Chapter 18

Hadn’t she already burned the whole box of letters exchanged between the original Jiang Yun and Li Yuan after regaining her memories?

How did Jiang Zhu get her hands on a love letter from Li Yuan?

Her face instantly turned several shades paler. She instinctively glanced toward her mother. Kang Qing indeed doted on this daughter. After Jiang Yun changed her mind and said she didn’t want to marry Li Yuan, although Kang Qing felt it was a pity to lose such a good match, she still went along with Jiang Yun’s decision. She even turned the narrative into Jiang Zhu being unwilling to marry Li Yuan and thus slandering her younger sister for coveting her future brother-in-law.

“Father, you watched Yun Yun grow up—you know her temperament better than anyone, don’t you?”

“Yun Yun is such a sweet, obedient girl. How could she do something so shameless? Maybe someone jealous of her deliberately imitated her handwriting to frame her with these two letters.”

Though Kang Qing was illiterate, she understood her daughter’s intentions well. Only the three of them—she, Jiang Yun, and Li Yuan—knew the truth. As long as they didn’t admit to anything, who could prove it? Everyone else was just jealous of her Yun Yun.

As for Li Yuan, with just a crook of her daughter’s finger, Kang Qing was certain that boy would gladly help cover for them.

“Zhu Zhu, I admit I’ve favored Yun Yun a little more, but I still raised you well.”

“If you hadn’t been so disappointing—refusing to finish even elementary school—how could I not prefer Yun Yun instead?”

“You can’t be jealous just because she’s better educated and prettier than you, and then make up such things to slander her.”

Jiang Zhu was fuming at Kang Qing’s words and could no longer hold back. All she wanted was to vent the grievances buried in her heart.

“Yes, you raised me—but only just barely. If it weren’t for my father, you would’ve gotten rid of me long ago just because I wasn’t a boy. You’d have dumped me in some deserted mountain.”

Jiang Zhu was voicing something she had held in for years. Kang Qing had thought she didn’t remember, but Jiang Zhu had simply pretended to forget—so as not to make things harder for her parents.

If her father hadn’t noticed something was wrong that night, she might’ve died in the wilderness.

“As for being jealous of Jiang Yun? Not possible. Sure, you love her—but I’m not lacking either. I have Dad, and he cares for me.”

There were plenty of people in the world more beautiful and capable than Jiang Yun. Even in their own brigade, Jiang Yun wasn’t anywhere near the top.

What was there to be jealous of? If anything, she hated her.

“You! How dare you! You’ve really grown bold, haven’t you? Not only are you slandering your sister, now you’re accusing your own mother?”

“When have I ever had such thoughts? Jiang Zhu, saying such things—how do you think that makes your mother feel?”

She couldn’t possibly remember, right?

Back then, Jiang Zhu had barely learned to talk. How could she recall that incident? It had to be Jiang Zhu misreading her over the years due to her cold attitude.

No one knew what happened back then. Only Kang Qing did—even her husband had thought Jiang Zhu had just wandered off on her own.

“Hmph. Mother, think whatever you want. Didn’t you all just accuse me of slandering Jiang Yun—of saying she was involved with her future brother-in-law?”

“Fine then. Jiang Yun, if you want to prove your innocence, it’s simple—go get your old homework notebooks. Compare the handwriting. That’ll settle it.”

“I remember you only graduated from middle school a year ago. No matter how your handwriting has changed, it couldn’t have changed that much.”

Hearing this, Jiang Yun became convinced that Jiang Zhu simply couldn’t stand the bond between her and her mother. She rushed over and started physically attacking Jiang Zhu in a rage.

Those letters were indeed written by the original Jiang Yun—there was no way to deny it. If she brought out her old homework, the truth would be obvious.

If she were asked to write something on the spot, the handwriting wouldn’t match either the letters or the old notebooks. How could she explain that?

The original Jiang Yun had stayed home after quitting school, never touching a pen. How could she suddenly start writing beautifully and neatly?

Her writing style had always been distinctive—sloppy and crooked. Anyone could recognize it.

Maybe others had held back from calling her out to save face—but not her older sister. Jiang Zhu would stop at nothing to nail her to the shameful label of “lusting after her sister’s fiancé.”

Only by creating an even bigger scandal could Jiang Yun divert attention away from her disgraceful actions. Even if people still gossiped afterward, without hard evidence, it would all just be rumors.

Like a madwoman, Jiang Yun attacked Jiang Zhu viciously—pinching her thighs and arms, yanking her hair.

Jiang Zhu, in pain and pushed past her limit, fought back. The two sisters paid no mind to the adults present. Their brawl grew fiercer, and they nearly overturned the bench where Second Uncle and Second Aunt were sitting.

Seeing them grow more frenzied while the elders’ attempts to break them up failed, Jiang Yao moved closer to Li Guihua, keeping a watchful eye in case the chaos spilled over and hurt her grandmother.

But the accident still happened.

Jiang Yao had been on guard against the sisters’ flailing limbs. When their eyes turned red with rage and they started swinging blindly in her grandmother’s direction, she stepped closer to stop them.

In the confusion, a ceramic bowl that Jiang Zhu had meant to throw at Jiang Yun missed and hit the empty side of the bench where Li Guihua was sitting.

Shards from the shattered bowl flew out and sliced Li Guihua’s hand, just a fist’s distance away—blood immediately began to flow.

The two sisters didn’t even realize Li Guihua had been injured. They only noticed a bowl smashing near their grandmother.

After fighting for so long and dodging the fake attempts by Kang Qing to break them up, they continued to ignore their elders’ shouts. Now, charging past Jiang Yao, they ended up behind Jiang Jianguo, who shared the bench with Li Guihua.

In one careless move, both sisters kicked the legs of the bench simultaneously.

The bench collapsed. Jiang Jianguo lost his balance and fell to the ground. Thankfully, Jiang Yao was quick enough to catch Li Guihua and help her avoid falling.

“Old man, are you alright? Heaven help me—what kind of sins did our family commit to raise such children? Even your own grandparents aren’t safe! If something happens to you, I swear they’ll pay!”

To Li Guihua, her lifelong companion meant more than anything—even Jiang Yao came after Jiang Jianguo in her heart.

She had only just steadied herself, but seeing her husband fall to the ground, struggling to get up without her eldest son’s help, her tears began to fall uncontrollably.

Jiang Yao, face dark with fury, stepped forward and pulled the two apart. Then she slapped both Jiang Zhu and Jiang Yun across the face and shoved them hard to the ground.

“Have you had enough?”

The two sisters sat on the floor in a daze, frozen in the positions they had landed in.

They couldn’t believe it.

Jiang Yao… had actually hit them?
