Chapter 6
Their village had a small poultry farm that supplied eggs to the nearby county.
There were about twenty hens, and usually, the village women took turns feeding them—each person was responsible for a day. Of course, they also needed someone to collect the eggs every day, one person every three days, and the work earned the same labor points as everyone else.
Labor points were used by each production brigade to record how much work each person did. At the end of the year, food was distributed based on these points. Those who earned more points could even get some money.
When educated youths were sent to the countryside, they worked under the same system. Their food was earned through their own labor.
In this era, there was no such thing as eating for free.
But… there were people who slacked off.
In her previous life, Ye Qianqian liked Shen Congyun, so she went out of her way to help him get some rest and avoid hard labor. Conveniently, she was often assigned to the chicken farm, so when Shen Congyun got a minor injury, she arranged for him to take over the egg collection job. He’d already been doing it for nearly half a month.
Now, autumn harvest season was fast approaching.
Everyone was working themselves to death in the mountains, while this grown man was just collecting eggs. Not only did he sometimes get to eat the eggs, but he also received the same labor points as others.
He was living the good life.
Now, it was time to let him know—without their family’s favoritism, there was no way he could be lazy and maintain a good reputation around here.
Grandpa Ye glanced at his granddaughter and asked, “Qianqian, have you really let him go?”
“I’ve let go. I’m not interested in him anymore. I used to think pretty boys were great, but he clearly looks down on me—why keep throwing myself at someone who doesn’t want me? From now on, we’ll follow the village rules,” Ye Qianqian said, then helped her mother clean up the table and began tidying up the house.
She needed to lose weight—exercise more, eat fewer carbs.
It was just baby fat from puberty. As long as she ate less and moved more, she could slim down. In her past life, she lost weight quickly after getting married because of all the work she had to do.
Especially after leaving her parents’ home and moving to the city—within six months, she was down to about 100 pounds.
That was when she looked her best.
Thinking about that cheered her up.
The Ye family members were a little stunned watching her, but since she didn’t seem sad at all, they decided not to say anything more.
Once everything was tidied up, Ye Qianqian returned to her small room. In her past life, her mother had taken good care of her—at the very least, the room was spotless, and there were a few pots of flowers on the windowsill.
She leaned in and sniffed—so fragrant.
But tonight, she planned to kiss that man, so she had to make sure her breath was fresh and pleasant—something that would make him remember her forever.
She picked a few mint leaves from one of the pots, crushed them in a teacup, added a bit of water, and even a pinch of sugar. That way, her breath would be sweet and refreshing.
Just as she finished preparing the mouth rinse, she heard someone calling her outside. The voice was crisp and pleasant, but it instantly chilled her heart.
It was Ye Qingqing—her cousin, who in her previous life seduced the man she loved and was full of scheming ideas.
Ye Qianqian had been deeply in love with Shen Congyun, but this woman had tried to marry him just to escape to the city. When she left with him in the end, Ye Qingqing’s face twisted with jealousy.
Today, she was here to drive a wedge between Ye Qianqian and Shen Congyun.
“Qianqian, are you home?” A plain-looking, somewhat dark-skinned, and skinny woman suddenly appeared by Ye Qianqian’s window and grinned. “Scared you, didn’t I?”
That fake sweet, innocent act—truly sickening.
