Chapter 22: Give Them a Scare
Xing Han quietly watched him, curious about what tricks he might pull.
Suddenly, a massive black mist burst out from Ling Yiran’s body, rushing towards Xing Han. Within the mist, a large mouth full of sharp teeth opened, aiming to bite Xing Han.
Startled, Xing Han quickly released Ling Yiran and stepped back a few paces. In that moment of shock, he saw the giant creature retreat back into Ling Yiran’s body. The latter’s body transformed into a huge humanoid black mist, with only two eyes like blue flames, while the rest of it was an eerie black aura. Yet, it exuded a majestic presence that even gods and buddhas might fear.
Then, his vision grew increasingly blurry, and suddenly, he opened his eyes. He found himself slumped over a chair in his office, with the bright sunlight streaming through the window. Cen Chuan and the others were sitting on the sofa opposite, quietly discussing something.
Xing Han rubbed his temples and took a sip of water to clear his mind.
For three consecutive days, he had dreamt of Ling Yiran during his noon nap, and the dreams felt incredibly real. Unlike past dreams where conversations felt muffled, as if through a glass wall, these recent dreams were as clear as face-to-face chats. Even after waking, he could vividly recall what the other person said or did.
Fan Genghua, hearing a sound from the other end of the desk, looked up and noticed Xing Han’s pale face. Concerned, he asked, “Commander, did you have a nightmare?”
“Yeah.” A dream is just a dream. Xing Han quickly brushed off the fright from the dream. As Ling Yiran had said, even after waking, he still wouldn’t believe in ghosts. However, there was one thing that intrigued him. He asked Fan Genghua and the others, “Have any of you ever dreamt of the same person for three consecutive days?”
Fan Genghua and the others perked up with interest. “Commander, you dreamt of the same person for three days straight?”
Peng Da chuckled, “They say what you think about during the day, you dream about at night. The person who can appear in your dreams for three days must be someone you deeply care about.”
Pan Min laughed, “Peng Da, are you implying that the commander is thinking about his partner?”
“Exactly.”
“Then just say it directly. No need to beat around the bush. The commander is straightforward and might not catch your drift.”
Everyone burst into laughter.
Xing Han squinted slightly. Since returning to the military district, he had been swamped with various tasks, leaving no time to think about Ling Yiran. Even if he did think, it was only about how to handle matters between them. After all, his relationship with Ling Yiran was still in its early stages. However, after the second dream, he did find himself thinking about Ling Yiran during his free moments.
Cen Chuan, suppressing his laughter, cleared his throat and said, “Commander, I’ve never dreamt of the same person for three consecutive days.”
The others also expressed that they hadn’t. They didn’t dream often, and even when they did, they couldn’t control the content. It wasn’t easy to dream of the same person for several days in a row.
Cen Chuan added, “But I’ve heard other soldiers say they’ve dreamt of their girlfriends for several days because they missed them too much.”
Xing Han raised an eyebrow. Did he really miss Ling Yiran that much?
Seeing Xing Han deep in thought, the others held back their laughter, not wanting to disturb him.
Meanwhile, on Ling Yiran’s side, he laughed heartily without any reservations.
Thinking about how Xing Han was scared by him, Ling Yiran felt he could laugh for days. Despite claiming not to believe in ghosts, Xing Han was still frightened when he saw his true form.
However, his adoptive father had warned him not to casually reveal his true form, so he should refrain from using it recklessly in the future.
“Little Ancestor, what are you laughing about? Did something happen between you and Major Xing?” Ling Zhen and the apprentices came in, carrying boxes of cigarettes and alcohol, placing them on the ground. The apprentices then left.
Ling Yiran looked at the twenty boxes of cigarettes and alcohol, surprised. “Did the money I gave you buy all these?”
“Of course not. The money you gave could at most buy five packs of good cigarettes and five bottles of good alcohol.” Ling Zhen patted the boxes and said, “These are special supply cigarettes and alcohol made by our Ling family. You can’t buy them on the market. You can take them back to the Underworld as gifts.”
“Special supply alcohol? I heard it’s quite expensive.”
“Things you can’t buy on the market are naturally expensive.”
“If I take these back as gifts, won’t the Ling family suffer a loss?”
Ling Zhen chuckled, “Our Ling family has plenty of everything, especially money. Besides, the Old Ancestor left you a large inheritance. Feel free to use it. By the way, how did things go with Major Xing today? Did he start believing in ghosts?”
Ling Yiran countered, “Do you believe in dreams?”
“Of course.” The Ling family took every dream very seriously.
Ling Yiran rolled his eyes. “I forgot you’re not ordinary. Never mind, do me another favor. Help me buy a few pairs of yellow underwear.”
Ling Zhen immediately understood his intention and grinned, “Dreams didn’t work, so you’re trying another method?”
“This way is faster, but I still need to remind him in dreams to be cautious.”
“Alright, I’ll prepare it. By the way,” Ling Zhen paused at the door, “the old folks from the National Special Department are hosting a banquet this weekend. Everyone going with us will be there, and even those not going will attend. Oh, and the Xing family is invited too. Major Xing might be there. Little Ancestor, why don’t you join us?”
Ling Yiran was speechless. “What do you need a dead person for at a living person’s event?”
“To give them a scare.”
Ling Yiran: “…”
