If he hadn’t been driven into a desperate corner, even with ten times the courage, Tao Ronghua would never have dared to hold Sang Feiyu at knifepoint in public.
So when he stated his demand, Sang Feiyu didn’t hesitate and complied immediately.
There was no need to risk her life for that bit of money.
However… when Tao Ronghua saw the one yuan bill in her hand, his brows twisted so tightly they could have knotted themselves.
“You trying to fob me off like I’m a beggar?”
He wouldn’t even bother to pick up a measly yuan from the ground—how insulting!
Sang Feiyu responded blandly, “This is all I have on me. Even if you kill me, I can’t find another cent for you.”
In her heart, Tao Ronghua was only worth that much. Not a penny more.
Tao Ronghua gripped the dagger tighter, the veins on the back of his hand bulging—he was clearly furious.
“What can this kind of money even do?”
“Sang Feiyu, or do you think your life is only worth one yuan?”
Sang Feiyu thought to herself: Actually, it’s your life that’s only worth one yuan. But it wasn’t the time to provoke him further.
So she said softly, “Let go of me, and I’ll tell you where I hid the inheritance I took.”
A flash of greed flickered in Tao Ronghua’s eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. “Don’t try to play me.”
“Even your punctuation, I wouldn’t believe.”
Sang Feiyu: …
She felt a bit lucky that she had chosen to trick Tao Ronggui instead of this cunning and calculating Tao Ronghua.
Otherwise, who knows which ditch her corpse might be dumped in by now.
She sighed lightly and said, “It’s fine if you don’t believe me.”
“Back when Tao Ronggui let me go, I did think about telling him where I hid the inheritance.”
“But… I didn’t trust him.”
“I don’t care who ends up with that stuff. What I care about is whether the person I entrust it to can actually hold on to it.”
“That was my parents’ life’s work. If I handed it to your brother, I wouldn’t feel at ease.”
“But if it’s you…”
She trusted him even less!
What she said aloud, however, was: “I think you have what it takes to keep that inheritance safe—maybe even double it in the near future.”
Tao Ronghua sneered, “If someone else said that, I might believe it.”
“But you? You’re so sly—no matter how much you say, I won’t believe a word!”
Sang Feiyu’s face stayed calm. “That’s fine. You don’t have to believe me. I’m not forcing you.”
Then her eyes suddenly gleamed. She raised an eyebrow and sneered, “Besides, I wasn’t talking to make you believe me.”
The next second—bang!—Tao Ronghua’s head was smashed, blood spilling everywhere.
The dagger in his hand was also snatched away by someone else.
Sang Feiyu rolled her eyes disdainfully. “All that talk? Just to stall for time.”
She knew her grandparents would definitely come to save her!
Sang Youde stormed in and kicked Tao Ronghua hard in the back of the knee—thud!—forcing him to kneel.
Zhao Hui wasn’t about to be outdone. She kicked him square in the chest, then spun around, her leg sweeping across from his left cheek to his right. Tao Ronghua felt like his molars were about to fly out!
“Xiao Yu, we’ll leave the rest to you. Blow off some steam,” Grandma said.
Hearing that, Sang Feiyu raised her right arm and struck fast and hard.
Smack smack smack… Her fists landed on Tao Ronghua’s face like hammers, swelling it into a pig’s head in seconds.
Still not satisfied, she kicked and punched him again and again, only stopping once she was too tired to continue.
Tao Ronghua lay on the ground, powerless.
He still didn’t understand how things had turned out this way.
Wasn’t he the one who had held Sang Feiyu at knifepoint?
Why was he the one lying here, beat to a pulp?
He hadn’t even seen who her backup was before he was already dazed from the blows.
“Grandpa, Grandma, you’re amazing!”
“No wonder you fought in the war against the Japanese!”
Only now did Tao Ronghua realize what had happened. No wonder he couldn’t fight back—Sang Feiyu’s grandparents had arrived.
They were retired veterans who had been on the battlefield, fought against the Japanese, and earned medals. How could he possibly stand a chance?
Zhao Hui looked at Sang Feiyu with heartache. “Xiao Yu, Grandma’s sorry we were late.”
“You weren’t. You arrived just in time.”
“Come on, let’s take him to the Revolutionary Committee.”
Sending him to the police would be too lenient!
Tao Ronghua deserved to be tortured and punished by those deranged Red Armband fanatics, to experience all the suffering she and her parents had endured in both this life and the last!
When Tao Ronghua heard they were taking him to the Revolutionary Committee, his legs immediately turned to jelly. He scrambled up, dropped to his knees, and pleaded, “Grandpa, Grandma, please give me another chance! Let me go this time, please!”
“I know I was wrong!”
“I’ll never covet my fourth uncle’s inheritance again!”
After saying that, he slapped himself hard—twice. Blood dripped from the corners of his mouth.
Zhao Hui sneered and looked down at him, curling her lip. “Xiao Yu, remember this well. Never believe a scumbag like him.”
“He’ll kneel and beg, he’ll beat himself for pity, he’ll admit fault—but he’ll never change!”
Sang Feiyu nodded. If murder wasn’t illegal, she would never let this trash stay alive.
Sang Youde grabbed the collar at the back of Tao Ronghua’s shirt and lifted him like a fish on a cutting board—completely at others’ mercy.
From the crowd’s perspective, he was done for.
From a distance, Old Madam Tao saw a crowd gathering. Forgetting her original errand of finding her eldest grandson, she dragged her husband toward the commotion.
“Hey, what’s going on here?”
“Why’s everyone crowding around?” she asked nosily.
“That young man and his family imprisoned his cousin. Now he’s wanted across the city—and in broad daylight, he even had the nerve to hold her at knifepoint in his own neighborhood…”
The speaker didn’t even finish before a piercing shriek cut through the air—“Aaooh!”
A figure charged forward.
“Ronghua!”
Old Madam Tao stared at the swollen pig-faced figure in front of her, suddenly uncertain. “You’re… my eldest grandson, Ronghua, right?”
Seeing his grandma was like spotting a life raft in a storm. “Grandma, you’ve got to save me!”
“They’re going to hand me over to the Revolutionary Committee!”
“You know what that place is like—it’s not for humans!”
“I can’t go there!”
Tears and snot ran down Tao Ronghua’s face. He was truly terrified.
Old Madam Tao finally recognized the two people standing opposite them as her in-laws. Now that she needed something from them, she had no choice but to lower herself.
“Oh, in-laws, when did you get here?”
“Why didn’t you tell me in advance? I could’ve picked you up from the train station!”
Zhao Hui’s brows furrowed. She wants to sweep this under the rug?
No way!
“I don’t care who shows up—he’s going to the Revolutionary Committee tomorrow no matter what!”
Old Madam Tao forced a stiff smile. “Now, now, in-laws, let’s not be rash. We can talk this through calmly.”
“And besides, think about it—Feiyu and Ronghua are cousins. Blood is thicker than water. If something happens to Ronghua, wouldn’t that reflect badly on Feiyu too?”
