’s and then when she was demonstrating the multiple pill furnace trick to Ling Jue, I translated ‘old family secret’ as ‘hometown esoteric knowledge’. I didn’t know it was a line from an anime, and the Chinese term Author used was way oversimplified that it doesn’t translate even close to ‘old family secret’.

Thank goodness Author decided to give the reference in this chapter. I’ve fixed those mistakes now, sorry you guys had to read that shoddy translation, not that it was wrong, but it’s not accurate either. I’m so embarrassed. ↩︎
