“The Commander Took His White Moonlight with Him — In This Rebirth, I Refuse to Marry Him” Chapter 23

Chapter 23: Persuading Grandpa to Get a Check-Up

The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. He stepped forward, ready to argue—but then stopped.

Forget it. He was a company commander, after all. If, in front of so many people, Bai Yalan said he wasn’t worth it, and he rushed up to declare that he was, it wouldn’t matter whether others believed him or not—just the act itself would look desperate. He couldn’t lower himself like that. He couldn’t afford to lose face.

With that thought, he sat back down, still fuming. His expression was grim, and he didn’t say another word.

Meanwhile, Fu Yunzheng had a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

After a while, Qin Kaishen finished dealing with the injuries. He waited until the infirmary had mostly quieted down, but Bai Yalan was still busy writing up medical reports and showed no sign of paying him any attention. Since there were still others around, Qin Kaishen could only sulk in silence and leave in frustration.

No one noticed his unusual behavior. Bai Yalan didn’t pay him any mind either, and only realized he was gone after finishing up.

On the other hand, Battalion Commander Fu was still there. Seeing that she was done, he took the initiative to bring her a cup of water. “Doctor Bai, thank you for your hard work.”

The man’s voice was steady, his expression composed and unreadable.

Bai Yalan smiled. Perhaps it was because of the familiar relationship between her grandfather and this man that she felt a bit closer to him, despite being young people.

She took the cup without hesitation and said with a smile, “Thank you.”

She was extremely thirsty and drank it all in one go. In her heart, she thought—this guy was actually pretty considerate.

Thinking of her memories from her previous life, she looked at him with a slightly complicated expression.

After some thought, she didn’t say anything strange. Instead, she politely and kindly said, “Battalion Commander Fu, if you have any missions outside the base… please be careful.”

Hearing this seemingly out-of-nowhere comment, Fu Yunzheng couldn’t help but chuckle. The old saying was right—doctors really do have parental hearts.

He didn’t overthink it and simply smiled, replying, “Alright, thank you for your concern.”

On the other side, Qin Kaishen’s face was still dark even after he left.

He couldn’t figure out what Bai Yalan was thinking. She’d followed him to the military base to become a military doctor, yet she was still acting upset with him. How long was she planning to keep this up?

He was walking and thinking at the same time.

Just as he arrived back at the training grounds, someone called to him from afar.

“Hey, Company Commander Qin, come over here!”

Looking up, he saw Gu Fujun surrounded by a bunch of soldiers, talking excitedly—though Qin Kaishen couldn’t hear what he was saying.

When he saw Qin Kaishen approaching, Gu waved him over enthusiastically.

Qin walked over and heard him cheerfully telling the others, “…Yeah, we’ve pretty much got everything ready. The marriage registration is already submitted, the housing application approved. I just need to head back home, get married, and bring my wife here to join the army family. Haha! Brothers, if you’re free, you have to come to the wedding feast!”

Everyone congratulated him:

“Nice, I’ll definitely be there.”

“Ah, I’ve already used up all my leave—can’t make it. Old Gu, congrats in advance!”

“Seriously, congrats! You really move fast, suddenly saying you’re getting married just like that.”

“Well, that’s Old Gu for you. Getting married is like fighting a battle—seize the moment before it slips away. When he sees the chance, he strikes! Haha, thanks for the congratulations, brothers.” He then turned to Qin Kaishen. “Company Commander Qin, same goes for you. If you’re free, you have to come. Even if you’re not, just say the word—we’ll both come pick you up personally!”

Qin Kaishen forced a smile and nodded stiffly. “Got it. Congratulations.”

Someone teased, “Old Gu, look at you showing off. Even using battle metaphors for getting married. But don’t get cocky—getting married fast isn’t the real skill. Let’s see how fast your wife gets pregnant—that’s the real talent. So, you got good aim or not, eh, guys?”

Everyone burst out laughing. Amid the raucous laughter, Gu Fujun’s face turned red, and he jokingly scolded, “Get lost! You shameless bastard!” Then he stuck out his neck and declared, “Don’t worry about Old Gu’s aim—never missed a shot!”

