Chapter 20: The Commander Actually Brought a Woman

“Um… do you want me to massage it for you?”

Ye Muqi reached out, wanting to help him rub his shoulder. After all, it had gone numb because she had leaned on it the whole ride. But she was afraid Rong Jingchen would think she was being inappropriate, so she asked cautiously first.

“I’m fine,” Rong Jingchen shook his head. After kneading his shoulder for a moment, he dropped his hand.

He hadn’t expected her to sleep so soundly—it had been several hours, and he hadn’t dared move the whole time.

“It’s just a bit numb. It’ll be fine after some movement.” Maybe because he saw how Ye Muqi looked at him, lips pursed and a bit guilty, Rong Jingchen subconsciously added a little more explanation.

“Mmm…”

Ye Muqi nodded and looked out the window. The evening glow was fading, and night was beginning to fall.

They had been on the train all day. Judging by the time, there were probably still two more hours left until they arrived.

“Have something to eat,” Ye Muqi said, placing the food Aunt Xia had packed for her and some fruit from her space onto the small table, inviting Rong Jingchen to eat.

“I already ate.”

Rong Jingchen had eaten a bit while she was asleep. He had found the fruit especially sweet—sweeter and fresher than any he’d had before.

By 7:30 p.m., night had fully fallen, and the train finally arrived at the Jing City train station. Ye Muqi watched Rong Jingchen go to retrieve her massive suitcase and instinctively reached out.

“Should I take it myself?” she offered, reaching for the luggage.

Rong Jingchen looked at her in confusion, not understanding why she suddenly wanted to carry it herself. The suitcase was huge and heavy—he didn’t think someone as delicate as her could manage it. He didn’t let go, just stared at her in question.

“Your shoulder… earlier…”

She had already leaned on him the whole way, and now she was making him carry her luggage too. It made her feel overly pampered.

Rong Jingchen understood then—she was worried about his shoulder.

“I’m not so weak that I can’t even carry luggage.” Rong Jingchen smiled slightly, effortlessly lifting the huge suitcase. “Stay close, don’t get lost.”

“Okay.” Ye Muqi grabbed the leftover fruit and hurried after him as they got off the train.

The train had only just arrived, so there were still a lot of people pouring out of the station. The two of them walked in the crowd, surrounded by people all moving briskly.

There was still a bit of a journey from the train station to the military compound.

Rong Jingchen had told her earlier on the train that it would take over an hour to get there.

“Are we taking a taxi now?” Ye Muqi asked, curiously looking around. Big-city train stations really were much more grand.

But with so many people, it might be hard to get a taxi. And since the military compound was likely remote, the return trip wouldn’t be profitable—drivers might not even want to take them.

“Someone’s coming to pick us up,” Rong Jingchen replied.

“Oh.”

Ye Muqi relaxed after hearing that.

The train station in Jing City was nothing like the simple one in Bada Town—it was much larger. It had only taken a few minutes to enter the station back there, but exiting this one had already taken over ten minutes.

After looking around, Ye Muqi’s gaze fell on Rong Jingchen walking ahead. His back was always so straight, and his legs were so long—one of his steps equaled two of hers!

Rong Jingchen was walking briskly, and if he hadn’t been holding back for her, he probably would’ve gone even faster.

“Rong Jingchen,” Ye Muqi called out as she sped up to walk beside him.

“Hmm?”

“Nothing, I just wanted to say thank you.” She gave him a bright smile.

Under the bright lights of the train station, Ye Muqi’s already beautiful face looked even more dazzling.

“Thanks for taking care of me on the train,” she said.

Whether it was because of his promise to Aunt Xia or not, the fact that he let her lean on him for several hours and didn’t move even though his shoulder went numb—little things like that really touched her.

Even though Rong Jingchen always seemed serious, cold, and hard to approach—and a bit of a stereotypical straight man—he clearly had her in mind.

They would be living together from now on, and she wanted to soften the relationship between them if she could.

“No need to thank me. You’re my wife.”

As soon as they exited the train station, they saw a green military jeep parked outside—big and eye-catching. Even more so because there were two soldiers in 1981-style camouflage uniforms with buzz cuts standing by it, drawing lots of attention.

Ye Muqi didn’t even need to ask—this had to be the car sent to pick up Rong Jingchen.

The two soldiers didn’t look very old, but they carried the competent air of military men. Still, compared to Rong Jingchen, they were less intimidating—less cold, and their gazes weren’t as sharp.

“Commander! Over here!” the one in the passenger seat, Yin Daquan, jumped out of the car the moment he saw Rong Jingchen, shouting excitedly.

The driver, Lin Zihua, also jumped out and waved both hands wildly, as if afraid Rong Jingchen wouldn’t see them in the dark.

Ye Muqi: “……”

Alright, she took back what she said earlier. Apparently that earlier cold demeanor was just an act.

Aren’t these two just a pair of walking spotlights?

Rong Jingchen gave them a glance and then walked toward the jeep with Ye Muqi.

Lin Zihua and Yin Daquan rushed up, clearly wanting to give Rong Jingchen a bear hug.

Just as they opened their arms, they noticed the young woman who had been walking beside Rong Jingchen the whole time—and froze awkwardly in place.

Huh?

Where did this girl come from?

They had seen her from a distance earlier but thought she was just a stranger walking alongside him by coincidence.

But now she had followed him all the way to the car. If they still didn’t realize she was with their commander, they’d have to be blind!

And that giant pink suitcase Rong Jingchen was carrying? There was no way that belonged to someone like him.

“Commander Rong…”

Rong Jingchen ignored them. He first loaded the big suitcase into the trunk, then walked back over to open the car door for Ye Muqi. “Get in.”

“???” Lin Zihua and Yin Daquan stood there dumbfounded, as if they’d seen a ghost.

Shocking!

Utterly shocking!

Their commander actually brought a woman with him? He carried her luggage? He opened the car door for her?

When did their cold, stern commander become so gentle?

The two of them looked at each other, eyes wide in disbelief.

“What are you two standing there for?” Rong Jingchen said once Ye Muqi had gotten into the car, noticing the two of them still frozen.

“Oh, oh!” They snapped back to their senses and quickly jumped into the car.
