Chapter 7: Did Captain Rong Come Back This Time to Get a Divorce?

Bada Town was very small—so small that even the tiniest news could spread like wildfire.

Near the dormitory building, a group of people had gathered, whispering and gossiping quietly. If you walked closer, you’d hear that they were talking about none other than Rong Jingchen’s recent return.

“I heard Captain Rong came back to visit his family? Honestly, being in the military must be tough—you barely get to go home even once a year,” one person remarked.

Rong Jingchen had returned two days ago, and the whole town had been buzzing about it. After all, he was someone special—so young and already holding the position of regiment Captain in the North China Military Region. It was quite impressive!

“Well, what else could it be? It’s obviously because of the Ye family. The first place he went after arriving was their house—I saw it with my own eyes. Probably came back to ask for a divorce,” a woman with permed hair leaned in mysteriously, glancing around as if she were revealing some great secret.

“Divorce? Captain Rong finally comes back, and it’s to get a divorce?”

Everyone was shocked.

“Wasn’t that marriage forced on him? They got their certificate last year, and then Captain Rong went straight back to the army,” the woman continued.

Everyone in Bada Town knew about the marriage between Rong Jingchen and Ye Muqi. There had been plenty of gossip at the time.

Even though it was clear Rong Jingchen didn’t like Ye Muqi, they still got legally married. And now, after more than a year of not returning, he comes back just to get a divorce? That was surprising.

“Honestly, you can’t blame Captain Rong. That Ye girl really is too much. Threatening suicide by jumping into the river just to make him come back? If it were my family, we wouldn’t want her either—let alone someone like Captain Rong.”

“Exactly! She may be pretty, but with a temperament like that, she’s not marriage material!”

Thinking back to how Ye Muqi had jumped into the river just a few days ago—and now Rong Jingchen had returned—it was hard not to connect the dots. Who would believe it was a coincidence?

Still, while they gossiped, none of them dared to say anything to Ye Muqi directly. What if they upset her again and she went back to the river? Then they’d all be responsible!

At that moment, Ye Muqi was at home, idle with nothing much to do. Her gaze wandered toward the kitchen.

“I’ll be heading to the military district in a few days. Maybe I should make some good meals for Mom and Dad before I leave,” she muttered to herself.

No sooner said than done. She turned and entered her personal space to check what ingredients she could bring out.

Inside, the selection was dazzling. Once she started browsing, she couldn’t stop—she wanted to cook everything. If it weren’t unrealistic, she would have served up a full imperial banquet!

“Hmm, maybe not this. I should make something Mom and Dad have never eaten before…” she said, putting back some of the more ordinary dishes.

After some thought, she decided to go with foods uncommon in this era—something to surprise Xia Ying and Ye Zhengfeng.

She picked a few appetizers and then moved to the meat section, her eyes landing on the fresh seafood.

“Seafood…”

Looking over it all, Ye Muqi sighed. Even if she wasn’t allergic, it would be too hard to explain where these things came from. In the end, she carefully chose some high-grade Kobe beef.

“Let’s grab some fruit too. I can make a fruit salad for them to try.” With a skip in her step, she looked at the ingredients around her like a master chef in paradise.

When she exited the space, she dove right into the kitchen and got to work.

By late afternoon, Ye Zhengfeng came home first. But unlike his usual calm demeanor, he seemed tense and upset, as if suppressing some kind of anger.

Ye Muqi came out of the kitchen cheerfully with a freshly made fruit salad in her hands.

“Dad, you’re home? Dinner’s almost ready. Once Mom’s back, we can eat…” she said with a smile. “What’s wrong? Are you in a bad mood?”

“Oh, nothing. Just tired from work,” Ye Zhengfeng replied, softening his expression when he saw his daughter. His brow was still slightly furrowed, but his tone was much gentler.

Then he saw the table—three dishes and a soup, well-balanced with meat and vegetables. And the colorful fruit salad. He couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride.

His daughter had really grown up.

But the rumors he’d heard at the factory today made him angry again. His Muqi was such a good girl—beautiful, talented in the kitchen—how was she “troublesome”?

Besides, Xiao Rong didn’t come back to divorce at all!

Not long after, Xia Ying also returned. With dinner now ready, the Ye family sat down to eat.

The Kobe beef’s aroma filled the room. Ye Muqi had prepared it with the simplest seasonings to preserve its original flavor.

When Ye Zhengfeng picked up a slice of the thickly cut beef, he was puzzled by the size but still took a bite.

“What kind of meat is this? I’ve never tasted anything this tender before,” he said in surprise, turning to Ye Muqi.

It was fragrant but not greasy, smooth and tender—absolutely delicious. After asking, he couldn’t help but eat the whole piece in one go.

“Is it really that good?” Xia Ying, curious about his reaction, tried a piece too. “…Wow, it is tender. Did we buy this kind of meat before?”

“Nope, I just picked it up randomly while I was out,” Ye Muqi replied with a smile, smoothly changing the subject.

Seeing her parents enjoying the food made her happy too.

Xia Ying glanced at her daughter with a contented look. With Ye Muqi going to the military district soon, she finally felt a bit more at ease—at least the girl wouldn’t starve.

After dinner, Xia Ying insisted that Ye Muqi not clean up and went into the kitchen herself with the empty bowls.

Meanwhile, Ye Zhengfeng was digging through a cabinet in the living room. A moment later, he pulled out a refined-looking metal tin and walked over to Ye Muqi.

“Muqi, take this tea and deliver it to the Rong family tomorrow,” he said, carefully handing the tin to her.

She accepted it with a puzzled look. “Why?”

“Didn’t Xiao Rong bring us some local specialties the other day? We have to return the favor.” Of course, the real reason was that Ye Zhengfeng wanted the nosy neighbors to see how close their family still was with the Rongs!

Divorce? What a joke. He was going to help his daughter slap those rumors in the face.

“Oh,” Ye Muqi nodded.

But… didn’t Rong Jingchen not even like tea?

“This is premium tea from the factory. Don’t spill it,” Ye Zhengfeng added, watching her examine the tin nervously.

From the look on his face, it was clear the tea was valuable to him.

“I got it,” she said, putting the tin away carefully.