That made the others laugh even harder.

As they continued cracking increasingly dirty jokes, Qin Kaishen turned away, face dark as thunder, and left fuming.

Lu Qing’er ending up with a crude man like that—what a waste.

If she ever found out that her husband had become a topic for such vulgar gossip among his peers, how upset would she be? With her personality, Qin couldn’t even imagine what kind of life she’d have in that marriage.

Thinking about Lu Qing’er, then comparing her with Bai Yalan, Qin Kaishen’s buried anger surged again. It all came back to Bai Yalan.

If it hadn’t been for her pushing Lu Qing’er into the water, she wouldn’t have had to marry Gu Fujun.

And to this day, Bai Yalan hadn’t offered the slightest apology. Worse still, she was now giving him the cold shoulder on purpose.

The more he thought about it, the more furious he became.

Fine then, Bai Yalan. Let’s see how long you can keep this act up.

Back with Bai Yalan, her parents, Bai Mu and Bai Ba, had initially been delighted when they learned their daughter passed the military medical department exam. They were incredibly proud of her.

And since Grandpa personally guided her during her internship, they weren’t too worried.

But watching their daughter wake up early, return late, and still squeeze in running and strength training to improve her physical fitness—they couldn’t help but feel distressed.

“Dad, isn’t she training too hard lately?” Her mom plucked up the courage to speak to her stern father-in-law. “Can’t the training be lightened a little?”

The old man, who deeply loved Bai Yalan, replied, “To achieve anything, one must first be determined. Young people shouldn’t be afraid of hardship. What’s worrying is if she refuses to endure it. The child isn’t complaining, but you, the parents, are already heartbroken. No wonder you’ve never amounted to much. If you want her to succeed, don’t interfere.”

The couple had no response to that. All they could do was continue pampering their daughter with good meals and thoughtful care.

Bai Yalan, on the other hand, felt that although life was tiring, it was fulfilling and full of challenges. These were experiences she had never enjoyed in her previous life.

She reassured her parents, “Mom, Dad, don’t worry about me. Grandpa’s with me during the internship. The training’s tough at first, but once I meet all the requirements, it’ll get easier. And look at me now—I’m stronger than ever, aren’t I?”

Her words warmed her parents’ hearts, and they felt proud. What parent doesn’t want a child who’s caring, sensible, and successful?

Even though they knew she was trying to comfort them, everything she said was true. They had clearly seen how much their daughter had grown and improved recently. Watching her blossom into such a strong, capable young woman filled them with joy.

By now, she’d been at the base for quite some time.

Thinking back to her previous life, when her parents died in a car accident, Bai Yalan realized that this lifetime had already passed that tragic date. She quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

Her rebirth was meant to change that fate.

It had been three or four days since the date her parents were supposed to have died in her past life. Yet here they were—safe, healthy, and by her side, sharing in her happiness and worries. Their fate had clearly changed.

This trip to the capital had not only helped her grow, it had also allowed her to steer her family away from disaster.

This was worth celebrating. But amid her joy, she couldn’t help but start worrying about her grandfather.

She had altered her parents’ fates—but not his. What should she do?

Alone in her room, Bai Yalan carefully recalled everything from her past life related to her grandfather.

She remembered he had died of cancer. It was discovered late, and he didn’t want them to worry. So he never told anyone until he was already near death.

Because of that, even in this new life, Bai Yalan carried a deep sense of guilt and regret. She was determined to do everything she could to make it up to him.

This time around, her life had deviated entirely from the old path. She had come to his side early and chosen to become a military doctor.

Perhaps at this point, her grandfather hadn’t yet realized there was anything wrong with his body.

With that thought, she made up her mind—no matter what, she had to persuade her grandfather to get a check-up.

She was his granddaughter; it was only right to care about his health.

If he refused, she’d act cute, act spoiled—whatever it took. The sooner the better.

That very night, while running laps with her grandfather again, she brought it up.

The old man didn’t take it seriously. Hearing her suggestion, he even patted his chest and said, “You silly girl. What are you thinking? Why should I get a check-up when I’m perfectly fine? Just look at me—fit as a fiddle!”
